House in Portinscale, Nr. Keswick, Lake District, Cumbria, England - Superb Location, Close To Pub, Cafes, Restaurant And Derwentwater Lake

Bracken Howe sleeps between two and eight in first rate accommodation. Independently inspected each year, it has a four-star GOLD rating by Visit Britain (February 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012). The owners, who are committed to high levels of service, ensure that standards are maintained by undertaking the cleaning and changeover of the house themselves. They contact holidaymakers by telephone prior to the start of the holiday and meet guests at Bracken Howe on arrival. A welcome bowl of Cumbrian food is provided.

Accommodation includes four spacious bedrooms, two excellent bathrooms and a downstairs toilet/washbasin. There is a lovely, comfortable lounge and superb open-plan dining room and kitchen. The kitchen is very well equipped with good-quality appliances, crockery, cutlery etc. There is off-road parking for 3 vehicles at the front of the house. The rear garden, which is south facing, enjoys day-long sunshine on good days. It has mature shrubs, lawn/drying area and patio with garden furniture. There is a lockable garage for storing bicycles and sporting equipment.

From its elevated position on a quiet cul de sac, Bracken Howe has wonderful views of the fells ranging from Grizedale Pike to Blencathra (Saddleback), with glimpses of Bassenthwaite Lake.

Portinscale is a small attractive village on the shores of Derwentwater and is located very close to Keswick and Bassenthwaite Lake. The nearby Farmers Arms serves food and is popular with our guests. Also close by is The Chalet, a superb cafe/restaurant (highly rated on Tripadvisor), two other cafes and the Derwentwater Hotel. From Bracken Howe it is only a few minutes by car to Keswick or a pleasant walk of 15/20 minutes. A lovely short stroll takes you to Derwenwater with its two picturesque marinas.

Bracken Howe is an excellent starting point for many superb walks: up Cat Bells, along the shores of Derwentwater and into the beautiful Newlands Valley. Whinlatter Forest Visitor centre (a few minutes away by car, rather longer by bike!) has stunning views and walks, exhilarating mountain-bike trails, wildlife, adventure play for children and a cafe. The visitor centre is also one of the viewing points (by live nest cameras) of the Bassenthwaite Ospreys.

Bracken Howe has complimentary membership of Keswick Leisure Pool (for up to six people). Mountain bikes can be hired at the Leisure Pool.

We regret we do not accept pets at Bracken Howe.

About Jeff

We live at Cockermouth only 15 minutes drive from Bracken Howe which enables us to carry out cleaning and changeover ourselves. This is important to us to maintain the high standards of cleanliness and comfort for holidaymakers.

We love the Lake District and are fortunate to live here permanently.

We have the experience of letting another holiday cottage in the Lake District which we have let for 16 years.

Why Jeff chose Keswick & North Lakes

We purchased Bracken Howe because of its wonderful position just outside Keswick with fabulous views of the fells. In addition we realised the house had great potential. We spent two years thoroughly refurbishing it from top to bottom to a high standard and commenced holiday letting in 2009.

What makes this house unique

We love the convenient position of the house on a quiet cul de sac yet within walking distance of a friendly pub and a superb cafe/restaurant. We also enjoy the 15 minute walk into Keswick and a short stroll to the shores of Derwentwater.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: All the furniture in the house, mostly of solid oak, is of very good quality. This also applies to bedding, cooking equipment, porcelain and cutlery. The house is well equipped with storage space on each of the three floors and the kitchen has plenty of units. Outside: There is a small front garden of lawn and shrubs, together with a paved parking area for three/four cars. In the rear garden there is a small lawn with mature shrubs and a retractable washing line. There is a patio with a table and chairs for eight and a Weber barbecue. There is also a rear garden gate giving a small short cut towards the restaurant and cafes and the path into Keswick. Swimming facilities are in the Keswick Leisure Pool, a few minutes drive away. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen is provided, as are tea towels. If a booking in excess of one week is made we will change the bed linen each seven days. We do not normally provide personal towels for guests but this can be arranged at a small extra charge. Other: In the hall there is under stairs storage. The attached lockable garage provides secure storage for bikes, and other sporting equipment.

Just Perfect

Bracken Howe was fantastic, really well equipped we wanted for nothing. The views from the front were magnificent, I could have spent a week looking out of the attic windows. Plenty of walks from the doorstep, a decent bus service and owners who took the time to meet ant greet, would highly recommend this property and hopefully will return.

Best holiday home ever!

This was our first stay at Bracken Howe and wow it was fantastic. The house is immaculately clean with 4 lovely bedrooms and the attic bedroom was a great hit with our boys. There are 2 great sized bathrooms with both showers and baths in and there was always enough hot water. The house was very well equipped....home from home, and had stunning views. Great location with only a 20 min walk into Keswick. The owners could not do enough for us, calling us before the holiday and meeting us on arrival. Fantastic place and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing break in the Lake District. Hope to return again next year.

Beautifully appointed & stunning location

We stayed at Bracken Howe for a friends weekend away. The house is beautifully furnished with good sized rooms and more than you will ever need for a weekend away. Jeff met us at the property, took the time to show us around before leaving us to settle in with a very generous welcome pack which included incredibly tasty local plum bread and honey which was most appreciated by all! The house is in a great location with easy access into Keswick, just a 15-20 minute walk across the fields (made up footpath) and we were lucky enough to be there for the Victorian Fair on the Sunday. The house has stunning views of the Skiddaw range and there are a great number of walks which can start directly from the property. There are several restaurants, pubs and cafes within walking distance of the property and we can certainly recommend the hot chocolate atThe Chalet which was much appreciated after our climb up Cat Bells. This is a beautiful property which we hope to return to as soon as we can.

Bracken Howe - home from home

So often photographs and descriptions exaggerate a property. Not so with Bracken Howe. It is even better than the extensive photos. Spotlessly clean, so thoughtfully well equipped that during our seven day stay we wanted for absolutely nothing. Despite a cold, soaking day on the fells, all six of us were able to take hot baths/showers with a seemingly endless supply of hot water. A real boon.

We know the Keswick area quite well so most of our walks were straight from the door, using the car only twice during the week. The pub is three minutes walk and serves good "pub food" whilst the café further down the road ( still only five minutes walk ) becomes a very good restaurant in the evening.

The owner, Jeff, met us on arrival explained everything in detail, and, before leaving ,left his phone number should we need to contact him.

Despite the very poor weather, we had a brilliant family week with our son, daughter in law and twin fifteen year old grand daughters

We would have no hesitation in recommending Bracken Howe to anyone wanting a similar holiday.

The perfect family base

We have just spent a week at Bracken Howe and would recommend it to anyone. The house is a very good size, well equipped, warm and comfortable. Two bathrooms were particularly welcome with a part of 6. The location is also ideal; Portinscale being within easy walking distance of Keswick but removed enough from the town to be very peaceful. Even so, there are three good places to eat out within a 5 min walk. The view from the front of the house to Skiddaw is stunning.

The owner is a charming man who went out of his way to ensure we were settled in.

A non-refundable deposit of £100 is required on booking Bracken Howe, with the balance of the rent due four weeks before the holiday. If the house is Booked within the four -week period prior to the arrival date, the full amount is due on booking. A security bond of £100 to be added when the balance is paid, the bond to be returned within 7 days, provided there is no damage to the house or contents. Payments may be made by cheque or direct to our bank account.
