An attractive, 200 year old stone townhouse restored with many original features, such as painted wooden beams throughout the house, wooden shutters and 60cm thick stone walls. There are comfortable sofas in the living room, which has a traditional fireplace with a woodburner and a separate kitchen with a dining area for 6. Both rooms open onto the patio where you can enjoy meals under the pergola looking on to the charming garden with a lawn, fruit trees, scented Mediterranean flowers and herbs and sun terrace. The house backs onto open space and is situated in a quiet, friendly street in a traffic-free location, making it perfect for children. It is very close to Stari Grad's charming main square, perfect for an evening stroll. All the attractions and heritage of this UNESCO protected small town are very close: restaurants, cafe bars, the small marina, supermarkets, small shops and the open air cinema. Yet the house is only 1 minute's walk to the sea and a pleasant 10 minute stroll to the nearest beach along the seafront. It is a beautiful location for a family seaside holiday, with a stroll along the seafront in the evening for a glass of local wine, a delicious meal or an icecream. We have spent many happy summers here as a family and would love you to enjoy it too.

We now live in the UK but have been lucky enough to have spent a lot of time in Croatia over the past 10 years. We really miss the blue skies and sea views that are so part of everyday life in Stari Grad and can't wait to be able to spend more time there again. We also miss being part of the small community of people that live in Stari Grad, whose lifestyle is relaxed and social. There is always time for a coffee in Stari Grad.

Thank you so much for our holiday. Stari Grad is an excellent choice for a relaxing break in a beautiful harbour setting. With 3 teenage children, we all enjoyed trying the different beaches and restaurants every day and we were never disappointed.We hired little boats and took a longer sea trip to Brac seeing dolphins on the way. We visited Hvar town and attractive surrounding villages which we found easily accessible by local buses.Your house and garden were a lovely haven - authentic with ample room and and very well maintained by the local people.

Old and modern nestle side by side
Loved this house with its old, beautifully pointed stone walls and wonderful secluded garden. It has a terrace outside the main bedroom too. Inside it's very clean and simply decorated with big comfy sofas in the living room. Well equipped kitchen, wifi, great shower and lots of books and toys for kids. It's only a short walk into town and a 10 minute walk to Laterna beach/lido where all the local people go to chill out and is a good place to swim. Even better place to swim is right across the bay which gets the sun in the afternoon and early evening. It's easy to hire bikes; highly recommend a cycle ride across the Stari Grad plain to Vrboska approx 7km. Also easy to get around by local bus. We took a trip to Hvar Town which only takes half an hour and hired kayaks to paddle round the stunningly beautiful Paklini islands and visit the fort. After that we couldn't wait to get back to our little house in Stari Grad which is a nicer, less costly and more chilled out place. The owner Wendy is really helpful too and recommended a couple of great restaurants including EREMITAZ, our personal favourite. Had fantastic chilled out holiday and would definitely go back again. Couldn't recommend more!

Everything you need is there, easy to live in, great position as 2 minutes walk from the water front, but back enough in town to be peaceful . Looks beautiful too.
A wonderful town house in a quieter corner of Hvar
We spent a week in this property during August and it's a perfect base to stay in the small, but vibrant little port of Stari Grad.
The old town house that Wendy has renovated is stylish, spacious, very comfortable and a relaxing retreat after a day in the sun, before heading out to the town in the evening to enjoy the restaurants and cafes. We couldn't have hoped for a more relaxing and comfortable place to stay - it just oozes charm and understated style.
Ample room for four and the benefit of three bedrooms was a real bonus with two teenagers needing their own space. All the amenities one would need are provided (fast wi-fi, TV, washing machine/dishwasher etc and the air-con in the upstairs rooms was much appreciated in the heat of summer)
And then there is the garden, which is a sanctuary to enjoy at any time of the day, packed full of Mediterranean plants and fruit trees and a vine overhanging the seating area. You are in a residential area so there is a bit of noise from the street and the campsite, but nothing excessive and just locals and the odd tourist going about their business. So despite its position, we all found the house very tranquil and quiet.
The house is set in the old part of town in a narrow residential street - a short stroll to the cafes and shops, so easy to pop to the bakery in the morning or to one of the many excellent restaurants in the evening.
Stari Grad is a friendly lovely town and great fun just to stroll along the promenade or sit in a cafe watching the world go by and the big yachts in the harbour. The seafront in undergoing a major makeover on the opposite side of the harbour, so it's nice to stroll around the bay, where there is a lovely quiet bay beyond the two big hotels that survive from the communist era and approached through a path through pine trees!
There are bakeries, markets and supermarkets and you can rent boats or cars if you want to explore further (there are a couple of great restaurants in the village of Dol in the hills above Stari Grad – the Konoba Kokot and the Santa Maria, which are both worth a visit at the very least – the traditional ‘peka’ a must!).
We cannot recommend Wendy's house and Stari Grad as a destination enough. Wendy was a wealth of information prior to our stay, always responding quickly and comprehensively.
Well-situated, well-kept house, beautiful garden
My wife, mother-in-law, son, nephew and I had a wonderful three week stay at Wendy's old stone house in Stari Grad. It's ideally located a few minutes' walk from the centre of the old town, and is only yards from the waterfront and the promenade that goes past the town's main beaches. Wendy was very friendly, and provided for everything we needed - everyone seems to know and love her in the town! - and the house itself is clean and well kept, and has everything in terms of kitchen, cleaning, etc. facilities that you would need, even for a longer stay. Without a doubt the best thing about the house is its typical Mediterranean garden, which has a traditional Dalmatian barbecue/grill/chimney, shaded seating area, lawn, flowers, trees, etc. The two boys (18 months and 3.5 years) had space to run around, and there was all the room we needed for lunches outside, barbecues, paddling pool, and reading quietly in the shade. A place we loved calling home for three weeks, this is a really peaceful, charming and convenient place to stay.

