Lovely and Cosy Cabin in West Calder, Edinburgh and Lothians, Scotland

"Shepherds Rest" provides tasteful, luxurious accommodation with a difference. It has an en-suite shower room, a settee by day that folds into a double bed at night and a small cooking area with hob and a small fridge. The hut is a work of art, superbly insulated, beautifully crafted and based on the original 19th century Victorian shepherd's hut. It makes for the ideal hideaway and rural retreat taking you back in time for a truly relaxing and unique place to stay. The views from the shepherds hut are breathtaking: it has a wonderful position on the organic farm of South Cobbinshaw overlooking the Pentland Hills and Cobbinshaw Loch. The 310 acre loch was built in 1818 to feed the Union Canal and was also used by passing steam trains to collect water. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to wintering wildfowl and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers.

Lynda and David have lived at South Cobbinshaw Farm since precisely 1997. David runs an organic fruit and vegetable box scheme and grows some of the vegetables in the field between the cottage and the loch. Also living on the farm is their 2 boys (Finn and Keir), a black labrador (Tess) and 2 hens.

Notes on accommodation: Life inside the hut is compact – after all it is glamorous camping, yet with the high ceilings and double bed its charm gives it big personality - after all it's much more glamorous than camping! Clothes washing facilities are in the utility room inside the owner’s house accessed through a side door. The owner’s do occasionally use the washing machine in the utility room but respect this space for guests and guests are given priority. The shepherd’s hut is a complete escape therefore there is no internet connection. If you need access, WIFI is available when inside the utility room in the main house. Outside: The shepherds hut has its own garden with the most gorgeous views over open countryside, It has a small decked area with outdoor tables and chairs and a barbecue is available on request. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels are provided. The property is cleaned ready for all guests arrival.

Beautiful and peaceful retreat

We had a wonderful few days here as an escape from kids and work, and it was all that we'd hoped for and more. The location is romantic and stunning - very much off the beaten track and with beautiful views all-round. The hut is finished to a high standard and seems bigger than it looks in the pictures, and it has everything you could need and a lovely outdoor area to sit. Very cosy and romantic. We would love to return and would highly recommend it. The area is not far from West Calder train station, and trains to Edinburgh are cheap and quick, so we found it handy for a day that we had in Edinburgh, too.

An excellent 'away from it all' holiday

Very clean, well equipped, compact, warm unusual accommodation. I spent two weeks here and loved every minute.The views with breakfast are wonderful. The site is as described not overlooked and with good parking.

I found the local rail service from West Calder to Glasgow and Edinburgh every 30 mins excellent value and saved the hassle of parking and the cost. The family are all very friendly and nothing is a bother to them. All in all a quiet, peaceful holiday 'away from it all' one I would recommend.
