Brittany Groundhouse is a Spectacular Grand Designs Eco House

Overview

Property

Updated: 17-Aug-2016
Famous Grand Designs Eco House near Rostrenen, Cotes D'Armor, Brittany, France

Brittany Ground house is a spectacular eco house located in the heart of rural Brittany. Made using rammed earth, old tyres, recycled bottles and salvaged timber, the house was featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs and ended up as one of Kevin McClouds top 5 designs from 10 years of Grand Designs. The house is set in its own acre of organic garden, surrounded by mature oak and chestnut trees. Each room has a glazed front and faces onto the outside south facing terrace. The house is fully furnished with a tasteful mix of vintage French furniture and bespoke one off pieces made from natural and reclaimed materials. The luxury bathroom features a huge stone bath with a magnificent over-head shower and is a magical place to enjoy a sensual bath after a long day on the go. A large solar panel that runs along the roof provides the house with all of its hot water and the house uses Swedish dry toilet technology to ensure that it lives up to it’s high eco credentials. There is no conventional heating at the Ground house as its south facing position, glazed front and passive underfloor heating keep the house lovely and warm, but there are 2 wood-burning stoves in the house should you want to take the nip off of any cooler nights. Each of the 3 bedrooms at the Brittany Ground house have glazed tri-folding full height windows that overlook the wonderful organic garden and the same applies to the kitchen/lounge and round room. In the summer the house becomes at one with the garden and provides a truly stunning secluded retreat, balancing perfectly with its serene surroundings. Outside, there is a lovely patio area with outside dining table and BBQ. There are various secluded spots around the house that are perfect for lazy afternoons reading a good book or enjoying a glass of wine. The gravel area right outside the Ground house is perfect for a typically French game of Boules, whilst the children will be ecstatic once they discover the various swings, climbing trees and dens located throughout the gardens. Located in a beautiful, peaceful environment surrounded by woodland, streams, mossy boulders and ancient ruins, Brittany Groundhouse provides a wonderful, relaxing holiday destination perfect for nature lovers, walkers, families, children and is an ideal romantic getaway for couples. Situated in the heart of rural Brittany, The Brittany Groundhouse is perfectly positioned for exploring the entire Breton region. The roads in Brittany are a real pleasure to drive and The Brittany Groundhouse is perfectly located to access all the best areas of Brittany leaving you seriously spoilt for choice. Just 20 minutes away from the house you also have the famous Lac de Guerlédan, a 22 km lake which has activities for every member of the family. Its rustic landscape and forests are a haven for walkers, ramblers, mountain bikers and horse riders, whilst its all year round water sports centre includes kayaks, rowing boats, water skiing and pleasure cruises. In the summer, the lake offers superb swimming with several small sandy beaches which are perfect for children and offer a great location for a summer picnic. If you’re looking for something more cultured however, the local area offers a fantastic choice of medieval towns, megaliths, châteaus and museums whilst food lovers will be mesmerized by the diversity of Breton cuisine, famous for its legendary seafood, crepes and galettes, lamb and cheeses. Locally, the area is famed for its organic and bio-dynamic produce much of which can be found at the local Tuesday market in nearby Rostrenen. Locally you could always indulge in a spot of fishing on the nearby Nantes Brest Canal, take a leisurely ride along the canal tow path, enjoy some scenic horse riding or visit the amazing Quénécan forest or Abbaye de Bon Repos. Whatever your preference, Brittany Groundhouse offers the perfect base to explore the fabulous towns, countryside and coasts of Brittany.

About the Owner

We live in the UK on the south coast and run an exciting interiors business and small delicatessen.

We have 2 young children, Louie 7 & Ella 5, who both love the house, so if you are a family with children, you couldn't find a better place to stay.

We try to visit the house as much as we can as it truly is a great place to kick back and relax.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the Brittany Groundhouse in 2013 from the guys who designed and built the house and were filmed doing so by Channel 4’s Grand Designs. They had decided to sell as they needed to return to the UK to begin a new project and were very pleased to find a like-minded family to develop the house where they had left off. We both fell in love with the house straight away and realised that it would not only be a great place to escape to and enjoy time with the family, but also a lovely property to share with like-minded people. Both of us are great believers in living a sustainable lifestyle wherever possible and this wonderful house ticked so many boxes for us it was impossible to turn it down.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Beautiful, unspoilt beaches are in abundance in Brittany and the house is perfectly located to give you the chance to explore some very diverse coastlines most of which are between a 40 minute and 1 hour drive away.

So whether you are looking for long, white sandy beaches, small coves full of rock pools and places to explore or dramatic, rugged coastlines steeped with towering cliffs, the choices available are quite staggering.

Travel:

The house is located in the very middle of rural Brittany in the Côtes-d'Armor district close to the market town of Rostrenen. It is about a 1 and a half hour drive from the ferry terminal at St Malo or about 5 hours from Dieppe. The nearest airport is about a 50 minute drive away. Use of a car is essential.

Distances:

The nearest village is just a few minutes drive away from the house where there is a fantastic organic bakery and food store as well as a small bar/restaurant. The larger town of Rostrenen is a five minute drive away and has several large supermarkets as well as banks, post office, restaurants and a wonderful organic market each Tuesday. Locally you can also fish on the Nantes Brest Canal, take a leisurely ride along the canal towpath or enjoy some scenic horse riding.

Facilities

From the Owner

Having spent a large part of the summer at the house, as well as some time over the winter, we have been captivated by the cleverness of the design, the space and airiness of the inside and the way the house is at one with its surroundings and environment. We’ve furnished the house with quirky, unusual and colourful pieces that have an organic feel to them and that you would want to live with every day. We have a passion for one off pieces and love anything vintage - we always prefer to find something old and tired and bring it back to life. We hope that the house comes across as homely, comfortable and inspiring and love to hear any feedback from guests on how we might make improvements.
