Refurbished, Spacious, Stylish, Well Equipped Family Holiday Cottage - Sleeps 12

Overview

Property

Updated: 21-Nov-2016
Spacious 5 bed, 3 bath, 2 reception roomed cottage in beautiful countryside near the stunning coast of South Devon.

Newly refurbished Oak is one of the cottages that make up Buckland Court - it is a deceptively large holiday home constructed from original farm buildings using local skills and materials. It sleeps up to 12 in 5 bedrooms (2 king, 1 linkable twin + sprung chair bed, 1 twin, 1 double with single bunk over) with 3 newly refurbished bath/shower rooms + basins in two bedrooms, 2 receptions (one with pool/table tennis table), a large very well equipped kitchen/diner, parking and beautiful communal garden.

The cottage is situated in the rolling countryside of the beautiful South Hams area of South Devon just 10 minutes drive from the stunning Devon coast. Oak offers newly refurbished (2015) stylish, comfortable self catering accommodation for up to 12 people and is an ideal venue for family or friends to get together, with plenty of room to spread out and relax - whatever you want to do. The living space is generous and made up of an L shaped lounge with ample comfortable seating, table and chairs for card/board games and a TV area with flat screen free view TV, and Playstation 3. A second reception area has comfortable seating, a smart TV, Ipod dock and a 6 foot games table for snooker and table tennis. The kitchen is newly refurbished and offers a large modern, fully equipped kitchen with everything you need including a dining area that will seat up to 14. The house is centrally heated with radiators in all rooms and comes with free wifi/internet access. Outside there is teak outdoor furniture. There is parking for 2 cars in the courtyard and overflow parking behind the nearby stable block. The lush communal gardens, accessible from the adjacent courtyard, amount to 1. 5 acres and include brick BBQ, picnic tables, areas for playing games, childrens playhouse and swings, ponds/water features and a wealth of wildlife all surrounded by lovely countryside. The caretaker Simon also breeds barn owls and is happy to show these to visitors, they are proving quite an attraction! Oak Cottage is perfectly situated to make the most of the beautiful South Hams countryside and stunning South Devon coast and beaches. There are walks to suit everyone along the coastal path or inland through woods, fields and of course the Dartmoor National Park is not far away. The towns of Dartmouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are within easy reach. There are lovely pubs, restaurants, galleries and shops galore. River trips, steam train outings, water sports, sailing, golf, tennis, fishing, crabbing, horse riding - and if you have any energy left there are several child friendly activity parks in the area! The cottage also comes with 25% reduction in fees for the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club - 10 minutes away.

Unfortunately Oak Cottage is not suitable for STAG or HEN parties or groups of school leavers due to the close proximity of other holiday cottages.

About the Owner

My sister and I are the owners of Oak Cottage. We are from London, have four boys and two girls between us and family and friends all over the country. We wanted to find a place we could all get together for great family holidays.

We bought in a beautiful area with lots to offer so that extended family and friends could get together whenever we wanted in a comfortable, well equipped house that was everything we wanted from our 'home from home'.

We have had 16 years of brilliant times at Oak Cottage with loads of wonderful memories. We use it a little less now the kids are older (we now tend to come for shorter breaks with family/friends and my sister has actually moved to Devon) which is why we are renting it out.

We want it to be well used and enjoyed as it should be - which seems to be the case judging by the reviews!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had one of the best family holidays we have ever had here. With nine of us staying at the cottage we needed to have space to split up at times, and be able to all get together at times. The cottage had the right space to allow this and there was plenty to do to keep all the children happy. It was in just the right location for easy access to all that the South Hams has to offer."

Mr J Halls

"Oak Cottage is excellent for large parties. There were 11 of us, with ages ranging from 3 to 84 and the layout is such that we never felt that we were on top of each other. The games table was a hit with the teenagers, especially when the weather wasn't very good and the dogs enjoyed walks in the grounds. The house is very well equipped with just about everything you need and more besides. I would have no hesitation in recommending Oak Cottage especially for large mixed groups". Mrs M Jones

Excellent property for a large family group.

  • 5 of 5

Spacious, clean, very well equipped, super new kitchen, warm and cosy, modern bathrooms. Handy having Simon nearby for any questions and local advice. Location ideal for easy access to many beaches in this lovely part of South Devon. We were a party of 8 including two little children and a dog and this property was just what we wanted for our October week away.

Owner's Response: Thank you David for your comments - the refurbishment of the house in 2015 has really been appreciated by all our guests since then and I am glad the space and facilities worked well for your 3 generations. As you rightly point out it is a huge bonus for us and our guests to have Simon (the caretaker) on hand as he is an expert in everything to do with the local area. We do hope we can welcome you and the family back again sometime. With kind regards, Jude.

