About the Owner

Gary and I live in Dorset with our two daughters Emily and Charlotte. We first visited Gaucin in 1999 when my parents retired and bought property in the village. La Roca was built in 2004. We visit Gaucin every year at various times to see family and to spend time in the village and to enjoy the beautiful surrounding areas.

Gaucin is situated in the hills, approximately 25 minutes drive from the coast so it is easy enough to enjoy the local beaches.

Typical spanish holiday

The villa provides a comfortable accomodation. Its floor is stone all through and the kitchen is well provided for should you wish to cook. The sun gets to the pool side in the afternoon and there are 2 sun loungers . Unfortunately the pool is not heated even though the advert states so and therefore we found the pool to cold for the grandchild. We rented in September . The villa is 5 mins walk from the main square and the village it's self is very friendly and Spanish. You can eat out for as little as 25 euros for 4 or enjoy a lovely meal LA FRUCTUOSA although you may need to book. Opposite the resturant is a delictence owned by an Scottish lady who is really helpful. She told us that we could use a pool in the next village at a hotel . There are several supermarkets and places to enjoy coffee.

The road to Gaucin is very winding and in parts uneven and therefore if going to the beach you need to allow 45 mins to get there. There is a great fruit shop on the side of the road if you wish to get some fresh fruit.

On the whole this is a great place if you like Spanish tradition and you are prepared to drive up the mountain.

From the Owner

We bought Casa May Clara and land from my parents who had retired in Gaucin. We then built La Roca on the land in 2004. Gaucin is a beautiful white village set up in the hills of Andalucia, 30 k from the coast.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Train : at 8 Kilometres Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

The area is very popular with walkers and bird watchers. There are many paths in the Andalucian countryside.

The mountainous area has many raptors; eagles and vultures are seen above the higher slopes and many of the smaller raptor species can be seen at lower levels including buzzards, kestrels and harriers. The close proximity of Africa makes the area rich in migrating species during the spring (late February to June) and autumn (August to late October). Particular species that can be seen locally on a regular basis locally include Egyptian and Griffon vultures and the European bee eater. Storks can be seen in the area.

The Sierra Crestillina lies to the north of Casares and has a well-marked low level walk on the east side of the sierra with higher level but less well-marked paths for those determined to reach the top.

The Alcornocales National Park lies to the west of the village.

There is a path up the side of El Hacho, the peak that dominates the village.

San Luis de Sabinillas is 30km, 40mins by car. There are extensive public access sandy beaches within the town and north and south along the Costa. To the south lies the marina at La Duquesa with its yachts and many restaurants, bars and cafes. The marina also offers boat trips, scuba diving and other popular sea side activities. Further down the coast, the beaches at La Tarifa are both beautiful and many are undeveloped, within designated areas of natural park.

Car hire/use of car strongly recommended.

Malaga Airport: 120km, 1hr 25mins by car.

Car Hire: Large selection of car hire companies. Discounted car hire is available through Helle Hollis.

Gibraltar: 60km, 1 hr by car.

Border controls at Gibraltar can lead to some delays for entry into Spain. Many enter Spain as foot passengers and hire a car once over the border to speed entry.

Nearest large port Algeciras; 70km, 1hr 15mins by car with ferries to Ceuta and Tangiers.

Ronda; 40km, 45mins by car. El Tajo gorge, bull ring, Palacio Mondragon, Plaza Duquesa.

Ubrique; 45km, 1hr by car. Historic white village, famous for leather trade.

Jimena de la Frontera; 25km, 35mins by car. Castle, quiet white village.

Castellar de la Frontera; 50km, 1hr 15mins by car. Castle, Guadarranque reservoir.

Seville; 155km, 2hr 15mins by car. Cathedral, Plaza, Alcazar Palace.

Granada; 215km, 2hrs 45min by car. Alhambra - booking essential.

Further Details:

The village has a number of small supermarkets which offer a good range of fruit, vegetables and other groceries. There are other small shops including chemist, bakery, electrical goods, newsagent, clothing, gift shops etc. There is a Cajamar and a Unicaja bank, both with cash dispensers. Shop opening times follow the typical Spanish pattern with an extended lunch hour and early evening opening. Most shops are closed on Sunday.

The village and other local villages hold markets. Gaucin has a covered market which is open three days a week. Market days vary from village to village.

The area has many road side stalls offering local vegetables.

There are many restaurants, in the village and in the nearby villages. We can provide additional information on local dining. Opening times vary with the seasons and it is recommended that you make a reservation for a table in order to be sure of opening times.

All of the villages have cafes and tapas bars, some with excellent views of the surrounding countryside.

There is a taxi rank in the centre of the village.

El Colmenar, 14km, 20mins by car has Gaucin rail station and offers an alternative way of reaching Ronda or travelling down to Algeciras.

From the Owner

The property enjoys stunning views of the village, the mountains, Gibraltar and across to Africa. The property is within easy walking distance of the castle and the centre of the village where there are a number of shops, bars and restaurants. The outdoor terrace areas and pool can be enjoyed all year round but are particularly welcome in the summer for "al fesco" eating, sunbathing and swimming. La Roca has central heating and a wood burning stove for the cooler months of the year. In and around Gaucin, you can explore the various local walks, go horse riding, play tennis and visit many of the other white villages around. Ronda town is only a 40 minute drive away and well worth a visit.
