The cottage lies in a hamlet near Trencrom Hill, in the narrowest neck of land between St Ives and Penzance in the West Penwith area of Cornwall. Situated on a very quiet lane - it is extremely peaceful even at peak holiday times. West Penwith, which stretches to Land's End, is wilder than the lusher sheltered estuaries of Helford and the Fal to the east; it is scattered with pre-historic monuments and settlements, and has a more recent history of tin mining and fishing. 1 Polpeor Row was converted from two miners' cottages into one, and has been owned by our family since 1962. Little has been done to the original structure and many of the internal walls are bare or whitewashed granite or the original wooden partitions. The cottage is simply but comfortably furnished for five, with some antiques, and local paintings and pottery. Our cottage makes a marvellous base from which to explore the area, whether you want peace and quiet, family seaside beaches, bracing moors and cliffs with prehistoric settlements, gardens and National Trust properties, surfing, sailing, looking for wildlife, eating local produce or visiting superb visitor attractions.

About the Owner

Tin Miners' Cottage is owned by Penny and her sister and managed by Penny. We both live in East Anglia - Penny works for one of the Cambridge colleges and her sister teaches in Norwich. We have both been holidaying at our cottage since our parents bought it in 1962: one of Penny's earliest memories is climbing in and out of the window on the first visit as the agent had mistakenly sent the keys to our home address. Now our sons (three between us) have grown up with the cottage too, and we hope will one day take it over from us: Penny's elder son had his first solo visit with friends in 2013.

Our parents originally chose this property because they loved the very quiet location yet easy access to so many places, and the simplicity of the place. At the time they were keen, rather intrepid, scuba divers but we grew up having many idyllic family beach holidays. Later they bought a boat and there were more sailing related holidays; Penny's family continued this tradition by towing sailing boats to Cornwall for many years.

Coast/Beach:

There are numerous beautiful beaches in every direction in West Penwith. From the cottage it is around 15 minutes by car to Hayle and Lelant ('3 miles of golden sand') and to Carbis Bay, 15 to St Ives, 20 minutes to Penzance and 30-40 minutes to the numerous beaches near Land's End, on the Lizard, on the North Cornwall Coast and around Truro and Falmouth.

Travel:

About 50 minutes from Newquay airport. About 3 miles from St Erth railway station (on mainline from London) and 6 miles from Penzance station. Unless you bring bicycles and are VERY active, a car is essential.

Distances:

About 3 miles from Hayle (sandy beaches and Paradise Bird Park), 5 from St Ives (beaches, quaint cobbled streets, Tate Gallery, Hepworth and Leach museums), 6 from Penzance and Newlyn (bustling harbours) and St Michael's Mount. Land's End is about 15 miles away to the west, with the Minack clifftop theatre on the way (check programme and book online!). The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are about an hour away by car.

Further Details:

Southern Cornwall is a wonderful family holiday area. There are dozens of beautiful beaches and coves, linked by the long-distance coastal footpath for the more energetic. There are lots of opportunities for bucket-and-spade activities with sandcastles, rock pools and paddling, or more active options with surfing, sailing, kite boarding, snorkelling, scuba-diving or fishing. The area has wonderful bird life (including in the garden!) and is very close to the RSPB reserves at Hayle Estuary and at Marazion. There are good facilities nearby for horse riding and trekking, and golf. You can visit the nearby Scilly Isles by ship or plane, passing the dramatic scenery of Land's End. The lanes around the cottage are lovely for walking, full of wild flowers, and from the top of the nearby Trencrom Hill (National Trust, but free access) you get a magnificent view of both coasts (also great for kite flying and hide-and-seek).

South Cornwall is famous for its mild climate and sub-tropical gardens, and there are numerous famous gardens (including Heligan) within easy reach, as well as the Eden Project. There are several attractive National Trust properties, including St Michael's Mount, nearby, and we are close to the cliff-top open air Minack Theatre (book online before you go). In case of poor weather, there are numerous 'tourist attractions' for visitors - Flambards Theme Park, Goonhilly Earth Station, Land's End, the Seal Sanctuary, mining and telegraph museums and very many more. The cottage is 15 minutes from St Ives, Carbis Bay and Hayle to the north, with miles of sandy beaches, Tate and Hepworth Galleries as well as numerous art and pottery galleries, and about 20 minutes from Penzance and the Lizard peninsula to the south, with lots of attractive fishing harbours and coves.

From the Owner

For us this place is a family home, imprinted on all of us. Although we repair and update it with time, it is important to us that the cottage retains as much of its original simplicity as possible, whilst still being very comfortable and having everything that you need for a great holiday. Nowadays Cornwall has the added attraction of great food - some excellent restaurants specialising in local produce, great farm shops, and of course the irresistible (if calorie-laden) Cornish pasties, cream teas and fish and chips. We never manage to visit all our favourite haunts in one trip and each time drive back up the A30 lamenting what we didn't get around to this time!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The stairs are very steep and not suitable for people with mobility difficulties. Toddlers would also need supervision. Our cottage retains its original structure, and the ceilings of the ground floor are the underside of the upstairs floor boards, whilst the single and twin rooms are separated only by a wooden partition - sound insulation is not particularly impressive and encourages a peaceful lifestyle! For this reason the cottage is suitable for families or one or two couples, but groups of friends might find it lacks privacy. The outer walls of the cottage are built from granite - if you are used to living in a modern house you may notice a slight damp feeling on arrival if the cottage has been unoccupied - this should clear quickly with ventilation. The thick walls do ensure that the cottage stays beautifully cool in hot weather.
