Fisherman's Cottage with WiFi and views to the harbour.

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
HOUSE IN MORTAGNE-SUR-GIRONDE, CLOSE TO THE HARBOUR, RESTAURANTS, SHOPS & NEAR GREAT BEACHES - Less than a minute's walk to the harbour with its waterside restaurants/cafés and shops.

Our Fisherman's cottage is in the pretty port of La Rive, Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Mortagne is a lovely fishing village in the Charente-Maritime - only 20 minutes drive from the great beaches at Meschers and Royan. The village has all you need for your holiday - in the upper town there is a pizzeria, a bar, and all the essential shops including bank and post office. The cottage is just 100 metres from the port, where there are restaurants, cafes and a few shops - a boulangerie, a cabin selling freshly made hot dishes when you don't feel like cooking, and a little stall with fresh fruit, wine and other essentials ! The area is a haven for birdlife - there are wonderful walks out towards the Gironde estuary, where you can spot storks, herons, egrets and other waterbirds. The marais is perfect for cycling and there is horseriding available too. The house itself is an old fisherman's cottage, and was once an "epicerie" (a village grocers shop) and has a large open plan living area, with a well equipped kitchen, and 3 bedrooms. There is a brand new timber decked terrace overlooking the port, with table, chairs and barbecue. The perfect holiday house from which to visit the tourist attractions in the area - to spend long days on the nearby beaches - or to simply soak up the sun and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this wonderful area of France.

About the Owner

We are Blue and Jo Walshe (Gites en Charente Maritime) and after spending lots of time in France, and especially in the Charente-Maritime area over many years we have finally done it and moved here ! We now live just a few kilometres away from our gite in Mortagne, which we bought in 2013. We have always loved France for its food, its wine, and especially for its way of life - we have found a little bit of paradise here - and hope you will too.

Perfect holiday haven

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we stepped into the beautifully presented Fisherman's Cottage we felt its peace and comfort envelop us. Everything in the gite has been carefully considered, so that whatever you need is there for you, cleverly placed exactly where you want or need it to be.

Fancy flopping in a big comfy chair with a glass of Pineau and a book or film? Blissfully easy.

Fancy sitting with a coffee while enjoying the view down the village, breathing in harbour air through shutters thrown wide? The inviting niche next to the upstairs window is ready for you.

Fancy dozing away the late evening next to a glowing woodburner after a satisfying meal in a local restaurant? Deliciously possible.

On this occasion we visited as a couple and the gite provided all that we wanted; the perfect holiday haven in which to unwind, and from which to explore the fascinating local area. The cottage would, however, equally well meet the requirements of a family; lovely clean, spacious rooms, two loos, bunk beds for tired, happy children, provision for the baby with high-chair and safety gate, an exceptionally well equipped kitchen with a perfect space for easy meals, a safe and secure terrace outside accessed by irresistibly inviting wooden steps.

The Gironde region offers so much; we pottered south from Mortagne along tiny country lanes, dipping down to the river, wandering out through reed beds to the mud flats. We explored beautiful Talmont, and lazed in a riverside restaurant at Meschers, watching the peaceful harbour and pretty sailing yachts. We drove north to Rochefort and La Rochelle with their bigger boats, tempting shops and grander aspects. We wound our way back again through the waterways around La Seudre finding delectable fresh oysters for supper. In early March, Mortagne itself was just shaking off the winter and preparing for warmer days, but even so it was already all too easy to relax there watching the world and the river come and go with a coffee or a chilled glass.

The owners are delightful - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful; accessible but not intrusive. Their customer service and care is exemplary.

The gite contains an excellent level of up-to-date local information, helpful tourist leaflets, maps and interesting guide books.

We had a wonderfully restful and interesting week, finding that perfect holiday sense of having been lifted out of ourselves for a while. We have no hesitation in whole-heartedly recommending your stay at Fisherman's Cottage.

Just returned from a wonderful relaxing holiday in Mortagne. This is the first year the cottage has been available to rent and every care has been taken by the owners to provide a clean, well equipped, homely feel for your holiday. We loved it so much we extended our holiday and have already booked again for next year.

From the Owner

We fell in love with Mortagne when we first had a holiday here a few years ago, and we've come back many times since then - we love the marina with its restaurants and cafes - there is always something to watch, and yet it's peaceful and relaxing. There are beautiful walks from the port itself - and for anyone interested in birdwatching it's a must ! And when you can tear yourself away there are lots of nearby places to visit - from historic towns such as Saintes or Cognac, to bustling cities such as Bordeaux or La Rochelle, and beaches at Meschers or Royan, And when all you want to do is relax with a good book and a coffee or a glass of the local pineau - our little terrace is perfect.
