2 Traditional Country Cottages - Sandplace, Looe. Sleeping 3 & 5 respectively - Cosy Nook

Overview

Property

Updated: 27-Apr-2016
2 beautiful cottages near Looe, Cornwall, Sleeping 3 & 5 respectively - Tranquil country-cosy retreats, just 5 minutes from the lively coastal town of Looe

Cosy Nook and Lady Grace’s Woodview were built around 1840. Cosy Nook was refurbished in 2010 and upgraded in 2014. Lady Grace’s has just undergone a complete and thorough renovation and refit, completed for the summer of 2015. Both now offer high quality accommodation whilst still retaining characterful original features.

The two cottages can be booked individually or together at a discounted rate.

These tranquil country-cosy retreats are just five minutes from Looe, with the charm and beauty that this ancient fishing port offers.

COSY NOOK really does live up to its name, on a hillside looking down the beautiful Looe Valley with all its abundance of wildlife you can see from the grounds, including herons, kingfishers and buzzards flying within the valley. The setting really is quite magical. With many interesting walks in all directions, this is a great base for discovering this enchanting corner of South Cornwall. Inside, the cottage has heaps of character with beamed ceilings and a homely feel. Snuggle up in front of the wood burning stove on cooler evenings and snooze in the south facing garden by day.

The open plan lounge with dining area nestled in the bay of the window, overlooks the garden with wonderful views down the valley. A wonderful woodburner to cuddle up in front and a 21" TV/DVD Player with a selection of DVDs to choose from.

All mod cons are provided in the luxury, oak fitted kitchen including a dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and cafetiere.

Up a few steps from the open plan ground floor and you will find the bathroom, recently fitted out with a luxurious slipper bath, underfloor heating and a heated chrome towel rail. On the first floor you will find the two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a very comfortable double bed and wonderful views down the valley, while the smaller, single bedroom also has a very comfortable bed and equally wonderful views.

LADY GRACE'S has undergone total renovation (finalised in April/May 2015) which has transformed this cottage into a beautiful, fully modernised and a “super” insulated cottage, cleverly offering a modern contemporary feel yet retaining her “old world” charm.

Also south facing, LADY GRACE'S relishes the sun all day with fantastic views down the valley and wonderful wildlife to spot and enjoy. In the gardens outside, a large selection of animals are commonly spotted such as buzzards, geese, herons, owls, hedgehogs, slow worms, pheasants and quite often the deer come from the woods behind to graze on the flowers in the garden! Inside, the cottage has a lovely, comfortable feel with its inglenook fireplace with wood burner (and uncovered “clome” oven), beamed ceilings and slate flagstone floor. The ground floor is of an open-plan design incorporating a high spec. fitted kitchen, luxury dining and a fantastically comfortably appointed lounge. Electric heating can keep the cottage snug alternatively a lovely inglenook fireplace with log burner can give a romantic and traditional ambiance to the cottage on both those cold winters nights and lazy summer evenings. Imagine yourself cuddled up in front of the woodburner on the huge “snuggle chair”.

All utilities are included within the tariff and logs provided for the duration of your stay. All the wood provided is sourced on site from the now managed woodland behind the cottages, helping to reduce your carbon footprint during your stay.

Whilst renovating the original “clome oven”, was unearthed and is now visible in the fireplace. Clome ovens were traditional South Country cooking ovens where a fire would be made inside and then the ashes removed once hot and cooking would begin using the retained heat.

The three-foot-thick natural stone and cob walls, ensure the cottage is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. All mod cons are provided in the kitchen including a dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster and cafetiere, etc. A large flat-screen Smart TV is provided in the lounge. For those cosy nights in, in front of the log burner, a large library of DVD's are provided along with a good selection of books and games too. WIFI is also provided free of charge.

Take a few steps up from the ground floor and you will find the luxury bathroom, fitted out in 2015 with a luxurious twin ended bath with an electric shower over, low level WC, large vanity unit housing the hand basin, a heated chrome towel rail and electric heating. Towels are provided at no extra charge.

