19th century traditional house completely refurbished 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
COTTAGES ON HILL
Being placed in the vicinity of Zagreb, Cottages on Hill are situated in the Nature Park Medvednica, which divides Croatia's capital from Hrvatsko zagorje region. The area is famous for castles and manors and is called the Fairy Tale at Hand.
The main house is a unique wooden structure completely renovated in order to secure comfort on one hand but on the other it contains many artistic and heritage details that will inspire our guests to explore culture and traditions typical for the region. Yours hosts are a married couple – the husband Tomislav is an artist while the wife Goranka is an experienced museum professional and art historian so they can both help you get in touch with local culture.
The wooden house is in Hizakovec, a well-known historical hamlet, and it offers an entire home for stay surrounded by huge garden in which traditional fruit trees offer seasonal delights to the guests. In front of the house, there is a lovely vegetable garden. The hosts take care of ecology so none of the plants on the household are chemically treated. If you are looking for an oasis of peace and rural atmosphere, yet close to many cultural attractions easily accessible by car Cottages on Hill is a right place to pick up.
Accommodation is offered in recently refurbished traditional cottages that provide excellent comfort to the present day tourists but also remind us on how our ancestors used to live. A lot of original architectural details have been kept in exterior and interior design in order to create a well-balanced atmosphere..
The large house has three bedrooms and each is individually designed, starting from the color, furniture to some original items that are on display. All walls are hand-painted with a traditional roller technique based on floral pattern design. Original pieces of furniture are combined with comfortable beds equipped with antibacterial mattresses, while new wooden floors and windows have been reconstructed according to the original models.
Cottages on Hill may offer two additional room in separate wooden structures called „komorka“. Such vernacular structures used to be popular in the 19th century architecture particularly to accommodate young recently married couples. Nowadays they can host one or two persons inside. The artistic hand of the host has also decorated them in a unique way, with some interesting solutions combining heritage with modern art.
The garden is definitely a highlight of the outer space - large patches of grass are excellent places for reading in traditional deck-chairs while narrow, pebbled pathways fenced with brightly-colored flowers offer variety of views. The whole area is full of shades, convenient places to sit down and hang on with family or friends.
Open fire in the evening adds to the atmosphere and there are several possibilities how to organize a barbecue for the guests. You may choose a porch, a meadow or a barn on special occasions. A huge traditional barn, which is a separate architecture in the yard, is given to guests free of charge during the Christmas and New Year's rental season since it is ideal for parties and is equipped with all necessary things – from music and dancing place to a large dining table.
Croatian gastronomy may not be well-known on global scale but once you try delicious meals from our various regions you will know what good food really means. You may want to prepare the local dishes on your own and in that case we have several cookbooks to trigger off your inspiration together with some cooking utensils you may need in order to prepare the delicacies “under the cooking bell” or in a traditional metal pot.
In the traditional vegetable garden you may find tomatoes or peppers, mangold or leek but also some freshly grown spices. We also grow herbs for healthy beverages – mint, rosebud, sage or elder tea can be prepared as refreshments. In the orchard, there are numerous plum and walnut trees, pears, quinces and cherries but you may find raspberry, blackberry, currant and grapes.
The village is famous for wine production since the 15th century and many local wine producers sell good and refreshing white wines. There are numerous restaurants in the vicinity and the hosts may advice you on what specialties you may look for in each of them.
The whole area is an excellent destination for jogging, cycling and the property offers you fun with many traditional social games or you can borrow a book from the library (there is a good selection in English language too). Bird watching is another activity you may want to engage in since the old fruit trees offer ideal shelter for nests and many birds use them.
Only a 10-minute drive and you are in the well-known spa center called Terme Jezercica that offers several swimming pools and variety of wellness programs. Hiking in the nature park is another option and there are different routes – those more ambitious may even choose to climb the top of Medvednica and enjoy a view on Zagreb.
If you are more of a museum type, you can visit Peasants' Revolt Museum in Gornja Stubica, which is in a walking distance and the same case is with the open-air museum Diseca Starina in Slani Potok. By car you can visit world-famous Krapina Neanderthal Museum and Site or the birth-place of former Yugoslav President Tito in Kumrovec.
A short walk in the village may take you to the Gubec Lime Tree, a 450-year-old tree that is a reminder to the greatest revolt of the serfs led by Matija Gubec who is a national hero born in the village of Hizakovec in the 16th century. His memorial wooden cottage can be also visited and one of the recent attractions is a nursery with original off-springs of this famous Lime Tree.
After exploiting the cultural and historical attractions in the region you will find rest in the cottages, in the harmonious design of their interiors full of artworks – from sculptures, paintings, heritage items to ready-made designs done by your host Tomislav. Every object may tell you an interesting story and your host will share these stories with you and do his best to make your stay enjoyable.
