Stylish Seaside Cottage With Nature Reserve, River And Sea Views

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage in Rye Harbour, Sussex, England - Peaceful And Relaxing Location, 15 Minutes Walk To The Beach

Seakale Cottage is located in the heart of Rye Harbour Village (2 miles from Rye) and is arranged over 3 floors, comfortably accommodating up to 6 guests (plus 2 travel cots). It makes the ideal location for a relaxing break with family or friends as it does a romantic getaway for two. We are also dog friendly.

The cottage has been decorated in muted off whites and blues, in keeping with its coastal setting, together with quirky vintage finds. Textured cushions and throws will ensure you feel comfortable and snug. On cooler nights, simply throw a few logs in the wood burner for that cosy cottage feel. White-washed floors and plantation shutters add to the 'beach house' feel, together with far reaching views of the nature reserve, river and sea.

The cottage is nestled at the far end of a quiet road and has an attached cottage on one side and its own storage barn on the other, with a private parking space. The road is an unmade shingle track with a hotchpotch of new and ramshackle properties, giving a distinctly bohemian feel to the area. It's incredibly peaceful and quite often the only sound you will hear is the cry of the gulls.

Just a stone's throw from the property is the 800 acre Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, with paths endlessly criss-crossing in the directions of Rye, Winchelsea, Camber Castle and the beach. It provides an idyllic escape from the crowds at Camber Sands during the summer months. Here you will find outstandingly beautiful landscapes, whatever the season, with pools and lagoons and wide open skies, perfect for birdwatchers, artists, dog walker, ramblers and cyclists alike. It's the ideal place to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the nature reserve offers a varied programme of activities throughout the year, many of which are ideal and interesting for children.

Rye harbour is a working harbour with an active fishing fleet. It's not a picture-postcard village designed for tourists, but a friendly community of fisherman, artisans and labourers, in which many generations have lived all their lives. The village consists of a mixture of weather-boarded properties, period cottages and tumbledown seaside dwellings. There is a well-stocked village store, 2 cafes (one of which is an art gallery), 2 pubs (one waterfront), a boat club and lifeboat station.

These coastal flatlands make a particularly ideal base for a relaxing holiday with dogs. There are literally miles of flat, dog-friendly footpaths, where dogs can roam off-lead for hours. The Romney Marshes provide an endless variety of walks as well as a choice of uncrowded beaches, where they will enjoy racing across the vast expanses of shingle and sand at low tide.

About Jane V

Jane V purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jane V chose Rother

Having grown up in Kent, with a love of the coast, many a weekend has been spent exploring and enjoying the beaches along this wild and beautiful coastline.  Our main home is less than an hour away, where we live with our three boys and two dogs.  Between us, we love all that is ‘outdoor’, which makes Rye Harbour the perfect base for our seaside cottage.  We have explored many beaches around the UK and this is one of our all-time favourites, with its wide-open skies and incredible landscapes.  You can be sure that when guests are not here enjoying it for themselves, then we most certainly will be!

What makes this cottage unique

We love the warm and friendly community that Rye Harbour has to offer. It's non-touristy and 'off the beaten track', so a great place to escape from today's busy lifestyles and dream of a different pace of life. It's peaceful and relaxing, with no street lights, so perfect for star gazing, not forgetting a good night's sleep! The nature reserve is literally just a few minute's walk from the front door, and there are miles of dog-friendly paths, leading to huge deserted beaches. It's the perfect spot to pack up a picnic and head off to watch the sun go down.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We've just returned after a four night stay and we've had a fantastic time! The cottage was beyond our expectations; lovely shabby chic decoration, plenty of room - especially the bathroom, the cottage was relaxing and homely. Jane (the owner) thought of everything, even down to recommendations of various restaurants in which we tried. She provided us with all the home comforts such as cake, biscuits and all the necessities (milk, coffee, sugar etc.), it is also very dog friendly with lovely walks through the nature reserve which is just around the corner with the beach also, Jane even provides the guests with doggie treats! Every thing was provided to us with prompt and efficient help with anything we could possibly need. We would definitely stay again and would certainly recommend Seakale cottage to anyone - you won't be disappointed!"

