Traditional, Spacious, Modern Country House With Picturesque Views, Gold Award

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
4 Star Highly Commended Gold Award very large property, Beautiful location, Cairngorm National Park

Cairngorm Country Cottage is set in a stunning location, next to Cluny Castle, just outside the pretty Highland village of Newtonmore and in the very heart of the Cairngorm National Park. You’ll fall in love with the breath taking views across the Spey Valley and to the picturesque Monadhliath Mountains beyond.

The property sleeps 12 people comfortably in 5 bedrooms, plus an additional small single which adjoins the master bedroom. We also have two cots for our infant guests. We will consider bookings of 3 nights or more but usual stays are for 7 nights.

Cairngorm Country Cottage is very spacious, peaceful and luxurious making it perfect for larger groups and ideal for a family holiday or for a company training retreat. Celebrations, family reunions and gatherings, Walkers and groups of cyclists along with golfing parties are ideally suited to this generously sized, but welcoming property.

Preparing food for a large group is a joy in the very well-equipped, professionally designed and luxuriously fitted kitchen, even down to the wine cooler for that perfect dinner party. Expect to find a very well equipped kitchen with just about everything imaginable such as professional chefs knives, an amazing array of utensils, baking trays of all kinds, scales, chocolate fondue set, bread maker, coffee machine, hand whisk, blenders, slow cooker and much more. You can choose to dine in the kitchen or in the more formal dining room, both dining areas seat 12 and we have two high chairs for our younger guests.

With three large reception rooms there is scope for a little peace and quiet, to relax and enjoy a book or simply take in the views away from the rest of the party. If you are in need of some help to unwind, then try the fully programmable massage chair in the lounge, which will massage your neck back and legs to your hearts content. The large sitting room has comfortable reclining seating for 12 people and a large flat screen satellite TV and a DVD player. Both the sitting room and the more formal lounge have log burning stoves, which adds to the cosy feel of these two rooms. Floor to ceiling triple aspect windows allow you to take full advantage of the magnificent surrounding countryside.

With five good sized bedrooms, plus a small single room, and five luxurious bathrooms, every comfort is taken care of.

A very large gas BBQ is situated on the patio at the rear of the house and there is garden furniture for our guests use. You can stroll around the beautiful gardens and around the paddock, which is for the sole use of our guests. There are horses in the adjacent field to the paddock who will usually come up to the fence to check out the latest guests.

Free WIFI, two DVD players, two TV's, 3 CD players, 5 Hair Dryers, a small library of reference books, novels and children's books, some family games and children's toys and plenty of local leaflets along with local information are available for our guests.

If you prefer wildlife then you are likely to see pheasants, partridges, birds of prey, woodpeckers, ducks, an amazing array of small birds and red squirrels. All of these are seen on pretty much a daily basis from the breakfast area of the kitchen. Deer, stoats, rabbits, hares and hedgehogs are fairly frequent visitors to the garden and paddock.

We do welcome up to two well behaved dogs on arrangement with the owner and we supply dog towels, blankets, bowls and some toys but not dogs beds. There is no extra charge for dogs but we do ask that they are not permitted on to the furniture or the beds and that the local wildlife and farming stock are respected. There are lots of fabulous walks to take your dogs, plenty of places the let them off the lead and numerous places for them to swim.

About the Owner

Janet and John Grover, owners of Cairngorm Country Cottage have worked in the tourist industry for over 40 years and pride themselves in exceptional service. Their immediate family include 3 sons, their partners along with the grandchildren and they love to get together, especially if Janet (mum) is cooking. They adore animals and have several well -loved pets. John is equally at home in the kitchen but his forte is designing and building homes (all of their homes were designed and built by John). Well maintained, equipped and spotlessly clean properties are standard and they always go the extra mile to make their guests feel both welcome and at home.

They supply welcome treats for their guests which includes some of Janet's home baking and refreshments.

"As we speed South on the train back to London I wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you so much for everything over the last few days. We had an absolutely FANTASTIC time and I feel very lucky to have stumbled across your fantastic property when I was researching somewhere to stay".

Lynn September 2014

"Perfect weekend away in this beautiful house. Rooms are very large and spacious and the two separate lounges are great. Well equipped kitchen with everything you need and a lovely garden."

Katrina October 2014

"Our stay was as part of a group of ten friends who have been having a weekend away every year for almost 20 years, so we've checked out many places. This was one of the best. A beautiful house, equipped to a very high standard, with a welcome tray on arrival. The bedrooms were fantastic, and the public rooms oustanding, with a wonderful cosy feel, reclining chairs and wood burning stoves. The kitchen was also outstanding, although we ate out for two of our three nights".

Tracy November 2014

"This is a lovely luxurious house with every comfort you can imagine which gave our family of 12 a very relaxing long weekend. Our dog was welcome which was a bonus. The garden and surrounding countryside are stunning."

Christine March 2015

"This large but cosy house provided everything you could want from a holiday getaway."

