Cottage in Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland - Quiet Location a few minutes walk From town centre. Nearest beach 2 miles.

The Coach House, built from stone in the early 1900s under a slate roof, was converted in 2014 to a cosy and modern 2 bedroom house for four occupants. It has a south facing private patio/garden with garden furniture and barbecue as well as a bike shed.

It is within a stone's throw of the town centre with its harbour, castle, galleries, shops, and restaurants. It is also just a very short walk to the river and woodland.

The carpeted King and twin bedrooms are upstairs, with very comfortable mattresses and have ample storage space. They are separated by the main bathroom which has a shower bath, toilet, wash-hand basin, mirror with shaving point, shelving, scales, first aid box, and grab handles for use in the bath if required.

The downstairs wet-room with shower, toilet and wash-hand basin is conveniently opposite the main door between the kitchen and the sitting room.

The sitting room is south facing, light, airy and very comfortable. The stove in the corner gives extra warmth in winter as well as a cosy atmosphere as you sink into the leather chairs to watch TV or read a book or drop off for a snooze. The tri-fold sliding doors give direct access to the terrace and garden with the golf course beyond.

The kitchen is fully equipped but rather than waste water and energy there is a drying rack in the boiler room to dry your laundry overnight and there is plenty of hot water, washing up liquid and gloves to deal with your dirty dishes - which shouldn't be excessive for 4 guests!

You can park your car directly in front of the house in the driveway - and you can bring your dog too (just one please!) provided s/she doesn't mind sleeping downstairs. There is a stair gate to prevent access to the carpeted landing and bedrooms.

Visitors are welcome at the golf course which is directly behind.

About Gabrielle Harrington

Hello!

We are the Harringtons and we live outside Borgue, about 6 miles from Kirkcudbright with two Yorkshire terriers, a vegetable garden and a view of the sea.

This wee house will eventually be our retirement home when we are too knackered to keep cutting the grass where we currently live - but, in the meantime, we would like you to enjoy it and the wonderful amenities this area has to offer.

We have old fashioned willingness to serve wherever we can, so are at your disposal for any guidance or help you may need.

Why Gabrielle Harrington chose Dumfries & Galloway

We bought this building in a semi derelict condition completed its renovation in 2013.

The house stands back from the road and is far enough from the town centre to provide a calm retreat - but is also near enough to leave the car behind and stroll into town, or across the road to join the riverside walk along the Dee.

The house has a paved terrace and lovely quiet garden at the back with garden furniture/parasol and a fire pit/barbecue if you would like to eat outside. The garden backs on to the golf course and is full of bird song so you feel you are not in town at all.

What makes this cottage unique

Kirkcudbright is Scotland's artists' town. Many well known artists lived and painted here and there is still a very lively art community and about seven galleries. There is a full programme of events and activities throughout the summer, including a Jazz Festival, the Arts and Crafts Trail, and a Tattoo. All the events can be found by logging on to www.kirkcudbright.co.uk.

The house is uncluttered and restful and is adorned by a few of Gabrielle's paintings which can be bought (or not) as a souvenir of a good holiday.

Nearby Castle Douglas is our local "food town" and Kirkcudbright has a farmers market on the 4th Sunday of each month. If you are a foodie and enjoy cooking, the kitchen contains some good cookery books and the garden contains fresh herbs for you to pick.

A cookery school with an excellent café (also offering pre ordered home made bread for collection in the morning) has recently opened just over the road.

If you would like a selection from the café's menu to be waiting at the house when you arrive, this can be arranged.

August 2014 : A great week's holiday. Been to all the things to see in the leaflets including red kites flying and feeding. The accommodation is lovely. Clean and well set up and the owners do everything they can to help with your stay. A good all round holiday.



September 2014 : Great cottage. Very comfortable and clean. We visited several places during our all too brief stay and highlights include seeing dolphins swimming off the Isle of Whithorn and finding many mushrooms in Kirroughtree forest.



September 2014 : Our first visit to this part of Scotland but won't be our last. Sun and blue skies every day and the Coach House was a perfect abode - so comfortable with everything we needed. Beautiful secluded bays to explore - Carrick Bay a hidden gem. Thanks to Gabrielle for the beautiful house and for her advice - and for the new wifi. We will be back.

A locking bike shed is right by the house. There is parking for 2 cars in the shared drive. Also plenty of kerbside parking if you are worried about reversing out. Utility Room: Small utility area under stairs with gas boiler, freezer, iron, ironing board, clothes drying rack, cleaning materials, recycling containers. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen and towels provided, including kitchen tea towels and cleaning cloths. For bookings over 1 week, fresh linens can be provided on request.

