About Kate Cushing

Owl Cottage is the personal holiday home of Kate and Kieran and their children Hannah & Harry. They have lived in the North East of England in Newcastle for over 20 years and enjoy busy lives working in medicine and music education. Owl Cottage is their sanctuary. “We have always loved heading up along the Northumberland coast for days out. So we almost have to pinch ourselves to believe that we now so fortunate to have Owl Cottage and can enjoy even more of such a special place!”

"We very much enjoy living in Newcastle, but Northumberland for us is a very special place and is where we love to be! Our two children are fiddle players in the Northumbrian Ranters who perform all over Northumberland which gives us the opportunity to visit new places in the county when we go to hear them play wonderful folk music inspired by the people & places of Northumberland"

Why Kate Cushing chose Craster

“We have always loved heading up along the Northumberland coast for days out. We love visiting the National Trust properties, Alnwick gardens, Barter Books, Holy Island and our favourite beach at Embleton Bay for a picnic and a paddle in the sea before perhaps a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle or a stop off at a local pub for some real ale and wonderful fresh seafood. So we almost have to pinch ourselves to believe that we now so fortunate to have Owl Cottage and can enjoy even more of such a special place!”

What makes this cottage unique

We have enjoyed making Owl Cottage our own & have had great fun pottering around in the vegetable & fruit patch, playing games in the garden, having barbeques, watching the lambs in the fields, walking & cycling to the beach, messing around in the sand dunes and exploring the rock pools. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the sun is shining or it’s rainy, it’s still a great place to escape to. One of our favourite things is to light the fire and cosy up with a good book (over 1000 books to read) and enjoy time together away from all the hustle & bustle of everyday life. Although you feel away from it all, there are pubs, cafes & shops within easy reach and if you need to be in contact with the outside world Owl Cottage has free wi-fi and free landline telephone calls to UK.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Heavenly… a sanctuary. It has been my opportunity to spend days on the beautiful beach, drive through beautiful countryside and just soak up the atmosphere of this lovely, lovely place. I'll definitely be back, either this winter, when I think I'll be cosy and warm here, and/or in the summer to spend lazy hours in the garden of the cottage, with the sound of the sheep the only noise in this peaceful place."

"An amazing few days in an amazing cottage. So peaceful and relaxing! Surrounded by beautiful countryside with every comfort provided. A wonderful way to recharge the proverbial batteries."

"We felt very much at home here. Owl Cottage is in a stunning location, it's superbly appointed - what more could you want… but to come back again… please!"

The best cottage we've ever stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

Owl Cottage is incredible. It is clear that this gem of a place is far from simply being a house or just a holiday let, it is a home. As a result, it is furnished to a very high spec, has everything you could possibly ever need and is incredibly comforting and welcoming. The location is great, enabling very easy access to the coast - both rock pools at Dunstanburgh castle and a beautiful sandy beach at Embleton. The communication from the owners was outstanding both in advance of us staying there and during - a phone call to check all was ok after our first day. The place was spotless on our arrival and the welcome basket generous in comparison to others that we have received! Although the weather was changeable, we had a fantastic break. On the couple of occasions that the rain caused us to be indoors, we had real fun with carpet boules, indoor croquet and a family jungle junior buzz tournament on the playstation! - all part and parcel of the fabulous facilities.

As for the local area, there are endless things to see and do: castle after castle, Holy Island, boat trips to see the seals, rock pooling, endless golden sandy beaches . . . .

One of our favourite things whilst we were there was watching the RNLI boat at Seahouses launch to, and return from, a routine practise. The children even got to sit in the inshore life boat and try on the kit! I would recommend you find out from the RNLI shop when these are scheduled and see it if you can.

Absolutely would not hesitate to recommend Owl Cottage. It will be our first choice for any future visits to Northumberland.

Owner's Response: Delighted that you had such an enjoyable time here at Owl Cottage and we really hope that you will come back to stay here again soon (hope next time it may be a bit sunnier!). Thank you for your lovely comments about our home and about the local area; yes the RNLI at Seahouses are fab- of course we have a personal interest because our cleaner Rachel is one of the RNLI crew! I will let her know your comments and I will ask her if she has any information we can have at Owl Cottage and/ or link from our website that would be helpful for other guests coming to stay ( Best wishes, Kate, Kieran, Hannah & Harry.

A Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5

Owl cottage is luxurious, spacious, absolutely spotless and very well maintained. It is a perfect base for cycling, walking and beach holidays. We cycled to Bamburgh Castle. We visited Dunstanburgh and Alnwick castles. We walked on the beach, in the dunes and in the fields. We visited the the great pub in Low Newton for a pint and fishcakes and ate kippers and smoked cod from the smoke house in Craster. A perfect autumn break! We would recommend Owl cottage to couples, families and adult groups.
