About the Owner

Having lived in the region for many years and viewing life in the high mountains as more of a challenge our father purchased the house in Ceret to have a house in the winter and to be nearer the amenities when he need it. Happily he remains on his mountain and 3 of his 4 sons have moved to the area to enjoy the life and help in his dotage. In order to keep him and his dog, Daisy in wine and biscuits we rent out the house when we can. We the sons spend our days, Tim working remotely for a Cambridge based medical IT company, Steve renovating a ruined farm near Montferrer and Mat working in the film industry. We all love it here in Ceret, the Vallespir, the Conflent and the wider region, from the Mountains to the Mediterranean there is no place we would rather be and we hope you feel the same

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Beautiful place, welcoming town, excellent location."

Maison beau Soleil is a home from home, equipped with everything you could wish for, from BBQ to bicycles! The owners really have thought of everything. The veranda with vines is a delightful place to sit in the shade, or eat al fresco. You could spend your whole time in the town without ever leaving. The market is a must, as is the art museum, and the pretty streets are picture postcard worthy. There are an abundance of bars and restaurants to choose from, and the artisan chocolatiere is exquisite for morning pain au chocolates. if you can tear yourselves away, it is a truly fantastic base to explore the best France and Spain have to offer. Beaches, mountains and sights of interest are all within easy distance.

Lovely property ideally placed for center of Ceret

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay. A very comfortable property only five minutes walk from the center of Ceret, so perfect for popping in for an early evening aperitif, the famous Museum of Modern Art, or to the market on Saturday mornings. Five bicycles too, if you fancy going a little further afield to some of the vineyards or the swimming lake at St Jean Plat du Corts. The large municipal poll is also only five minutes walk away if you fancy cooling off closer to home. I'm sure I'll be staying here again.

Sunny, relaxing holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday staying at Maison Beau Soleil. We love Ceret and have visited the surrounding mountain and coastal areas several times. This time we particularly wanted a house with a garden for our young children, which was also close to the centre of Ceret - very few and far between so we were lucky to find this house.

What we particularly liked was that we felt relaxed and at home as soon as we walked through the door. A lovely chilled bottle of rose awaited us in the fridge, which we drank sitting in the garden below the grapevine pergola. The house is spotless and felt very homely, with great thought having gone into providing everything that you might need for your holiday stay. The kitchen is very well equipped, which is important to us as we love cooking. The bedrooms are airy and sunny, with some lovely views of the mountains from one. Our daughter was particularly taken by having her own private balcony complete with grapevine.

The street is quiet and just a 5-minute walk from the main street and shops. There is a lovely boulangerie for bread and a fishmongers close by. A swimming pool, playground and supermarket are also a short walk away. We stayed around for the Saturday market, which is huge and absolutely fantastic with a lively buzzy feel.

We had days out at the beaches and the marine reserve at Cerbere (great snorkeling) as well as taking a short drive into Spain for lunch at Cadaques and a visit to Salvador Dali's house at Portlligat.

We would definitely recommend this house and hope to return there ourselves one day.

Great holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We hadn't been to Ceret before. It's a great town, really pretty with loads happening when we were there in August. The house is minutes walk from the centre of all the action, but removed enough to be very tranquil. It's easy to park, even though you're so close to the shops. The mountains create a lovely backdrop. There's very big, cheap municipal pool a couple of minutes walk away, where the children can splash all morning, or afternoon supervised by the crew there. Also 10 minutes drive away is a pretty lake surrounded by mountains where there are heaps of activities for all the family. Our weather wasn't great, but we still had a wonderful time as the house is so comfortable, spacious, well built and the hosts have thought of everything to make your stay relaxing.

Ceret

Céret is the pretty and charming centre of the Vallespir region. It is famous for its Musée d'Art Moderne which has numerous Picasso paintings, sculptures and ceramics, including the famous bull fighting bowl series. The museum also features paintings by Chagall, Matisse, Herbin, Soutine, lots of Fauves and a few Impressionists.

The Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge) is a single arch stone bridge built between 1321 and 1341. With a single span of 45.45 m,

Every Saturday morning there is a fabulous local market and the highlight of the week in Ceret.

Everywhere you go there are cafes , restaurants and bars but step off the main street and you'll be back into peace and quiet , wandering along the old medievil streets admiring the architecture and enjoying the cool of the shade.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

For most of its life, the Pyrenees-Orientales region (formerly called Roussillon) of Languedoc was Spanish, only reverting to France in 1659. Since then it has retained a distinctively Catalan flavour, with Catalan spoken widely. The food too has a Spanish flavour, with spicy chorizzo and paella popular.

The landscape of the Pyrenees-Orientales is perhaps the most dramatic in Languedoc, dominated by the Pyrenees and the towering Canigou, the foothills of which hold some of Languedoc Roussillon's most interesting sightseeing.

As the plain nears the coast, huge etangs appear (inland lakes), home to fishermen and wind surfers alike. The coast is mostly flat, but suddenly (thanks to the Pyrenees) starts to undulate at Collioure, creating picturesque bays and headlands (more like Provence). Collioure is particularly pretty with chic restaurants and cafes looking out over the battlements and pastel-coloured houses.

The mountains of Languedoc's Pyrenees-Orientales give way to huge river valleys of the Tet and Tech rivers, where fruit farms abound, growing apricots, apples, almonds and much of France's early vegetables.
