Walking & Cycling Paradise. Rural House with Magnificent Ocean & Mountain Views

Updated: 16-Oct-2016
Peaceful location with easy access to Teide National Park, coast, local attractions, bars & restaurants

This north-facing hillside property sits at about 750 meters above sea level and has stunning views across the Orotava Valley, overlooking the picturesque old town of La Orotava, to Puerto de la Cruz, and out over the Atlantic Ocean. To the south the house takes in the forests of the Teide National Park with the peak of the volcano (Spain's highest mountain and often snow-covered) in the background. Close to a number of local guachinches (rustic restaurants) offering superbly mouthwatering traditional food and home-produced wine at ridiculously low prices! The house has a large lounge area with balconies opening out onto a garden with uninterrupted panoramic views. Bus stops at the end of the lane will take you down to the shops, bars and restaurants of Orotava and Puerto, or up into the Teide National Park. The area boasts plenty of idylic woodland walks and is also popular with cyclists and ramblers. Local highlights include Loro Park Zoo in Puerto, Pueblo Chico (a theme park featuring fantastic scale models of buildings and landmarks from around the Canary Islands, including Mount Teide). A short journey to the west is the stunning prehistoric landscapes of the Masca Gorge and Los Gigantes cliffs. 30Km the East is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island and entire archipelago, and beyond that the jagged peaks of the Anaga Mountains. It is also easy to get to the south of the island where you will find the world-famous Siam Park water park, Jungle World and the Güimar pyramids, to name but a few. Ferries to the nearby islands leave from Santa Cruz (Gran Canaria) and Los Cristianos (La Gomera, El Hiero & La Palma). The island boasts literally hundreds of fiestas: you will find one happening somewhere every week! The highlight in the festive calendar is "Carnaval": both Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz have huge carnivals starting around the end of February. The streets come alive with parades, fancy dress, crazy competitions and all-night street parties - not to be missed!

Although we have neighbours behind us, the house is built into the hillside and the garden and balconies are all private and secluded.

SORRY: No pets. The property is really not suitable for very young children but babes in arms are welcome (cot and highchair provided), as are children over the age of 12.

Casa Colina

Thank you Chris for such a great stay in your house, perched up on the hillside with magnificent views of the Mount Teide and down to the coast. The rural setting suited us perfectly, especially as it was literally minutes in the car to a really good supermarket and only a short drive to La oratava and Puerto de la Cruz. The best of both worlds!

You made our stay very comfortable and we really appreciated the space your house offers inside and out. Travelling with older teenagers it was lovely to have plenty of individual space but also large spaces to gather together in the comfortable rooms. The kitchen was really well equipped and we enjoyed making our own fresh orange juice with your electric gizmo! We were very grateful for many thoughtful touches such as the welcome pack of groceries and wine in the fridge on our arrival - thank you!

We also really appreciated your advice on places to eat and visit - we thoroughly enjoyed exploring such a beautiful island. The information pack you put together was excellent and thorough but it was also very nice to chat when you were around.

All in all we have had a wonderful time and would definitely like to come back!!

Casa Colina - the perfect property

  • 5 of 5

Not having been to the Canary Islands before, we weren't quite sure what to expect, and were very pleased with what we found. The location is excellent - it was lovely being a little way up the mountain-side (cooler evenings, breath-taking views), and we had no problem finding our way to beaches and other attractions. Casa Colina is a very spacious apartment (at least one room we didn't even use), and it is very well equipped. The kitchen was perfect, with plenty of room for the whole family to be in there while meals were being prepared. Chris was the perfect host, giving us some really helpful advise over destinations, shops, traffic, and parking - particularly useful given the rural location.

This is the perfect property for anyone who wants the freedom to things their own way, away from the tourist centres, but close enough to major centres and attractions to be convenient. A real secluded get away property which will ensure you can recharge the batteries!

Wonderful stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay . The house is spacious, clean and has everything that we needed. The views were great and when Mount Teide peeked out of the clouds it was stunning.

Chris had excellent suggestions for days out and they were all first class. When we walked down the gorge to the beach it was great and no other tourists. This side of the island is much quieter and more local.

I recommend a stay here.

A top pick for a independent stay on Tenerife

  • 5 of 5

This is a great, spacious house with a million dollar view over Orotava Valley, the Atlantic and El Teide Volcano. Well equipped and nicely decorated. Set aside from the noise of the Tenerife's cities it's still close to the great attractions the island offers. The owner will help you at any time and offer great hints about what to do and where to eat. Recommended!

Between the Mountains and the Sea

  • 5 of 5

Casa Colina was the perfect base for our family holiday exploring northern Tenerife!

The house was extremely spacious, including a large kitchen, a large dining area and a beautiful sun room. All the rooms and the outside area have absolutely stunning views over the sea and the entire Orotava valley. Every morning we had our breakfast outside in the sunshine overlooking the activity down in the valley! The interior was luxurious and clean just as described on the website.

The host Chris was extremely kind and helpful, yet not intrusive, from the very start. He had left some groceries for our breakfast the first morning and he came especially to collect us from town when we had gotten lost on our way out from the airport... :) His large collection of tourist brochures, descriptions of walking and driving routes and personal excursion tips was very helpful in planning our day trips exploring the area.

The house is situated nicely away from the busy tourist hotels on the coast in Poerto de la Cruz, outside the town of La Orotava, among local houses along the mountain road leading up into the Teide National Park. A rental car is necessary. 15 minutes drive down takes you to the town, seaside and banana plantations, whereas within 15 minutes drive up the road you find yourself among pine forests and spectacular rock formations on the way to the volcano. Moreover, the motorway is also only 10 min drive away, which takes you quickly to further destinations around the island. The only thing we had to get used to was the rather steep and bumpy drive up the lane to the house, Definitely use first gear and don't stop halfway up, and it does get easier every time you do it!

We would recommend this house to anyone who wants to experience authentic Canarian village lifestyle and food, away from tourist resorts and who likes to explore the many different landscapes, cliffs, black beaches, mountain ridges, and amazing vegetation types Tenerife has to offer.

Owner's Response: Dia daoibh to all of you! I hope I got that right! Thanks for your lovely review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your time in Tenerife and that the house was what you were expecting. We had some great 'doorstep' chats, and I'm always happy to hear that my tips and suggestions were useful. You'll be pleased to hear that I am still enjoying listening to the traditional Irish fiddle music you recommended on the internet. Great stuff! Do keep in touch and perhaps we may even see you again one day. Sláinte Chris Chris

From the Owner

What can I say? The stunning views over the sea, the forests & the volcano - the local food and wine - the happy friendly locals and (not too close) neighbours. Generally just a stunning place to be!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Tenerife South (UK arrivals) at 90 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Santa Cruz de Tenerife (for Gran Canaria) at 35 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : TF5 (North) linking to TF1 (South) at 5 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Bogedon Matias (fantastic food!!) at 2 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Puerto de la Cruz at 10 Kilometres Car: necessary

Puerto has a number of beach areas. These are easily accessible by car, taxi or bus. Driving time around 15 minutes.

Although there is an airport in the north of the island most visitors will arrive at Tenerife South. This is about an hours drive, and there is also an excellent bus service direct from the terminus to Puerto. Car hire is very reasonable in Tenerife and is recommended for exploring the diverse attractions and stunning scenery the island has to offer.

La Orotava is within walking distance but a bus or taxi is recommended for the return journey as the route is rather steep! Puerto is a 15 minute drive and visits to the stunning Loro Park Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are a must.
