About Paul and Anna Slade

Hello, my name is Paul. My wife Anna and I have lived in the area for 25 years and have 3 teenage children. Having both been born in Devon, we have enjoyed the wonderful countryside the area has to offer, which inspired us to keep sheep, chickens and ducks. Both Anna and I have horticultural backgrounds, being a landscape gardener and florist by trade. We have designed and built a number of properties including cider barn, coach house, school and more recently an oak framed log cabin which we now live in. This then inspired us to build a south facing, cedar clad, glass fronted lodge which has spectacular views, making full use of the sun. So come and join us for a wonderful holiday in this unique location – you will never want to leave!

The property is surrounded by mature trees and is adjoining Woodbury Commons. This allows us to take lovely long walks over the heathland where nightingales and the Dartford worblers can be seen.

We are centrally located which makes it easy to reach the sea at Budliegh Salterton and Exmouth as well as Sidmouth, and only 10 minutes to Exeter.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is quiet, private and secure. We have 7 acres of land and keep sheep, ducks and chickens. We can sit peacefully beside our wildlife pond which is home to ducks, coots, dragonflies and danselflies, as well as carp and tench.

With so much available locally such as pubs, farm shops, the beach and other tourist attractions, we can offer a place to escape either after a busy day or just relaxing in the front garden soaking up the sun.

Absolutely stunning home!!

Having used HomeAway on many occasions, I have to say this is by far the most stunning and comfortable home I have stayed in. From the layout of the home to the stunning interior to the most amazing views. Our hosts went far and beyond to make our stay wonderful. I would highly recommend a stay here and I hope to be back in the. Sry near future.

Perfect

Spotlessly clean, we found it warm, comfortable and spacious. We cooked from fresh (mostly local produce) most nights with no problem - facilities were great. The view from the property is lovely and everything as advertised. We hope to return sometime maybe with family as there was plenty of room. However, the peace and quiet was perfect for just the two of us. Paul was very helpful and available close by - we had no cause to call on him during our stay as everything was perfect. We chose this property because we wanted somewhere that would be lovely to stay inside if the weather was poor. The weather was mostly fine though so we went for many walks locally and on the nearby moors. We explored the local coast, towns and villages which are beautiful - a great base for exploring the area.

Excellent rural retreat

Although this was booked at short notice under difficult personal circumstances, I would not hesitate to recommend this property. Paul and Anna were wonderful hosts and very approachable. The property was exceptional in all respects. I would definitely stay here again.

The location is superb,with fantastic views overlooking Woodbury Common. The local wildlife (ducks and hens) are very friendly.

All in all one of the best holiday cottages in Devon!

A beautiful cottage in a perfect setting

Our stay at Oak Lodge was lovely. We were there for 10 days over Christmas and New Year and felt perfectly relaxed. Paul and Anna are lovely hosts and made sure we had everything we needed. We'd love to come back !

What a Wonderful Place to Relax

We were hoping for a week of R & R and that is what was delivered.

From the moment we turned into the drive and were greeted by chickens, ducks, lots of sheep, one lucky ram and finally Paul.

The accommodation was superb, exceptionally clean, well designed and catering for all the needs of any visitors.

Lots of little extras had been thought of, soap, shower gel, magazines, napkins, lovely fresh flowers

and there were even scones etc. to enjoy on our arrival which were very welcome.

We left feeling energised and refreshed and shall definitely be returning.

Highly recommended, you could not fail to enjoy the situation or the accommodation.

A beautiful holiday home in beautiful surroundings.

Oak Lodge is a wonderful holiday home. Bright, spacious, extremely well equipped and tastefully decorated. The warm welcome from Paul and Anna with cream tea and local apple juice was wonderful. There are many places to visit within a short driving distance of the house, but we loved returning to the lodge at the end of each day. Our children loved the freedom of the outdoor space, the swing, the climbing ladder and the hens, chickens and ducks. They also loved walking to the pond and picking the lovely sunflowers.

A week wasn't long enough and I am very sure we will be returning, hopefully next year.

Special interest holidays:

As an area of outstanding natural beauty there are many trails and walks designed for walking and mountain biking. Locally there is the Jurassic coastline which has spectacular views and plenty of stops for refreshment along the way.

Coast/Beach:

The main coastal towns from Teignmoth to Axmouth are within a 30 minute drive. Budleigh Salterton is just 8 miles – 15 minutes by car - and is great for swimming. Not quite so far is Exmouth beach which is a more traditional seaside resort for ‘bucket & spade’ family fun, with plenty of water-sports on offer. Sidmouth beach is closer still, just 13 minutes away, which caters for all round family fun with sand, pebbles and rock pools and it’s also great for swimming.

Travel:

Exeter city centre is 8 miles away with railway stations on both the London Paddington and Waterloo lines. To nearest airport is Exeter International Airport which is approximately 11 miles to the east of Exeter. A car is recommended.

To find us, leave M5 at Junction 30 onto the A3052 (Lyme Regis). Within 5.25 miles at Halfway Inn turn right onto the B3180 towards Exmouth. ….Oak Lodge is on the right within 0.5 mile.

Exeter city centre is 8 miles.

The village of Aylesbeare is 1 mile.

Sidmouth beach is 8 miles

Exmouth beach is 8 miles

Budliegh Salerton beach is 7 miles

Further Details:

There is so much for families in this area. Crealy Park appeals to children (even adults), of all ages. ‘Go Ape’ at Haldon Forest if you’re into climbing trees and sliding across high wires. For the less energetic there’s the tamer activities of zoos in Paignton, Sparkwell (Dartmoor Zoological Park) and Exmoor (Exmoor Zoo). There’s also the Plymouth National Aquarium, Pennywell Farm and the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth (which is free!).

For entertainment possibilities in all weathers there’s Bicton Park, Pecorama and Seaton Tramway. Indoor swimming pools in Axminster and Sidmouth. Small local cinemas at Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, with a multi-plex at Exeter. Boat trips run from Topsham, Exmouth and Sidmouth and boats for hire are available at Beer. Traditional activities such as fossil hunting is at Lyme and hours of fun in the rock pools are at Sidmouth.

Families with young children are well catered for in Budleigh with the beach and play park nearby. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens is lovely and just a few minutes away. Powderham Castle is in a beautiful setting beside the Exe estuary. The Cathedral City of Exeter has shops, leisure centres, cinemas and huge variety of restaurant and wine bar options. Within the area there are various villages, it includes fabulous local farm shops which provide local produce of meats, fish and veg. The closest farm shop Greendales is 2 miles away, and along with all the usual produce which they grow and rear, they also own their own fleet of boats and sell their caught fish. They also have their own fish and chip shop on site either take-away for a meal in their café. If you want a more elegant evening out, there are good quality local pubs and restaurant. The larger supermarkets of Tescos and Waitrose are within a 15 minute drive.There are ample opportunities for walking, riding and cycling in the East Devon Common which is just 5 minutes by car, or a few minutes longer with a pleasant cycle ride through the country.
