About the property

Cottage in Treknow, Tintagel, North Cornwall, England - Quiet Hamlet, 10 Minutes Walk To Beach, 5 To Coastal Path. Great Surf And Pubs

Rock House is located in a small hamlet on the coast of North Cornwall a short amble from the South West Coast Path. The village of Trebarwith Strand with its famous surfing beach is within a few minutes walk and the Cornish section of the wonderful cliff path, which meanders for some 630 miles around the coast offering spectacular views and an uninterrupted walk from Minehead to Poole, is within a stone’s throw of the front door. Rock House is a beautiful old slate building with a traditional Cornish cottage feel. The house has a well equipped kitchen which is - like the rest of the house - cosy and stylish. The kitchen includes a good sized fridge freezer, two ovens, a microwave and electric hob. There is a full range of equipment and (if you're visiting in the colder months) a Rayburn stove which warms the cockles, dries socks, heats the water and bakes bread. Outside, a small lawned garden and a pretty, cloistered slate barbecue area is available.. perfect for those sunny summer evenings. The barbecue area incorporates an outside loo and utility room equipped with washing machine and dryer which can be made available for guests. The house also has cosy bathrooms, comfy beds and can be let complete with linen and towels.. We also offer complimentary toiletries, from the fabulous Arran Aromatics Feel Good range, to all our guests. Rock House is spacious and has three main bedrooms, the master bedroom with 5' double bed and adjoining ensuite shower room (with underfloor heating for those cold winter mornings), the guest room with another double and the children's room with two singles and a bunk. There is a travel cot for babies (although we do ask guests to bring their own baby linen) which will fit comfortably into any of the three bedrooms. The main bathroom - which has a bath, loo and washbasin - and the two double rooms have a wonderful view across the valley. There is a sitting room with comfy chairs and an open fire, which is also equipped with TV, DVD/BluRay, Stereo and a great collection of movies and books. A good sized dining room with the Rayburn stove in an inglenook, comfortably seats eight. Treknow, within an easy walk of Tintagel, is a small settlement of some 100 dwellings established it is said, in the early part of the 16th century to house the quarry workers who served the stone merchant vessels which landed at the nearby natural harbour. Rock House itself is reputed to be the home of quarry captain, “Captain Jack”. It is the second oldest house in the village and built of Cornish slate (no doubt from Captain Jack’s quarry) and is full of old fashioned charm. There are plenty of charming local pubs and restaurants within walking distance, including the spectacular “Port William’ perched above the beach with its entrancing views of the ocean. The North Cornwall coast is peppered with secluded coves, peaceful walks, great beaches, charming towns and fishing villages. Padstow, now renowned for its association with Rick Stein as much as for its pretty harbour, fishing fleet and winding lanes is within easy reach as is Port Isaac an historic village with a real Cornish feel and the filming location for ITV’s “Doctor Martin”. If you’re a keen walker, surfer, beach bum, foodie or real ale fan, there is no better place to find spectacular views, varied walks, charming pubs, restaurants and real relaxation and if you have a young family, there’s plenty to do within easy reach. Please note that Treknow Cottages maintains a no smoking policy in all accommodation.

Exceeded all expectations

The photos on the site don't really do this house justice. After a week in Treknow, I am convinced it is far and away the best property in the village. The house was spotlessly clean and is equipped with everything a family might want on holiday ...but it doesn't "feel" like a holiday home...it just feels like a home. Communication with the owner via this site was perfect and Kim, the caretaker, gave us a very warm welcome. Parking for 3 cars (we even managed to get a 4th in when friends came to visit us) is no mean feat in Cornwall and that in itself made our holiday much easier. The outdoor space is very well planned. It was easy to walk to and from Trebarwith and basic shopping needs could be met in Tintagel (5 mins away by car). We will definitely try and book here again ....we were sad to leave and can't wait to come back.

Great 2-family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect holiday here in Treknow with close friends, eight of us sharing the house. We had a very friendly welcome from Kim, who was so kind even though we were very late in arriving due to terrible traffic on the M5. The house had so much charm, and everyone had enough space. We loved how the house was in such a quiet village (no sounds at night except birds and bleating lambs), yet how it was also such an easy walk down through two meadows to the beautiful beach. We were able to walk down to the beach once or twice a day, even carrying a two-year-old. It was also an ideal location to walk in two lovely directions along the coastal path, and we walked with the four young children over to the castle at Tintagel. Although we also enjoyed walks over at St. Nectan's Glen and in the picturesque Valency Valley, we liked the house so much that we rarely left except for excursions to the water. Thanks, Kate and Kim, for your attention to all the details to make this such a memorable and special stay!

