Overview

About the property

Apartment in St Ives, Cornwall, England - Comfortable, Characterful Flat In An Ideal Position, Close To Beaches, Shops And Restaurants

Our Barnoon flat is on the ground floor of a Victorian house which fronts onto a pedestrian path. There are gardens opposite the houses and really lovely views of the picturesque harbour and St Ives Bay. The flat is very comfortable, colourful and welcoming - you will feel at home here. And the position couldn't really be better - in one direction you are quickly in town, or at the Wharf and harbour beach. The other way takes you down to Porthmeor surf beach and the famous Tate Gallery. It's steep coming back up - hence the fabulous views, so it's not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. This is a one bedroom flat and we are not trying to pack people in - but we've recently added a sofa bed so that two adults who don't share a bed can stay there, or a couple can take a single child. It is (honestly) 5 minutes or less down to the harbour, beaches, shops and restaurants, yet Barnoon Terrace is traffic free, with not a car to be seen. With central heating, wifi, and a washer dryer, this flat is the perfect comfortable and convenient base for a holiday in this fabulous little town.

About Mary Brown

Hello! We are Mary and Henry Brown, the owners.

We live in London and have a wonderful team of people in St Ives who help us to take care of Barnoon and Seabirds House. Henry looks after any issues with the building, and I manage the bookings. I really enjoy the contact with our guests - many regulars feel like friends even when all the contact has been by email.

Apart from St Ives and family, our main interest is sailing - in a dinghy on the Thames and a bigger boat on the sea.

Mary Brown purchased this apartment in 1998

Why Mary Brown chose St Ives area

We bought our Barnoon Flat in 1998 - we fell in love with the view. And Barnoon Terrace, being pedestrian only, is wonderfully quiet. You look out over gardens and rooftops to the wide sweep of St Ives Bay and the lovely harbour. Not a car in sight.

We let the flat to other holidaymakers as well as using it ourselves from the start. Then we saw another property just up the hill which was in a very sorry state and managed to buy that and have the inside completely rebuilt making 5 more lovely flats. It's called Seabirds House - see E13912.

Spacious. Basically furnished living room. Good elsewhere . Spectacular views of St Ives Bay.

Had a fantastic stay in St Ives. Accommodation was generous in size but could have done with more comfortable seating in the living room. Kitchen and bathroom were both good. Great shower. View from window made our stay!

Peaceful haven in a beautiful town

  • 5 of 5

Barnoon is an ideal niche overlooking Harbour Beach, with captivating views along the coastline. The flat has all that you need for a peaceful holiday "far from the madding crowd" - and yet it is only minutes away from all the amenities of St Ives. Just be aware that there are steep hills in all directions, but that applies throughout St Ives. The outstanding views are well worth the effort as long as you are reasonably fit. I thoroughly recommend this apartment to visitors.

A comfortable flat in a superb position

  • 4 of 5

We had a most enjoyable week in St Ives, staying in Barnoon flat 1. The flat had everything we needed and was a very good base for exploring St Ives and other places in the area. We hadn't stayed in St Ives before and thought it was delightful but very crowded, especially during the day. We enjoyed a boat trip to seal island, walks to Carbis Bay and in Zennor, Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden, one bracing swim and several excellent dinners, especially at Alba, The Black Rock and the Seafood Cafe. Further afield, we visited RSPB Hayle Estuary (by train), the Minack theatre, Penzance and the tin mine at Levant which was fascinating. The only downside to St Ives is the difficulty parking: in the whole week we only managed once to find a space in the Barnoon carpark, having to use the big one in Trenwith the rest of the time. The walk up and down the steep hills was a good work-out but pretty miserable if it was raining.

We were out and about most of the time but might have felt a little cramped if we had been confined to the flat by the weather. The bed is very comfortable, the sofa less so. The flat was clean and tidy and the TV, washing machine etc all worked well and there was enough storage space for our stuff. The best thing about the flat is undoubtedly the view over St Ives bay which is stunning. It changes with the hour and the weather but is always beautiful. I would recommend the flat to any couple who don't mind walking up and down steep hills.

