Charming House In Villautou With Private Pool And Garden near Mirepoix

Updated: 26-Sep-2016
A Relaxing And Peaceful Location With Panoramic Views Near the charming medieval town of Mirepoix in Cathar country in the Aude

This charming 2 bedroom house with its private swimming pool is just a 10 minute drive from the beautiful medieval bastide town of Mirepoix, 45 minutes from the city of Carcassonne - a world heritage site and an hour from the historic city of Toulouse. The house is an end of terrace cottage set in the small hilltop village of Villautou. Over a 100 years old it is both south and west facing set in a magnificent panorama of velvety green hills with the Pyrenees peeping over the top. The house and garden are on different levels adding to the charm of the property. The living room opens onto the upper terrace with a built in BBQ and stunning views of the rolling hills. The terrace also has panoramic views to the west allowing you to wine and dine whilst you watch the sunset. Steps take you down to the lower terrace, the swimming pool and garden with fruit and fig trees and vines hanging from the upper terrace. Here there is a more cosy and intimate atmosphere. Peaceful and relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing and enjoying the many activities organised in the region, a drive to the Mediterranean coast, a visit to Carcassonne, a trip to Mirepoix with its festivals and summer activities, its shops and restaurants and its famous Monday morning market or simply a walk to the top part of the village with spectacular views of the range of the Pyrenees.

About the Owner

We are an anglo-french couple who lived for many years in the Paris region. We fell in love with the beautiful countryside of the Lauragais and the Pyrenees after exploring the region where my husband's ancestors came from. We have now retired and are living in a nearby village so we will be on hand to greet you and assist you if needed.

A wonderful oasis in the middle of Cathar country

  • 5 of 5

We (a family of three) stayed in the property for a week in the second half of July 2016. We were indeed very pleased to stay in the house. It is situated in the quiet countryside, on the top of a hill, offering magnificent panoramic views over the area. It is just a few miles away from Mirepoix - a very well preserved and charming medieval town, which is situated halfway between Carcassonne and Foix. On the large central square of Mirepoix, you can admire the half-timbered houses supported on wood pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. On Monday morning the market in Mirepoix has a good selection of fresh and local produce amongst many other things.

We enjoyed very much the fascinating view from the main terrace, the swimming pool and the great hospitality of our hosts.

The whole area is rich in traditions, which date back to the early medieval ages, and the fascinating history of the enigmatic Cathars.

The house in Villatou is situated ideally and in the midst of the area, which is very close to the main Cathar Castles and routes. It is within an hour of driving distance to the main Cathar attractions - the castles of Coustaussa, Puilaurens, Montségur, Queribus, Termes, Aguilar and Saissac.

We loved our time in the house and would highly recommend it to everybody who is interested in this area of Southern France, which is not only rich in traditions, but also great cuisine and many attractions.

Lovely house with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little end of terrace house with stunning views and a good size pool in a very quite village. The house was perfect for us (a family of three) and we loved the peace and tranquility of the area. About 15 minute drive to nearest shops and restaurants but this was fine for us as we mostly stayed at the house and had barbecue's looking at the stunning views accross to the Pyrennees. The house was equipped with everything we needed and the owners were extremely welcoming and helpful which made the stay all the more pleasant. There are so many things of interest to see in the surrounding area and the lovely medeival market town of Mirepoix is very close with a large supermarket, good restaurants and a great market on Mondays where we bought lots of lovely cheese and meats etc. Would thoroughly recommend for a quiet, peacful, relaxing holiday.

Beautiful Peaceful Views

  • 4 of 5

This house is in a beautiful place. The views are stunning both day and night, but especially at night sat on the veranda enjoying a BBQ.

It's well equipt and the pool is lovely.

The owners, Penny & John-Noel are on hand and approachable if you need them.

Thank you so much Penny, John-Noel & Penny's mum too. We had the most relaxing time and something we all needed.

End of terrace cottage!

  • 3 of 5

Delightfully decorated and very well equipped holiday property, with lovely owners.

However neither the photos nor the description tell you that this is an end of terrace cottage with neighbours just over the hedge - and that's not fair. We didn't want to hear conversation (and patio building works) all week whilst we tried to unwind and relax.

We expected a detached property as with every other holiday villa we have ever rented!

Would we have rented had we known? - Probably not.

Would we rent again now we do know? - Definitely not!

Owner's Response: We very much regret that Pam and Tim did not enjoy and profit from this usually peaceful and relaxing location as have done all our other guests. We completely understand their disappointment but it is a great shame that we were not made aware of how disturbing the neighbours work was for them as we feel sure that we could have intervened and found a solution to the problem. These were quite exceptional circumstances

From the Owner

The Villautou house has been our holiday home for several years. We had it renovated by an architect and would now like to share it with others. We feel it is a little paradise hidden in the hills that are both magical and relaxing. Walks going uphill from the village lead to spectaclar views of the Pyrenees. Numerous fields of sunflowers can be admired in the surrounding countryside in the summer and the wildlife is fascinating. At the same time just 10 minutes away is Mirepoix with its shops and restaurants and varied festivals thoughout the summer. We feel we have the best of both worlds.

From the Owner

The house being at the end of a row of 4 houses and on the edge of the village has a privileged position with panoramic views from south to west. The terraces and the garden with its pool are very private and you are not overlooked by anyone. Much of the charm of the property is thanks to its hillside position. The house and the terraces are on different levels and the hillside slopes down steeply from the garden. This also means that we don't feel the property is adapted to young children.