I would like to fib and say it was awful and protect it from overbooking. However it was truly wonderful with beautiful views, ideally situated and full of charm.

The property is homely and has all the requirements you need whilst keeping a traditional atmosphere, a truly magical place where your stress disappears overnight.

Perfect Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a wonderful week, we all loved the cottage and location (I especially enjoyed being cut off from wifi, signal and the outside world) and the personal touches of fresh cut flowers & lovely toiletries. The location was perfect, a short walk to Trebarwith Strand, for excellent surfing, with Tintagil only a short walk or drive for shopping essentials.

Lovely house in great location.

  • 5 of 5

We booked Rock House on the basis of previous reviews, and thought best to add our own to reiterate others opinions.

The house is quite deceptive in size, being larger inside than would appear from the outside or from the pictures online. You could easily have 4 adults & 4 children staying, it was just us and our 2 boys so had plenty of space.

The booking process was straight forwards, directions to property clear, and a nice welcome from Kim on arrival who took us through everything.

Property was clean, well equipped and homely.

It's in a great spot, less than 10 mins walk down to the beach at Trebarwith Strand by the shortest route, though imagine you may want to take the alternative (and incredibly scenic) clifftop path route if it's been raining of late.

Location is a fantastic base for exploring North Cornwall, Tintagel being a beautiful walk along the cliffs, even for little legs (our 2 , 6&9 didn't grumble, though the bribery of pasties and ice cream no doubt helped!),

Padstow, Boscastle, Port Isaac etc all a short drive away.

We ate on 3 occasions at the Port William, great views, good food at very reasonable prices especially the kids menu.

Recommend hiring bikes and doing the Camel Trail, Daymer Bay, and making note of the tide times if you're going down to Trebarwith Strand as the beach is completely covered at high tide!

Would not hesitate to recommend Rock House, would be nice if shower in ensuite was a bit more powerful but as we mainly used the main bathroom, wasn't an issue. Would definitely stay again!

Fantastic house in a beautiful location.

Fantastic, well appointed house in a perfect location to explore the North Cornwall coast.

Kate, the owner, was extremely helpful when we were booking Rock House. Kim, the caretaker was at the house to welcome us on our arrival, again very helpful.

Trebarwith Strand is a short walk from Treknow, two good Pubs that do good food also within walking distance.

Rock House is very comfortable with 3 spacious bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen, a homely dining room with an Aga and a lovely lounge with an open fire.

We had a fantastic winter holiday at Rock House and would highly recommend it.

Further Details:

The old fish cellars in Port Isaac have a fresh selection of local and imported seafood and Padstow's Rick Stein Deli provides excellent pies, pasties etc.

There are some excellent eateries locally. Within a short walk the Mill House Inn offers great local fine dining fare and the Port William, overlooking the beach does great pub grub. Tintagel has many pubs, a fish and chip shop and Indian restaurant and further afield, you can dine at Nathan Outlaw's place in Rock. Padstow with it's various Rick Stein outlets is a great food destination and there are super places in Port Isaac, Wadebridge, Camelford and Rock.

Staying at Rock House you are ideally placed to visit the many local attractions. Here’s a few: Bike Hire, it’s great fun to ride along the many cycle only paths such as from Wadebridge to Padstow. The Hidden Valley with the "Crystal Treasure Hunt" is stimulating, educational and fun. Bodmin & Wenford Railway is open all year with "Santa Steamings" at Christmas. For the older, more energetic ones, Crealys is a white knuckle adventure park. As well as the excellent local surf and sand beach at Trebarwith, beaches can be found at Polzeath, Daymer Bay, Tregardock, The Strangles, and in countless coves. A number of boats offer sea trips and fishing as well as island birdwatching. Close to home is Tintagel (King Arthur’s) Castle. The Eden Project's high-tech domes provide for different climates in which the world's most interesting plants and habitats can be found. Decorating your house and village for Christmas is something of a tradition in Cornwall. You'll enjoy seeing the local ones but for a knock your socks off experience, see the Mousehole Christmas lights!

Other attractions; The Lost Gardens of Heligan, St. Nectan's Glen, St. Michaels' Mount, Launceston & Pendennis Castles.. to name a few.
