A beautifully renovated 17th century cow barn lying in the grounds of the owners Grade 2* listed thatched manor house. 2 miles north of Ilminster, 1 mile south of Isle Abbots, in the small hamlet of Ashford. Centrally located in Somerset, 45 minutes from South and west coastal beaches. Cyclists and walkers paradise. A private entrance leads onto a graveled patio area and front door. The entrance hall gives access to: the thoughtfully appointed lounge /diner with wood-burning stove with patio doors leading to outside seating and BBQ area; fully equipped kitchen; ground floor double bedroom with en-suite shower/ toilet room. Oak stairs lead to vaulted landing with bathroom and second twin bedroom (please note reduced head height into upstairs bedroom) third double bedded den is ideal for children. Oil fired central heating. Septic tank. The outside secluded patio dining area overlooks the rambling paddock with its 2 resident miniature Shetland ponies and views over the adjacent farmland. Luxury Hugo Buuren toiletries provided for use. Bed linen, towels and heating inclusive. Ideally Friday changeover. 2 night minimal stay (£50 cleaning surcharge for short stays). 1 well behaved pet welcome. No smoking in property please.

My family ( 3 children , 3 cats and several goldfish)moved from Buckinghamshire to this beautiful area of Somerset in 2013. We have settled into our grade 2*

We are keen cyclists and walkers and have found some fantastic routes ,straight from our door with some fabulous "watering holes" and cafés along the way.

We are situated 45 minutes from both north west somerset beaches and the Southern Jurassic Coast , with a wide variety of walks, cycles ,drives and just relaxing coastal cafés and beautiful villages. A real,step back in time .

We have just enjoyed a lovely two night stay at the cottage and wish we could of stayed longer! Jayne was a very accommodating host - we'll definitely be back!!

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here last weekend.

Both Jayne and Dave were extremely welcoming and their recommendations of things to see and do were spot on.

The barn itself was delightful, everything we wanted.

I would highly recommend this barn to anyone and this time of year it really is the perfect cosy getaway in a tranquil environment.

Gorgeous, cosy country retreat

We wanted a country hideaway to escape the city for the weekend and Jayne's cow barn ticked every box. We enjoyed a lovely relaxing two nights. Jayne has really thought of everything. The cottage is gorgeous and cosy and we just loved everything about it - the style, the layout, the well-equipped kitchen, the DVD collection and much more. We only wish we could have stayed longer! If you are hesitating about which cottage to book, I would enthusiastically recommend that you choose Jayne's place.

Cosy and comfortable cottage

We had a relaxing stay in this comfortable, cosy cottage. It was clean and well maintained throughout, with a useful welcome pack on arrival. The cottage has a nice selection of books, games and DVDs. The beautiful gardens and animals were perfect for our children. Nearby, there were fields with ponies and cows. Jayne, the owner, was extremely helpful and went out of her way to make our stay pleasant.

Delightful cottage

Cosy, comfortable, clean attractively decorated. Great wood-burning stove. Fun sleeping accommodation upstairs in beamed attic rooms.

Convenient for Devon and Dorset coast and for visiting NT houses.

Cyclists paradise. National cycling Route 33, Route 2 of the South Somerset Cycle Route (100 mile) and many local routes available from the doorstep. Short or long, flat or hilly somerset has spectacular views and amazing hidden gem cyclist friendly cafés , many within a 10 mile radius suitable for walkers as well!

Secure bike storage and drying facilities available if required.


Farthings Cottage is ideally centrally located in somerset. A 45 minute car journey will take you to the spectacular southern Jurassic Coast line or to the family friendly Weston Super Mare miles of golden sands. The north western dramatic coastline where Dunster , Porlock and Minehead can be explored is about an hours drive but why not take the Steam train from just north of Taunton.


Bristol airport is 45 minutes by car. Taunton train station 20 minutes drive away. Ilminster bus service with services from London is 3 miles from the cottage.
