About the property

Cottage in Appledore, North Devon, England - Quiet Location, a Stones Throw from the Waters Edge

Hidden away in the historic north Devon fishing village of Appledore with its beautiful coastal setting near Bideford, Poachers Cottage is close to some of the area’s most famous sandy beaches. The cottage is full of character – even the access via the narrow and colourful Irsha Street plays its part. Originally a fisherman’s cottage within a pretty courtyard, this lovingly restored and welcoming property has a relaxing atmosphere, beautifully made soft furnishings and still retains many original features which are listed by English Heritage including a massive oak beam in the kitchen, open fireplaces and cottage style original winding stairs. (Stair gate provided) Appledore is a lovely place to explore, with gift and antiques shops, several great pubs and cafes, the heritage of an annual book festival and a seasonal passenger ferry across the water to Instow’s long sandy beach. Bring your own boat and use the public slipway, go surfing at Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands or Croyde, cycling or walking on the Tarka Trail or simply sit on the little slipway 30 paces from the cottage overlooking the estuary and watch the sailing boats and flocks of migratory birds.

A great place to stay anytime of year.

About Joanne Wade

Hello, our names are Mike and Jo and we have both lived in North Devon all our lives. We come from farming backgrounds and bought our present property in 2009 after some life changing health issues. We live nearby and are on hand should you have any questions. We have a wealth of knowledge regarding the locality and can recommend beaches, places to visit or the best local pub!

Joanne Wade purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Joanne Wade chose Torridge District

Before buying this cottage Mike and I looked at about 20 cottages. When we walked into Poachers, it was warm and had a special feel to it. It looked very different than it does now but we could see that it had a great deal of potential. We spent the spring of 2010 renovating it including a new kitchen and 2 new bathrooms. Its set in a quiet courtyard in Irsha Street and is literally a stones throw from the waters edge. There is a small slip way about 30 paces from the door where you could sit and watch the tide coming in with a nice cold glass of your favourite tipple! All in all its a lovely place to spend a week or 2 with loads to do in the area including sailing, surfing, walking, cycling or just relaxing.North Devon is still unspoilt, very pretty and a really lovely place to visit.

What makes this cottage unique

Poachers Cottage is equipped and decorated to a very high standard with a modern kitchen including dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave, Tassimo coffee machine, stylish granite worktops, flagstone floor and original beams. There are 2 bathrooms, 1 ensuite with luxury spa bath and shower over and 1 shower room with roomy walk in shower with great water pressure in both. The sitting room has 2 good sized comfortable sofas, TV, DVD player and wood-burner effect fire. The cottage also has full central heating. There a 2 bedrooms, one with 5ft double bed and the other with 2 x 3ft single beds. Both rooms are tastefully decorated and furnished. All soft furnishings have been professionally made.

There is a small car park 50 metres from the cottage cost is £16 for a weekly ticket.

A hidden gem!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we stepped into Poachers Cottage we felt right at home. Awaiting us was a sumptuous cake, a bottle of wine and a comfortable, cozy cottage.

The owners have taken great care in supplying everything needed to make you feel comfortable and at home. Beautiful furnishings and a well stocked kitchen added to all the amenities needed for a great stay.

We absolutely recommend this cottage, and hope to return one day.

Thank you Jo!

What a Gem

Quick response from Jo on my inquiries during the booking process which was easy.

After a 4 hour drive we landed in Appledore exact at 3 O'clock.

We parked just outside the closed down pub near the cobbled courtyard entrance to unload our stuff.

We were greeted by a very well appointed and tastefully decorated cottage.

We found fresh flowers, a lovely home baked cake, milk in the fridge and a nice quality bottle of red wine.

I am not sure if you can not find a better appointed cottage, nice size TV with HDMI connector ports, so you can bring your Amazon fire stick or read one of the many books including 1 about the history.

2 nice size sofas in the living room, everything you want in the kitchen and enough storage in the bedroom. 2 bathrooms one with a supper walk in shower and one with a good size bath.

If you have to be critical the key in the front door is a bit fiddly and if you

used to a hard bed the double bed is soft but cuddly.

I will recommend this cottage to anybody.

The village host a few good pubs, we did have a disappointed meal in the beaver but it has a great atmosphere and friendly staff.

My favourite pub for food has to be the Seagate, always buzzing dog friendly and great staff.

If you like biking try the Tarka trial a level car free track.

The lack of a proper beach to walk the dog on was for us a bit disappointing, you will need to drive to Westward ho or Instow.

Jo thanks for a great holliday

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully restored and well presented cottage in the heart of Appledore. We had a fantastic stay in this property, it has a lovely cosy sitting room and the kitchen has everything you need for a comfortable self catering holiday. The beds in the cottage are extremely comfortable and the two bathrooms one of which is ensuite to the master bedroom are modern and spotlessly clean. We love Appledore and the surrounding area including Braunton Saunton Westward Hoe Woolacombe and Exmoor. From Instow you can explore the Tarka Trail through Fremington Quay to Barnstaple and beyond. The local pubs especially The Champ and The Seagate are excellent. The owners Mike and Jo are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble, we will definitely be back.

Charming cottage full of character

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is beautifully and tastefully decorated. As soon as we walked in,

I didn't care if the weather was going to be good or not, because it is like a little haven with a comfortable relaxing lounge. There is a cobbled courtyard in front of the property. It was great being able to walk 10 yards to the seafront too.

We had a cake and wine on arrival which was a lovely welcome. I would highly recommend this property to a friend or relative.

A Little Gem

  • 5 of 5

Have come back from a lovely week at this cottage. What a little gem all we could have wanted and more. I don't want to say too much as once you have stayed here I am sure you will want to come back again and that might mean we can't come when we want too. A lovely relaxing stay in a great cottage in a lovely location. I could live here. Lovely places to go and eat and drink. Great for couples and families.

Magic Cottage Experience

  • 5 of 5

Poacher's Cottage is set in the heart of the old fishing cottages along Appeldore's historic quayside. We experienced all the sense of the past while enjoying the lovely welcome of comfort and style in this beautifully and imaginatively redecorated cottage. Bright and light and thoughtfully supplied, this quaint cottage provides a place to unwind and explore the stunning coast line to Hartland Quay and the Tarka trail of the Torridge River. (Wish we'd had more time to do the walks!) It's also perfect for exploring the village atmosphere of Appeldore itself, with pubs within stone's throw, providing great food, and when we were there, fantastic jazz at The Beaver on Monday night. The river is a magnet, day and night - always changing and there are lots of coffee shops and restaurants to tempt the wanderers who get caught in watching its ebb and tide. We loved exploring the alleyways and finding craft co-peratives and fish and chips shops, and friendly volunteers who shared their appreciation of the history at the local Maritime Museum. With overnight parking just a few metres away from the cottage we loved its convenience and being nestled so centrally. The architecture of the cottage retains its character, and the refurbishment provides all the luxury and comfort that makes a holiday. We were there in late autumn visiting from Australia, so beaches weren't a priority, but the comments in the visitor's book conveyed a sense of families having wonderful summer memories of crabbing and other seaside delights. We did see surf school at Westward Ho! but its charm for us was its stones and sheep! Poacher's Cottage totally lived up to the expectations we had from our internet research; every care had been taken to make us welcome in its charm and cleanliness, and we take away cherished memories of a fun-filled and varied family holiday and a great opportunity to research family history from past centuries.
