About the Owner

We moved to this beautiful part of Devon in 2007 as part of our "New Life in the Country" plan. We found Great Philham House with its unconverted barn and could not turn down the opportunity and challenge of creating our own holiday cottage.

Lorraine and I ensured that the barn was finished to a high standard, with character and luxury. We are so delighted with the result, that we stay in the cottage ourselves for an occasional holiday, even though its only next door!

Having worked hard to provide the highest standard of accommodation, we would now like to welcome everyone else to come and enjoy this fantastic part of Devon and are wonderful holiday cottage.

Lovely and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

A lovely and spacious barn in a beautiful location. Lovely and clean on arrival and Mark and Lorraine were even kind enough to leave milk, eggs and bacon for us. The pool table went down well with the kids and so did the parlour across the road which has a couple of swings and a trampoline for them. The barn had everything we needed and the owners made us feel very welcome. The location was perfect for us, as I have family and friends who live in Hartland. You have plenty of areas to explore such as hartland Quay, Clovelly etc. For the kids you have the big sheep and the milky way all of which are a 20 mins drive front the barn. I would highly recommend this barn for a nice relaxing stay and would happily stay here again to see my family.

Thank you Mark and Lorraine

Ideal location for exploring the coastline

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation was in a lovely secluded position, which lends itself to a restful place after a day exploring.

The secure courtyard garden was ideal for sitting out with our dog.

Found a stunning circular walk to Hartland Quay from the property.

Atlantic Village with an Asda, and various outlet stores, just a 15 minute drive away was a real bonus.

Immaculate, well equipped & spacious Barn conversion in a tranquil location

  • 5 of 5

Wow! Philam Parlour is immaculately clean and spacious. From the lounge to the kitchen and on to the bedrooms & bathrooms. Mark & Lorraine have produced a wonderful barn in a very peaceful location. You need to be cautious on the narrow lanes, but its worth it. The kitchen is well equipped and even has a second fridge that was very useful. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The welcome pack including bacon, sausage and BOUGHTfree range eggs, were great especially the milk, bread & butter after our long journey from Yorkshire. I loved the log fire and had to light it up once, although it was warm, just to remember what a real fire looked & smelt like...but was also reminded what a mess they make. We enjoyed feeding the Philam chickens our vegetable scraps and I was tempted to rustle a few REAL free range eggs! hint! hint! The guest information is both informative and useful. The direction were accurate and guided us safely there.

We visited Bude,( ate some lovely Cornish pasties from Tasty Pantry and had some good chips from the chippy next door, my sister had to try them again a few days later) Illfracombe, Exmoor/ Minehead and the lovely Bideford. The only down side is many of the places we visited except Bude, were quite a journey. One word of caution, I went to the New Inn at Kirkhampton and was served fermented green beans with my meal, everything else was just average. I am a renal transplant patient and have to be extra careful. I left these and told the assistant manager who refused to taste them himself. when we left I spoke to a young member of staff who was outside who said the chef & 2 other people tasted them and agreed they were off. I got no explanation or even acknowledgement. I hope its possible for us to stay at Philham Palour again in the future, or even try Philham b&b...maybe that's the right way to try those eggs. Good luck Mark & Lorraine in the future.

Owner's Response: Lovely review George, really appreciated and your description of the Parlour will really help others to decide to stay with us, so thank you for taking the time to give us an excellent review. About those eggs! We have provided fresh eggs to all our guests all year, as we normally have 12 chicken. Unfortunately a fox reduced that to 6 just before you arrived which reduced production somewhat. Its a real shame because they are the best eggs you will get, so I look forward to your next visit and I will make sure you get pick of the crop. Sorry you had an appalling meal at the New Inn, I have given them your feedback. We look forward to seeing you again, all the very best, Mark and Lorraine.

Very comfortable cottage in lovely surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Our experience in staying at the Parlour near Hartland was a delight from start to finish. The property is professionally run and very well-appointed with everything you could need for comfort. Our son and my visiting parents loved the farm setting too (which was in no way obtrusive). It made a perfect base for visiting the beautiful local area - you just need a bit of nerve for handling the narrow local roads :))

Many thanks again Mark and Lorraine for a lovely stay!

Lovely Property

  • 5 of 5

The parlor is a lovely clean and spacious holiday cottage, with everything that you need to be able to enjoy a self catering holiday.

The bedrooms are large and the en-suite bathrooms are to a high standard as is the rest of the property.

The detached garden across the way, is lovely for the children to be able to let off steam, while you enjoy a glass of wine.

Would highly recommend

A very well furnished and maintained holiday home

  • 5 of 5

Mark and Lorraine have created a beautifully crafted holiday home and furnished / maintain it to a very high standard.

It is spacious and very comfortable, with quality furnishings throughout. Pretty much anything you could need has been provided and we were very impressed by the overall quality of the property.

We spent a week in The Parlour, during which time the weather was less than kind to us, so it was a real comfort to come back to such a lovely holiday home at the end of each day.

For anyone looking to find a great getaway 'far from the madding crowd', this is the perfect retreat. Wifi is provided, which is great and enabled us to keep in touch with family and friends while staying here.

Despite the weather (the one thing the owners cannot cater for) we got out and about every day and found plenty of places to visit. We particularly liked the RHS Garden Rosemoor, National Trust Arlington Court, Bude and more close to the property Docton Mill (lovely cream teas) and Hartland Quay.

We wish Mark and Lorraine every success with their holiday home and are happy to recommend this property.

Location

From the Owner

We are situated in the heart of the Hartland Peninsular and surrounded by Devon countryside. Its very difficult to accurately describe the area, as there are so many redeeming features, there is simply everything on offer here. Peaceful and tranquil surroundings, fantastic views, rugged coast line, hidden coves, sandy beaches to name but a few. You simply cant help but fall in love with the area, everyone is so friendly and welcoming, the local pubs are full of atmosphere and local ale! You can walk for miles, either in land or along the fabulous west country coastal path. The hamlet of Philham, whilst off the main routes, has easy access to the town of Hartland and the main A39, with links to Cornwall.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

We are two miles from the west country coastal path and Hartland Quay with its rocky cove. Its a 15 minute drive to Sandymouth, which is a large sandy beach or 25 minutes to Bude, which is a seaside town with sandy beaches. Other great beaches can be found at Saunton Sands and Widemouth bay.

Nearby you have childrens attractions of The Big Sheep, The Milky Way and Go Ape.

For the sightseers we are minutes from the historic fishing village of Clovelly and within driving distance of both moors.

We are close to the coastal path for those keen on walking.

Hartland Town is under two miles away. Places of interest to visit nearby include the RHS Rosemoor, the historic fishing Village of Clovelly and the towns of Bude, Bideford and Appledore. Further afield you have Padstow, the Eden Project and both Exmoor and Dartmoor.