Oak Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We arrived early at the cottage but as it had already been prepared we were quickly given entry and were delighted with all first impressions. With 3 families travelling from 3 different areas it was great to have immediate access and be able to sort bedrooms, get unpacked and get the holiday started. The week progressed from there; the garden was great for the kids to run and let off steam after their journeys, the well equipped kitchen proved an immediate hit with the ladies (I know this sounds a bit sexist but it was a hit) and the bedroom provision for ten of us, 6 agults and 4 children was more than adequate.

With glorious weather all week this was a great start and the week progressed from here and my birthday celebration (on the Thursday), the original purpose for the week, was very memorable for all the right reasons.

Brilliant accommodation.

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation was brilliant. All you could need for 12 people. A newly fitted modern kitchen with all the equipment you could need. Games room far bigger than it looks on the photos. Grounds are brilliant, very relaxing place to make a great holiday. Close to Saxton and the beach. Recommended for a large group or family with plenty of space so you are not on top of each other. Thank you for a great stay in a wonderful place.

Outstanding cottage with beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

Everything about oak cottage was outstanding. Plenty of space for everything and everyone... there was 11 of us!

Children, aged 6 up to 16, had so much to do! They loved the gardens, played pool, tried to play table tennis and most importantly were safe wherever they explored within the grounds of the cottages.

The bedrooms were a fantastic size, beautifully decorated with plenty of storage. The 3 main bathrooms, including the en suite, were used excessively every day by everyone and there was never a shortage of hot water!

The kitchen was my favourite room in the whole cottage. Absolutely stunning with so much space and every utensil you could possibly wish for! I wanted to take it home with me!

I would highly recommend this cottage to large families or groups of friends who simply want to relax, enjoy the Devon countryside and explore the beautiful hidden beaches along the tiny coastal roads. There is something for everyone, young or old, and it will make you smile from the moment you arrive.... It was extremely sad to leave.

It was a lovely, sunny, summer holiday enjoyed by my entire family.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for a brilliant review Jo - it is just the reaction we hope to get from our guests! We are delighted that you really loved the cottage and were sad to leave - sounds like you really made the most of what is provided both inside and outside the cottage in the gardens and playhouse. I know you had lovely weather which helps but whatever the weather it is just a beautiful part of the country with lots on offer. We really look forward to welcoming you and your smiles back sometime soon! With very best wishes, Jude.

Superb cottage for a celebratory family holiday.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a splendid week at Oak Cottage with all the family celebrating our Ruby Wedding (3 couples and 2 toddlers). The cottage exceeded our expectations - spacious, and extremely well equipped. It has been thoughtfully refurbished, well maintained and cleaned.

The caretaker was always on hand and very helpful, looking after us well.

Even though the weather was mixed the area is lovely with plenty for everyone to enjoy and explore - beaches, boats, steam train, zoo, walks and towns and villages to visit.

We found a good choice of pubs, restaurants and takeaways within a 25 minute radius.

We highly recommend this property and would certainly revisit ourselves.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Sue and Terry for taking the trouble to leave a great review of your stay at Oak Cottage, we are very pleased that the house 'exceeded expectations' - just the reaction we hope for and usually get! We are delighted that you were able to celebrate your Ruby Wedding anniversary with the family in our cottage and that it worked well for all your party - we do have quite a lot of family celebrations there and it is lovely to think that people will think fondly of Oak when they look back at those special occasions. We very much hope to welcome you back again sometime in the future. With kindest regards, Jude.

Oak cottage is amazing.

  • 5 of 5

Oak cottage was everything and more that anyone could possibly require for a holiday/ short break. So well equipped. Everything had been thought of. So much room for the 11 of us and such a peaceful and quiet setting.

We will definitely be recommending it to family and friends and hope to return again one day.

Location

From the Owner

Living in London we really wanted somewhere to get away to that was completely different from our everyday surroundings and that we could set up exactly the way we wanted. We had holidayed in this part of the country and loved it - the South Hams area of Devon has beautiful unspoilt English countryside with narrow lanes, high hedges, green fields, quaint villages and you are never far from the stunning coastline and beaches that we love. There are fabulous views, good walking, lovely beaches, golf courses (we are keen golfers), numerous other activities, good pubs and restaurants. Something for everyone whatever the time of year and all in a lovely 'away from it all' setting! We loved this house because of the space and flexibility it offered - 5 bedrooms but also loads of living and entertaining space - it never feels full even with 12 of us there!

Facilities

From the Owner

Oak Cottage is in a quiet rural setting with other converted cottages. The cottage is very spacious and well equipped and the beautiful 1.5 acre communal garden is there to be enjoyed by everyone complete with brick built BBQ and picnic tables. The games area at the cottage is very popular and there is plenty of other space to spread out and relax. The large kitchen with table and seating for 14 is the hub of the house. We have a great on-site caretaker, Simon, who will help you settle in - he is a font of local knowledge and only too pleased to help and advise. He also breeds Barn Owls and these prove a very popular attraction, the children in particular love to feed them! While you do need a car you are never far from stunning beaches, fabulous walking, golf, shops, pubs and restaurants and there are plenty of other activities on offer.
