About the property

Farmhouse in Petrignano Del Lago, Perugia, Umbria, Italy - Il Granaio Is In A Rural Location But Only A 10 Minute Walk From The Small Village Of Petrignano

The 3-bedroom Il Granaio has been converted from an original grain store and this double story building retains the beautiful brickwork windows of the old building. Originally these vast windows would have been left unglazed to allow air to circulate freely and dry the wheat. Now they allow light to flood into the living spaces below with an impressive mezzanine level with floorboards made from old wine barrels from where you can admire the views towards the nearby hill town of Cortona. Enjoy dining and barbecue's outside in the shaded al fresco dining area with seating for 8. The well maintained grounds are gently terraced with the pool and large lawned area around the pool on the terrace above the house. Swim in the large (14 x 5 m) and beautifully stone lined pool with surrounding loungers and shaded areas. The property is entirely fenced with security gates, but being situated on a wine and olive farm there are lovely walks and a picnic can be enjoyed in the nearby woodland which forms part of the farm. Il Graniao is part of the boutique winery Cantina Goccia. Goccia simply means drop in Italian and the emblem of the drop can clearly be seen on the gates to the property. Being close to the Tuscan Umbrian border this property is ideally positioned to explore nearby Lake Trasimeno, Cortona, Montepulciano, Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto, Florence, Arezzo and Siena. The closest golf course Valdichiana is only a 15 minute drive. The property has both heating and air conditioning in all rooms and all windows have built in mosquito nets. Il Graniao and pool are in the grounds of a manor house which forms the principle home on the Cantina Goccia wine farm. This larger house will remain closed when visitors are renting Il Graniao and visitors will have sole use of the gardens and pool. Florence is 1 hour away and Perugia airport only 40 minutes drive. Private pool, extensive grounds and dedicated woodland.

About Ceri Parke

My husband Steve and I both grew up in Africa but have been living in the UK since the 80's. My husband is in the technology field and I am involved in property development. Restoring our property in Umbria has been a dream come true.

Ceri Parke purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why Ceri Parke chose Castiglione del Lago

My husband and I bought our wine farm in Umbria more than 10 years ago and since then have embarked on a program of rebuilding the original buildings and re-planting and extending the vineyards. We love the area and the fact that it is truly a rural area with farmers who have been farming their patch for generations. Its rustic without being too isolated and is wonderfully positioned to explore other areas in the Tuscan/Umbrian region.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Il Granaio is on a farm and anyone who is interested or likes wine and olive oil, will love the experience of being on the farm.

Notes on accommodation: Accommodation and furnishing is to a very high standard. A number of pieces of furniture are bespoke. For example all the headboards in the bedrooms have been made from old wine barrels. This architect converted home has retained a number of features from its previous life as a rural building and blended its history with a contemporary finish inside which befits a building like this located in the middle of a vineyard. Outside: Alfresco dining and BBQ area. Pool and shaded area around pool. Vineyard and woodland walks. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are provided, including swimming towels and are changed weekly. Additional housekeeping can be provided on request including cooked meals. Other: Mezzanine level with chaise lounge on the upper floor forms an ideal area to escape and enjoy the views.

modern comfort in beautiful quiet setting near Tuscan wonders

  • 5 of 5

We loved spending the last week of December at Il Granaio. The wood-burning stove was fabulous, as were the modern comfortable furnishings and the wood-fired grill outside. Well equipped and meticulously kept. The home is surrounded by an ocean of rosemary and lovely landscaping; excellent for cooking. It is a peaceful site with beautiful views and walks, yet so close to wonderful places like Lake Trasimeno, Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, Siena.. Ceri left numerous great suggestions on restaurants, groceries and local wine tasting. Would love to visit in all seasons; highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Dear Julia Thank you for your feedback and so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. Many people think of this region as just a summer destination and this could not be further from the truth. Summer is wonderful and offers fantastic hot weather, however there is so much to do in this area and each season sees offers interest and a change in the surrounding landscape. Hope to see you back in the future. Best wishes Ceri

A high quality villa with a fabulous pool in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

The old granary has been converted with high quality and taste. It sits by itself in the grounds of a large and lovely old farmhouse that is kept empty when the granary is rented out. It is quiet and fairly isolated. The pool is the best we have ever had in many a villa rental - beautiful green rough marble, gently salted and of a good size and depth. The dining area looks across the vineyard to Cortona, and is nicely shaded. The shaded/sunny loungers around the pool also work well throughout the day. The location in the middle of Castiglione del Lago, Cortona and Montepulciano provides easy access to these lovely old towns, with great coffee houses and restaurants.

Fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic property in a fantastic setting, rolling countryside, and being amidst the vines of a high quality working wine farm just takes it to another level. House and grounds are immaculate, the pool is stunning (not done justice by the photos) - and the team looking after everything led by Irene and Riccardo is fantastic, managing to be both unobtrusive and super helpful all at once. Highly recommended.

Excellent place to stay in terms of location and quality of accommodation & facilities

  • 5 of 5

We were warmly greeted by Irene on our arrival and were really impressed with the design and quality of the accommodation & the grounds. The welcome box was lovely and of a much higher quality than we have received at other properties. Riccardo came to see us and gave us a fascinating insight into the wine production and enabled us to buy some more bottles. It was lovely to be able to walk around the estate and to pick fresh fruit and vegetables form the gardens and we made full use of these as we love to cook. The pool was a definite highlight, so beautiful and such a good size compared to what is usually available. It was great to have the gardeners come daily and deal with the pool, rubbish and the BBQ we we used often.

The only thing we would request would be more crockery as this was rather limited in the number of each item, however this is a really minor thing.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, wish we had had more than a week and would definitely come back. On our return we ordered some more wine from the estate which has just arrived, enabling our enjoyment of the holiday to continue.

Too good to share!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this lovely rural house. It is beautifully appointed and there is a feel of the modern mixed within a rural setting. It is clean and beautifully furnished with wine included in our welcome pack!

The photos do not really do justice to the pool, bedrooms and surrounding area. It is so lovely we'd love to keep how good it is to ourselves. The lack of TV suited us perfectly and we had no problems with the WiFi whcih is also accessible by the pool. The grounds are extensive and collecting fresh fruit and veg from the gardens was a superb addition to our holiday experience.

Each bedroom has en-suites which was perfect for our adult family.

Air conditioning was much needed and we enjoyed some spectacular thunderstorms too. We loved Cortona and Castiglione and Fabio at the Poggio Bertaio winery gave a wonderful tour.

Communication with the owner was excellent and travel could only be improved if you could fly to Perugia on a Saturday or lets were from Sunday to Sunday.

We loved it. Thank you!