Clean. Quiet. Modern and relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

Janet and John have a beautiful holiday home. Despite its rural location it's easy to find and access. The house itself is clean and a lot of space. Beautiful outdoor space too. We stayed with 10 people, lots of room to entertain but also very quiet at night - all five of the bedrooms were very private and comfortable. Modern kitchen with all nec amenities and more. Very helpful owners, changing bed setups for us too. Newton more only 10 minutes drive away for supplies. We would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Great guests. They appeared to enjoy the house and made the most of the beautiful Cairngorm National Park by cycling some of the more remote glens. We would love to welcome them back at some point.

What a find

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely holiday the accommodation was second to none. Plenty of space inside and out for the children. A lovely welcome with home made shortbread delicious. I don't know many homes that have 5 bedrooms and 4 en suites it is luxury not having to wait to get showered. Kitchen had everything you could wish for and loved sitting watching the birds and red squirrels outside. With Aviemore a few miles away there was plenty activities for all ages. We had a lovely meal at the winking owl.Although the weather was not great we had one of our best holidays and look forward to going back next year.

A beautiful house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were over the moon when we arrived at the property - it was everything we had hoped for and more! This is a beautiful house set in lovely gardens and perfectly located. Everything in the house was clean & well-maintained and Janet had kindly left us a few supplies, including some tasty home baking!

We would recommend this house to anyone wanting to treat themselves to a luxury holiday in beautiful Scotland!

We had a holiday that we will all remember for a long time.

Some Cottage!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay in a wonderful situation in a wonderful area of Scotland. The house was exactly as described and was immaculate when we arrived. The rooms are all very spacious allowing our group of 10 to get together around the dining table or around the lounge. The two lounges also allow big groups to have different places to hang out. The only thing that isn't spacious is the parking with space (just) for four cars at the front door and one at the top of the drive. The heating is via underfloor heating which gives a very pleasant even temperature all through the house. Even better was that the house was cosy all through the day for those who didn't venture far. Fuel was provided for the log burning stove but it wasn't really needed.

My dealings with the owner were very straightforward both via email before and face to face while at the house. The Good Housekeeping Deposit was returned very early the following week.

The local wildlife are very well provided for as well and you can sit and eat your breakfast whilst the red squirrels and birds including greater spotted woodpecker feast on their feeders just a few feet from the window.

We were there for Hill walking, Ski mountaineering, sightseeing, coffee shopping etc and there is plenty to do in the area or within an hours drive. The Highland Wildlife Park, an offshoot of Edinburgh Zoo, is just up the road and the new Snow Leopards and Polar Bears attracted several members of our party. There is a hotel just along the road and several more in Newtonmore that do food. We didn't eat out as each couple provide a dinner for one night but we did get a carry-out from the Indian Restaurant in Newtonmore that was very impressive and very tasty. They didn't offer banquets in their menu but a few minutes discussion with the chef yielded a good deal.

To conclude I was very pleased with the property and would certainly like to stay there again.

A wonderful, relaxing break in an idyllic house

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly and pictured and described, if not more impressive! It was clean and beautifully maintained. We were given plenty of equipment, clean linen and towels, and the owners were always on hand to answer any questions.

Myself and my fellow guests would highly recommend this property to others and would urge others to take a week or more here at this great house, in one of the best Scottish locations.

From the Owner

We love the setting of Cairngorm Country Cottage because of the panoramic views of the open countryside, and John’s house design has taken full advantage of this. The general area the house is located in is the Cairngorm National Park, which is known for its unspoilt natural beauty, huge selection of fantastic outdoor activities and wildlife. If you are looking for a lot of space for a family gathering or a group of friends this property is perfect, it is hard to show in the images but it is five times larger than the average British home. We currently(at the time of writing) have not only the most but the highest standard of reviews for any size of self catering property in the area (five out of five for every single thing such as cleanliness, location, comfort of beds, etc. The house is highly insulated and has cosy underfloor heating on both floors, which is fairly unique. There are also log fires in each of the lounges, not that they are needed but just for a cosy atmosphere.

From the Owner

Squirrels, pheasants, ducks, partridges and an amazing array of small wild birds are regular visitors at the feeding tables in the garden, which we just love. Some of the benefits of living in this wonderful area are the clean air, quiet roads, slower pace of life, amazing sunsets over the mountains to the west, the peace, and the tranquillity. The marker stone for the geographical centre of Scotland is just a mile across the valley, which means that we are in a very central location and can visit just about anywhere in Scotland for a day visit, including many of the beautiful west coast islands. There are so many fabulous visitor attractions, unique shops, coffee shops galleries, fun visits for the children and an amazing choice of activities. If you just want to be together to enjoy each others company you have not just an enormous hose but also acres of landscaped gardens and a private paddock for our guests sole use. There are lots of family games books, reference books, children's toys, a massage chair, TV'S, DVD Players, and CD Players to entertain you. In adjoining fields to the paddock there are horses, which children love to visit.
