Cottage in Church Brough, South East Cumbria/Southern Lakes, Cumbria, England - Located on a tranquil Bridleway. Cosy and warm, ideal for both long and short breaks all year round. Minimum stay three nights.

The cottage formed part of what was the Church Brough Rectory estate. The rectory, servants' quarters, stables, coach house and barn were privately acquired and converted into four separate properties. The coach house and stables are linked by an enclosed glass hall with separate internal access to both buildings.

Located on a bridleway, turning left or right out of the cottage, you can take the newly waymarked Wainwright Pennine Journey route - see OS Explorer Map OL19 ref 14 79, Grid reference NY 79253 13895. The bridleway takes you onto a little used lane/Roman road with its metamorphic sandstone sides leading north to the village green and Brough Castle and south west to Great Musgrave.

Brough lies at the foot of the Stainmore Pass that crosses the Pennines. The Romans built a military road from York to Carlisle and a chain of forts, one of which was Verterae in Church Brough. A 1,000 years later the Normans built a castle on the same site.

Over the years the castle was destroyed, rebuilt, burned down and in the 17th century once again restored that time by Lady Anne Clifford. A 100 mile pathway that follows the route Lady Anne Clifford took to visit her many castles from Skipton, passes through Church Brough going on to Penrith.

Market Brough, the part of the village on the northern side of the A66, was an important centre of trade from 1330 when a charter for a weekly market was granted.

The Vale of Eden is a popular area for walking, with the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast route, Hadrian’s Wall - easily reached by road and now, more recently, Wainwright’s Pennine Journey route which passes the cottage.

An extensive network of footpaths and bridleways crisscrossing the local countryside is easily accessible from the cottage. Walkers are most welcome.

Popular too with cyclists, the Cycle Route 71 can be joined west at Great Musgrave or east at Barras, both close to Church Brough. See OS Landranger Map 91 for detail.

Lovely place to stay

The Coach House is a great place to stay and relax after being out and about in the local and not so local countryside. We used this as a base to visited the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales and it was great to get back and chill out there. The kitchen is well appointed, the wall mounted tv easy to watch from the couch (and the chairs comfortable to read in !) and the super kingsize bed made sleeping soooo easy. We received loads of info before arrival and this was supported by more maps and leaflets in the 'house'. We were greeted by Val who showed us around when we got there and she and John are very welcoming and hospitable hosts. We wished we could have stayed longer !

A beautifully appointed accommodation

The Coach House is appropriate for a couple who are looking for a well appointed accommodation which is comfortable, clean and has character. Church Brough in which the Coach House is situated is friendly and small. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. It is essential to have a car to explore the surrounding areas, although a highlight of our stay was to take the vintage bus to Barnard Castle and back.

We come away refreshed and relaxed although our stay was short. But we look forward to coming back

Owner's Response: On your next visit you might like to take the vintage coach to Hawes, a little market town 20 miles away in the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park. First recorded as a market place in 1307 Hawes has a lively Tuesday market. The Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese centre is well worth a visit as is the 18th Century water-powered cotton spinning at Gayle Mill. Thanks for being such considerate guests, it was a pleasure to have you stay in the cottage.

5 * A Beautiful Cottage with a Hotel feel

Beautifully clean. Excellent customer service by John and Val, it was so nice to receive lots of information prior to our arrival. I would highly recommend this property to friends. Coach House Cottage has the feel of a quality hotel with bath robes, chocolates, fresh fruit, milk and wine. The kitchen is well equipped. The supper king sized bed is very comfortable. We have stayed in many cottages in the UK, we are happy to say that this is one of the best in which we have stayed. Next time, we will be sure to stay longer. Many Thanks John and Val.

Nice surprising find

We were very impressed with Val and John who made us very welcome on our arrival. Val showed us round the Coach House which was excellent, very clean,comfortable and relaxing. The setting was lovely with the old castle out the back of it. Val also told us of lots of local walks so we didn't need to drive everywhere.

Thrte were plenty of local brochures listing various places to visit in case the weather should be too wet for walking .

We would definitely recommend to others , and would go back it is certainly 5 Star.

Lovely stay

We stayed at the coach house for 4 nights and just loved it. It was a nice rural location with a castle ruins right beside it. The house had great amenities including a large flat screen TV and a large comfortable bed upstairs. There was a nice garden we could sit at and help ours to any of the herbs. Valerie and John made us feel very welcome and even provided a bottle of vine for us. Couldn't say enough good things about our stay there. Its a beautiful part of England and close to a lot of interesting sightseeing including the lake district and Hadrian wall.

John has always loved Cumbria for its natural beauty and enjoyed many walking holidays. Church Brough is central to the Lake District, North Pennines, Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, all his favourites. Brough can be reached from either the east via the A1M, or west on the M6 - Junction 38 or 37.

Coast/Beach:

Arnside on Morecambe Bay is about 39 miles, via the A685 and M6. Sailing and other water sports are available on several lakes in the Lake District.

Travel:

Nearest airport is Newcastle, 132 km/82 miles - about 1 hour 29 mins by road.

Manchester airport is 104 miles away.

Use of car/hire car is essential.

Nearest railway station is Kirkby Stephen on the Settle Carlisle railway accessed at Leeds via the Kings Cross line. The Euston line runs direct to Kendal and Carlisle, and Oxenholme for the Lake District.

Distances:

Church Brough village is a 3 minute walk away, to reach Brough allow 15 minutes. By road Appleby takes 15 minutes, Penrith 30 minutes. Kirkby Stephen, on the Coast to Coast route, about 4 miles away has a supermarket, banks with cash machines, petrol stations, takeaways, tea rooms, Visitor Centre. The Settle Carlisle railway line is south of Kirkby Stephen. The old Kirkby Stephen station houses a railway museum and rolling stock. Further Details:

A walk to Brough will take you to the recently refurbished hotel, The Inn at Brough, The Golden Fleece pub is close by and Swanson House is a fully licensed top quality restaurant. The village shops include a convenience store with an off licence, a fish and chip shop open from 5 pm W-Sat, a cafe and a flower shop. The farmers' market is held every third Saturday of each month.

In an area crisscrossed with footpaths the little known and unspoilt South Stainmore area, said to have a greater number of footpaths per square kilometre than anywhere else in Britain, is easily reached from the cottage on foot! We have a bank of information sheets giving details of local walks for you to choose from. We can provide lifts to and from start/finish points.

You could go on to explore the Northern Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, some 650 square miles in the highest and most northerly part of the Pennine hills with a history of mining, even gold! Other historic sites in the area include Shap Abbey, Brougham Castle, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, Pendragon Castle. Hadrian's Wall is about an hour's drive. An area well known for its waterfalls one is particularly notable, High Force and Low Force, some 20 miles from the cottage via Middleton in Teesdale - a quaint town that has hardly developed over the years - located on the Pennine Way.

After a hard day walking or cycling in the fells, the cottage provides a place to relax with its comfortable sitting area, tasteful soft furnishings and comprehensive central heating. The power shower provides instant hot water. The bedroom has a light airy feel with original beams, high ceiling and triple aspect. The kitchen provides facilities for all kinds of meal preparation, from haute cuisine to microwave ready meals. For those days you really don't want to 'do it yourself' we can provide a breakfast menu, served in the cottage.