Owner's Response: Thank you for that - so glad you had a good time. The sofa is a sofa bed that we put in because we quite often have 2 friends who don't want to share a bed or pay for a larger flat. Not quite so good as a sofa though ... I'll stay on the lookout for something better.

Lovely flat with stunning view

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely, relaxing week in St Ives. The location of the flat is excellent - very peaceful, but only moments from the shops, harbour and beaches. The view from the bay window is really stunning, and the flat is very nicely furnished, with a well-equipped kitchen. We were also pleased to have a very good washing machine, and a bath with an extremely powerful shower! St Ives itself and the surrounding coastline were beautiful, and we definitely hope to return one day.

Great views, spacious flat but needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

Being perched up on Barnoon the flat has great views from the front window across St Ives. The flat was spacious and clean but the furnishings and furniture are all in need of some upgrading and replacing; for example the bedroom curtains were stained and the chest of drawers was very rickety. The kitchen had an eclectic mix of odd crockery and the plastic shelf in the fridge door kept falling off, but as St Ives has so many great places to eat out we hardly used the kitchen. Having holidayed in St Ives for the past 15 years I am aware of the varying standards of rental properties available and although this one is more at the budget end of the market it could do with some TLC to make it a really worth the money and to make the most of it's U.S.P - the views of lovely St Ives.

Owner's Response: I'm very sorry about the stain on the curtains, but thank you for alerting me to this. We will get them replaced as soon as possible. The general crockery was all matching at the beginning of the season although there has always been a mixture of mugs, so perhaps a guest has broken something and then replaced it. I apologise about the fridge shelf and chest of drawers and we will fix these things as soon as we can. I'm glad you enjoyed St Ives and had a good holiday. (We bought a new fridge. Hopefully the shelves will prove more robust!)

Location

Coast/Beach:

It's less than 5 minutes from our flat to the Porthmeor and Harbour beaches. Porthmeor is wide and faces west, so that there are often good waves rolling in from the Atlantic. There's a surf school, surf board and wetsuit hire, and a good cafe and it's overlooked by The Tate Gallery.

2 minutes round the headland is the smaller Porthgwidden Beach.

In the other direction is the picturesque harbour with its clean golden sand at low tide.

It's 6 minutes to the wide expanse of Porthminster beach.

Travel:

St Ives can be reached quite easily by train. Many main line trains from London to Penzance stop at St Erth from where there is a charming little branch line to St Ives with a frequent service. Seabirds is 15 minutes walk from the station or there are plenty of local taxis.

There is a small airport at Newquay, 30 miles away.

From west of London, including Heathrow Airport, it is a 5-6 hour drive to St Ives.

Distances:

Lands End 16 miles

Penzance 8 miles

Marazion and St Michael's Mount 9 miles

Minack cliff top open air theatre 14 miles

Falmouth (Maritime Museum) 24 miles

Eden Project 38 miles

Padstow 42 miles

Newquay (airport) 28 miles

Further Details:

Restaurants: St Ives has many very good restaurants - mostly open all year. We send some recommendations with your booking information.

We have 5 other flats at Seabirds House, just 20 metres from our Barnoon flat> so if the dates you want are booked, ask us, check out our own website or look for our other advertisement on Owners Direct

Shopping: The town also has all the small shops and banks you will need, including 2 small Co-op supermarkets. There is a Tesco on the outskirts of town, and Tesco also does home delivery to Seabirds.

Places of interest: Tate Gallery St Ives, Barbara Hepworth's House and Sculpture Garden, Bernard Leach Pottery, St Ives Museum

A local company, Oates Travel, does coach trips to other places of interest in Cornwall including the Eden Project.

Activities: Learn to surf on Porthmeor Beach at the St Ives Surf School.

Improve your painting and drawing skills at the St Ives School of Painting.

Fabulous cliff top walks - around the "Island" which takes around 45 minutes, or all the way to Zennor 2.5 hours if fit and fast, 4 hours to stop and gaze ...
