About Vicky Saumarez

The house has been owned by Richard and his family for many years and they spend many weeks at the property every year.

Because the farmhouse has been used as a second home, it is well equipped and comfortable for all the guests.

Vicky Saumarez purchased this farmhouse in 1980

Why Vicky Saumarez chose Charente

The house is wonderfully peaceful and remote. Silent apart from the crickets and cattle. A great place to relax with the family and forget the worries of the world.

A lovely property with a few minor issues

  • 4 of 5

We very much liked the location and privacy of the property. The pool was a very positive feature, although we had some issues with 'George' who caused an injury to someone's foot. The inside is reasonably well-equipped, although there is no dishwasher as advertised on the website.

The website also makes no mention of the charge for linen and towels, €50 for us, €150 for 6 people staying for two weeks. This should be included in the rental.

The property is advertised as having good disabled access and in general this is true. There is a very steep step to the pool area which could easily be dealt with by adding another step. There is also a lack of comfortable outdoor seating. One of the two picnic benches could be replaced by a table and chairs. One of our party cut their finger badly on a piece of glass trapped in one of the tables.

The paperwork at the property is minimal and outdated. It implies that departing guests should clean the property to an extent that most would consider unreasonable. There are no instructions about the location of the spare gas bottle, although one is provided. However the couple who care for the property are pleasant and helpful. A good level of conversational French is needed to communicate with them.

These comments are made to help the owner. We enjoyed our stay and the points made were irritating rather than major issues.

Owner's Response: We're glad you and your family enjoyed your stay and in answer to your points: We believe our lovely caretaker Serge managed the repair with 'George' very quickly despite the language barrier (We do warn everyone that Serge speaks not a word of English and Anne-Marie is enthusiastic but her vocabulary is of course a bit limited.) It is regrettable that one of your group received a cut. We specifically ask that no glass is taken to the pool area just for that reason. The website description does not state there is a dishwasher, and it does state that we charge for linens but it obviously is not marked clearly enough on the Owners Direct system. We will try to make it more visible. Thanks for pointing that out. Although wheelchair users have comfortably used the house in the past, your comments about the step is a good one and we will consider a putting in a ramp for future use. We are somewhat dismayed that you thought outdoor seating was inadequate as there are bags of chairs and loungers and this has never been an issue with previous guests. We will certainly check them over. Paperwork in the house will be updated. Thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again!

A wonderful place for a relaxing holiday - highly recommended. All in good working order - house, barn, pool & barbeque(s). Closer to shops than imagined; with a local bakery in Condeon village, and Barbezieux shops/hypermarkets etc are but 10 mins by car. Bordeaux about 1 hour on rapid A10. Extensive twice a week markets such as one does not see in Britain any more. A relaxing time had by all and a welcome change of pace. Three good sized double bedrooms, one en suite. Lovely sitting room with beams etc. Very cosy indeed. All overlooked by a herd of sweet Charolais cattle in the surrounding fields. Heaven on Earth or as likely as one can get to it! Highly recommended for parents and children alike.