“We knew that this stone house in its island setting away from crowds and congestion, would be a lovely holiday home. Stari Grad is a small town that offers a slow pace of life under blue skies with palm trees, restaurants serving delicious food, beaches and a great beach bar. It is popular with Croatian and visitors too and is known as one of the more glamorous islands to spend a summer holiday. You can either relax and do absolutely nothing, or use the house as a base to explore the island as it's quite centrally located. Here, you are never far from a beach and the island is remarkably unspoilt and peaceful. Stari Grad means 'the old town' and now has UNESCO protection owing to its long history of continuous inhabitation, from 385BC to the present day, making it one of the oldest towns in Europe. We think it is a very special place and like many others return here year after year.”
Activity and Interests
The house is an easy 10 minute stroll to the nearest beach with beach bar along the lovely, traffic-free promenade with its new yacht marina. There are also many beautiful, pebbled coves and beaches less than 15 minutes drive away, or you can rent a boat to head out and explore the hidden coves of the Stari Grad bay.
The nearest airport is Split and then a 2 hour ferry journey to Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. From the port there are shuttle buses that meet each ferry for the 10 minute drive into Stari Grad town centre. Car hire is not necessary as there are buses/rental bikes on the island.
The island of Hvar is famous for its picturesque blue coves set amidst the rolling hills, planted with pine trees, olive groves, vines and lavender. All this is on our doorstep, along with the UNESCO protected Stari Grad Plain and the quiet, stone-built inland villages all a 10 minute drive away or accessible by bike/on foot to enjoy the clean, fresh air. The house is 27km to Hvar town with its world famous jet set night-life, super yachts, and Venetian architecture.
The house is situated in a no-through street in the centre of the town and offers a real Croatian island experience. You can relax and enjoy a simple outdoor Mediterranean life with lots of sunshine. All amenities such as supermarkets, restaurants, local shops, cafes, bars, museums, cash machines, children's play area, outdoor cinema, rental bike/boat/car just a short walk away. Paid daily/weekly parking 1 minute away is also available. Stari Grad is a small, bustling fishing town with several beaches and great hospitality, making it an idyllic summer holiday location. It is a traditional stone built town proud of its history, being one of the oldest towns in Europe and this year in 2016 is to celebrate its 2,400th birthday. The Ancient Greeks settled here due to its safe harbour and fertile fields in 385/6 B.C. It is surrounded by small olive groves and fields, which were once cultivated by the Ancient Greeks settlers, making the house an ideal base for walking or cycling, and of course enjoying the fabulous historic setting. Or you can simply enjoy sitting in the shade, sampling the local wine, ice cream or coffee and watch the world go by.

“The house is made of stone and so stays that bit cooler in the summer months. The garden provides a lot of space outside the house and has many Mediterranean herbs you can pick and use for meals outside on the traditional Dalmatian BBQ. We love going out in the evening to the local bars and restaurants. It is less than 2 minutes walk to the main square, where people gather in the cool of the evening. We love going to the bakers in the morning too and stopping off for coffee on the way home. 2016 is a special year for the town because it will be celebrating its 2,400th Birthday. There will be lots of celebrations over the year to mark the event, so it is a good year to come and visit this very special Dalmatian town.”

- Notes on accommodation: Please note that bedrooms 2 and 3 are located on the 2nd floor with sloping ceilings - 2 m at highest. However, there is aircon in the room with the small double bed, which cools the whole 2nd floor. A travel cot and high-chair are available. Outside: The garden is a lovely feature of this house, with fruit and olive trees, a small lawn, Mediterranean flowers and herbs, a large traditional Croatian BBQ with a chimney and a fun outdoor shower. There is a seating area under the pergola, covered in a grape vine, roses and jasmine outside the patio doors to the living room and kitchen. It's perfect for dinner outside in the evening. There are steps leading up to the balcony and terrace with a further seating area, which leads to the first floor landing and main bedroom. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer, iron Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: One towel is included per guest. Also beach towels are in the house. Weekly cleaning and towel, linen change is included but further mid-week cleaning is also available. Other: First floor landing room leading to the balcony with a ceiling fan and small book collection. There is also a trunk of toys for young children.