Beautiful well equipped cottage

The Coach House is a beautiful, well equipped and comfortable cottage. It is ideally located for walking into the centre of Kirkcudbright - loved the privacy and lack of traffic noise. The cottage has a modern interior, is beautifully decorated and complete with everything needed: this includes a drying room (boiler room). Would definitely recommend to others.

We had an excellent stay at the Coach House. On arrival we had short bread milk tea coffee and fresh flowers waiting on us thanks to Gabrielle. The Coach House was very clean and tidy to a high standard and we soon settled in. There was plenty information in a book left for us to read of what to do and where to go in the area. Even the history on the renovation of The Coach House. We had a lovely relaxing 10 day holiday and before the end of last week we decided that we would like to book up again for next year. For the last 5 years we have had holidays on the west coast of Scotland and this was the best place we have been to and also recommend it to friends

Top notch accommodation in Kirkcudbright.

Extremely clean,well equipped,comfortable cottage. Well designed with lovely outdoor garden area (with fresh herbs). Ideally located to enjoy everything Kirkcubright and surrounding areas have to offer. Owner provided exemplary service. Walks and beaches in area very much enjoyed by our family.

"A Peaceful Haven"

The Coach House is just off the main road in a quiet drive, with a pleasant rear view, within sight of the local golf course. Just a few minutes walk from Kirkcudbright town centre, it is handy for local shops, restaurants and tourist attractions.

There are numerous opportunities for relaxing walks along the river, and around the harbour and town, in addition to easy access to surrounding countryside. The local people are friendly and helpful.

The Coach House itself is well laid-out and spacious, very well equipped, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We highly recommend it, and hope to return.

lovely cottage

You won't be disappointed if you choose to go to this lovely cottage ,it has everything you need ,like home from home,well equipped kitchen if you choose to cook, location really good 5minute walk to all amenities and a good base for exploring the beautiful area, plenty of dog walks close by,all in all a beautiful clean cottage in a great place, would definitely use again thanks to the Harringtons.

Home from Home

We have just returned from a week's holiday staying at The Coach House Kirkcudbright. What a beautiful home from home with everything provided for our needs, especially the blackout blinds in the bedrooms and the stair gate which made life so much easier with a 2 year old. Gabrielle has thought of everything to make our stay so relaxing.

The location is good for visiting many interesting places. Our granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Cocoa Bean and Dalscombe Park but also enjoyed our visits to Caerlaverock Castle and Drumlanrig Castle.

Kirkcudbright is a lovely Harbour town which does appear to have something each week for residents and visitors. We especially enjoyed Scottish Night and there a some lovely walks. The town has a number of Coffee Shops and we had a lovely meal at The Kirkcudbright Bay Hotel. All in all we had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay and can thoroughly recommend The Coach House.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest sandy beach is at the Dhoon, about two miles out of town. There is ample parking there and a well maintained grassy picnic area and public toilets.

The unspoilt Carrick shore is about 10 miles distant to the West with safe swimming from a sandy beach and many lovely walks.

To the East, the Solway coastal drive takes you past Dundrennan Abbey through Auchencairn to the pretty villages of Kippford and Rockliffe, and on to Carsethorn and Sweetheart Abbey.

Travel:

The nearest airport is Prestwick (Ayr) - about 1 hr 45 mins away.

The nearest rail station is Dumfries - about 45 minutes drive.

There are regular local buses but if you intend to visit the area outside of town the use of the car is advised.

Further Details:

Kirkcudbright is known for the clear light which brought many artists to live here. Broughton House with its gardens in the High Street, where Hornel lived and worked, is now in the hands of the Scottish National Trust and is open to the public in the afternoons.

There were seven art galleries at the last count and various events connected to art and craft, as well as more general entertainment, throughout the spring and summer. The full programme is published on the www.kirkcudbright.co.uk. website.

The town centre is dominated by McLellands Castle and the working harbour round which local life revolves. There are numerous eating places from simple fish and chips by the harbour side to gourmet meals at the Selkirk Arms.

Just outside town is a wild-life park and not far away is the farm where the renowned Cream o' Galloway Ice Cream is made. In Twynholm the Cocoa Bean factory is a wonderful place for both children and adults to indulge in a little chocolate luxury.

At Upper Senwick Farm, a few miles away, you can go Alpaca trekking, or at South Park Farm in the same area you can pony trek around the local countryside too.

Kirroughtree Forest Park, also just to our north, was the first in Scotland to be given dark skies status. Bring your telescope if that's your interest, or just lie on your back on the beach and wonder at everything out there.

Cyclists will enjoy our quiet by-ways and those with a more rugged taste in biking can take to the 7 Stanes mountain biking tracks just to our north.

Galloway is, above all, a farming area and Kirkcudbright lies amid rolling farmland between the Solway Firth and the Galloway Hills so lovers of the outdoors in all its variety will find all they could wish for here.