Up on the first floor you will find the two bedrooms.

Through the traditional style oak planked latched door, with handmade fittings, you will find the spacious master bedroom which has a very comfortable cast king sized bed, wonderful views down the valley, original fireplace, beamed ceiling, solid oak furniture and large flat screen Smart TV and all modern conveniences.

The second bedroom is located on the opposite side off the landing and is also accessed via a traditional style oak latched door. It enjoys a bespoke bunk bed and a further single day bed. This also benefits from a flat screen TV/DVD and also enjoys the wonderful views of this magical retreat.

Outside, to the front of the cottage is a very large utility type building that was originally believed to be the bath house to the cottages, gifted to the then tenants by the mighty Morval Estate as a wedding present. It is now used as a large utility area, housing a washing machine, sink, ironing board, iron, etc. This is very spacious and can be utilised for extra storage during your stay if needs be. Outside of the cottage enjoys a large decked area with large table and chairs, charcoal BBQ and there is a smaller gravelled patio area to the front with table and chairs. Both of these areas enjoy the stunning views down the Looe Valley and the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings, whilst being screened from guests at the adjoining Cosy Nook.

Up to date images of Lady Grace's will be posted mid April 2015 but take a look at the progress on http://looecottageholidays.wix.com/cottages

Fantastic Holiday!!

  • 5 of 5

What a pretty cottage in a beautiful area. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and can't wait to return. There is so much wildlife just on the doorstep, some of it we had to photograph and look up on our return home. What a lovely, peaceful and comfortable retreat, yet so close to the coast and local attractions. 5 out of 5.

Owner's Response: Thank you, we find Cosy Nook a magical place too! The varieties of birds alone are too numerous to mention. Buzzards, King Fishers, Sand Martins, the Geese flying at head height down the valley in the morning, the Owls in the wood behind the cottage, the list just goes on and on. We had to look up what the Slow Worms were that you regularly spot in the garden. The young deer that frequently graze on the front lawn is a joy (even though they like to eat the flowers). We feel that it is just a special place. Thank you again for your comments.

Comfortable, clean cottage in "quiet" location. Railway and road noise is not intrusive.

Listing does not mention difficult access to parking at the cottage.

Access to parking at the cottage is not for the faint hearted. It is up a steep slope with very, very difficult turning. We drive a VW Golf and gave up driving up to the cottage. Intead we parked on the main road and walked up a steep path about 100yds to the cottage. We ate out every evening and would reccommend the Polraen Hotel almost next door and in Looe itself at the far end of the High street, Mawgans.

Looe is very busy during the day but much quieter in the evenings. Talland Bay is a good beach, the Café has been refurbished and food is good.

Not able to recommend with access to the cottage.

Owner's Response: We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the cottage lived up to your expectations. We are a little surprised that you found it difficult to enter the drive. We personally drive one of the largest MPVs and do not find it excessively difficult. For 5 months at the beginning of the year we had many contractors with various sizes and shapes of vans and trucks that all managed to do so. We have updated our site information to point out that the cottage is located on the side of a valley (hence the lovely views!) Yes, Looe and the surrounding area has many fantastic eateries, too numerous to mention and we find The Polraen, which is very close to the cottage, very good and we would recommend it too. This year it is the 150th anniversary of the Looe Branch Line, renowned as being one of the most scenic train journeys in the UK. Sandplace Halt, at the bottom of the valley, is on this Branch Line. To celebrate the anniversary, during September this year, there shall be steam trains running along the line. One of my favourite stories as a child was The Railway Children….WOW. Thank you for your feedback. Personally, we can’t wait to be back there again.

Facilities

From the Owner

We love the peace and tranquillity of Lady Grace's, yet we can be amidst the hustle and bustle of Looe, which we love, in less than 5 minutes. On visiting Looe we still, numerous years later, have not seen and done everything that is available there. Year on year a little more seems to be added or another event organised within its annual calendar. We can't recommend Looe enough!