"We have had a wonderful couple of days. Lovely cottage, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. A great night's sleep, with comfortable beds and pillows. Thank you for the welcome pack and cake. We can vouch for Marino's fish and chips, they were delicious! Can also recommend Mahdi Spice (leaflet in the drawer) for Indian takeaway - they offer free delivery. Hope to return."

"Loved everything about this cottage! Perfect location, beautifully decorated with absolutely everything thought of; comfy beds, powerful shower, softest, fluffiest towels......I could go on forever! Jane goes above and beyond to make sure the stay is perfect from thoughtful welcome gifts to helping with local info. Thanks for a perfect weekend. We will be back! xxxx."

"Nice and cosy, particularly enjoyed the wood burner. The cottage was really clean and we had a super walk around the nature reserve. Extra thanks for the doggy treats, which Daisy thoroughly enjoyed."

Mini-break at Sea Kale

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very comfortable, clean, well-equipped and tastefully decorated. The extra touches such as the wood burner and wood provided, as well as the milk and cake on arrival and the other essential supplies, were all gratefully received. The location is perfect for walks and birdwatching, as it is close to the Rye, Hastings and Dungeness Reserves. A great place to spend quality time with the family.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review and email. I'm so glad you all had a wonderful family get-together, especially for those of you who are keen on wildlife. The area is superb for bird watching and you were very lucky to spot a pair of long eared owls at Dungeness. I hope you all had a safe journey home. With best wishes, Jane

The Perfect Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in December for my partners birthday and it was surprise trip for him and needless to say he was thrilled! This place is great, you instantly feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. The addition of a lovely Christmas tree really was a great touch. The cottage is stocked with everything you would need, it was clean and fresh too.

The nature reserve was just beautiful, we went for a walk on quite a misty day and it just added to the incredible landscape, I suggest taking some binoculars to spot some of the incredible birds.

Jane the owner has been nothing but helpful and I recommended you read the welcome pack and definitely take a quick friendly taxi ride in to Rye and have a few drinks and dinner, The Grill at the George was lovely, as was The Mermaid Inn!

We will be back for more :)

Beautifully decorated, clean, bright home

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was ideal and we loved the location. The attention to detail was impressive! Close to the beach and close to a bus service into Rye. A pub within walking distance was nice at the end of a long day. Our only complaint was trying to navigate a mini van/mpv - in the narrow drive-way and parking.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. It was great to welcome you from Canada! The private parking area can be a little tight, but is definitely doable in a number of moves (great for practising those 3 point tuns!). The upside of the parking area is that it's tucked away from the road, making it extra peaceful and safer for guests with young children or dogs. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the UK. With best wishes, Jane

property internally was superb parking for 2 cars was problematical but not an issue.

The cottage was ideal for the 4 adults and 2 year old. The kitchen was well stocked only fault was the tin opener did not work properly. The beds were comfortable and the linen superb. The cottage is situated perfectly ( camber sands / Rye etc). The customer service from the owner was world class and could not be faulted. There were nice touches like provision of stair gate, spades for the beach, complimentary items.

Marinos fish and chips is highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words about the cottage and the service received. I like to provide as much info as possible before guests arrive, giving them time to make the most of their stay, as well as providing as much of the little essentials to save on packing. Thank you also for your feedback re the tin opener. I rely on guest feedback to ensure that everything is in good working order so I will make sure that the tin opener is now replaced. Thank you for your booking! Best wishes, Jane

We had a great holiday staying at Seakale.

The cottage is just lovely and tastefully done and so well equipped we found everything we could possibly want.

Beds are so comfortable and lovely fluffy towels in bathroom made it so homely.

Appreciated the cake and provisions to make a cuppa when we arrived.

Will recommend Seakale to friends and family.
