The Old Bakery Garden Room is a cosy two person self catering cottage located in the middle section of the garden of The Old Bakery Bed and Breakfast in the centre of Georgeham near Croyde. It comprises an original stone building that has been completely refurbished and extended to create a really intimate and attractive layout arranged in an L shape. The refurbishment has been carried out to a high standard and is now ready for use. The development aims to keep the character of the original building whilst providing modern levels of insulation, warmth, comfort and accommodation making it suitable for year round use. The accommodation is open plan and comprises a bed room and sitting area in the original building with the kitchen/dining area and shower room in the extension. The dining area faces south west and has a large full height window looking out onto a private patio and decking area which is for your sole use and is quite a sun trap. The kitchen is equipped with a two ring ceramic hob, combination microwave oven, fridge with freezer compartment, dishwasher, toaster and electric kettle as well as all the normal utensils, pots and pans etc. There are two 2' 6” single beds that can be zipped together to create a King sized double making the accommodation suitable for both singles and couples. The cottage only sleeps two people but there is room for a baby in a travel cot. Please no toddlers.

Please note we do not allow dogs or any other pets.

We do, however, have our own 2 year old dog called Bobby. she is very good natured and loves company but if you ignore her, she will usually get the message and ignore you. She often sits on the steps leading down from your part of the garden to the lower part watching our chickens!

About David Morton

Having lived in Bristol most of our married life, we moved to Georgeham in 2010 to set up The Old Bakery B&B which has been very successful and a big change from our previous careers as a civil engineer and nurse.

The property had a disused stone building in the garden and after 3 years of deliberation, we finally bit the bullet and have invested heavily by completely refurbishing and extending the building to create a really lovely self catering cottage.

We love living in a village community and so close to the sea.

David Morton purchased this cottage in 2010

Why David Morton chose Croyde

Georgeham is a delightful and friendly village with lots of life and character. Less well known (and less busy in summer) than its more famous neighbour of Croyde just down the road, Georgeham is a bit of a hidden gem with lovely thatched cottages, a great village store and two excellent pubs!

It is just a mile and a half from the stunning North Devon coast line with literally miles of sandy beaches, hidden coves, cliffs and headlands.

We had a very special purpose in mind when we bought The Old Bakery - to provide free respite holidays to young adults facing particular challenging circumstances. You can find out more at www.pauls-fund.co.uk

What makes this cottage unique

Fresh air, relaxation, peace and quiet yet close to plenty of action and life if you want it.

Georgeham is surprisingly convenient with it's village store (which we own but don't run), garage and two local pubs both a short walk away. They are very friendly, serve great food and are very civilised (!). Oh, and we even have an hourly bus service to Barnstaple.

Lovely cottage, lovely area and lovely hosts

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our long weekend and loved the Garden room! It was perfect for the two of us, had everything we needed in a very intimate setting! Loved the electric fire! That was well used on our stay as we had snow! David and Pippa were very friendly and helpful and just lovely hosts! The area was so nice and they had everything you need in the little village of Georgeham! Would highly recommend the King Arms pub which was less than a minutes walk from the cottage, the food was amazing and staff were so friendly! Would highly recommend staying here and would definitely come back!

Tastefully refurbished and perfect for 2 people.

We arrived with storm Brian which made the cottage even more cosy. Two nice pubs within walking distance and the discovery of Putsborough beach was a revelation, it is beautiful. Other beaches only a short drive away. Great area, some of the roads test your driving/reversing skills, although there are plenty of passing places. David and Pippa were welcoming and gave us good information. We enjoyed the home made lemon cake and it was a nice touch to have milk in the fridge and teabags on hand for that first cup of tea. We will definitely go back.

very enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was ideal as a base for exploring the local area. The interior was suitably equipped for a short stay, modern and clean. The stained glass window is a work of art. Outside is a delightful garden and the steps were well illuminated during darkness (less mobile people might struggle to negotiate them).

A cracking little cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is in the little village of Georgeham, not far from the surfing beaches of Croyde and Saunton. It's off the main road in the middle section of garden belonging to the Old Bakery B&B. It's a real little gem! On arrival, we were greeted by the owners David and Pippa who instantly made us feel at home and offered advice about the cottage itself and the surrounding countryside. The place is tiny but immaculately clean and tidy and very well appointed with all the kitchen mods you could wish for. The sound-proofing is excellent, even on a night when the wind was blowing a gale we could hear nothing, the cottage is a very peaceful place to stay.

Most mornings we were visited by the owner's dog, a lively spaniel called Bobby who was always a delight to see and make a fuss of. Georgeham is a good base for exploring North Devon, my partner and I roamed all over the place and put in plenty of miles both walking and in the car. A note of caution, the roads around Georgeham are very narrow and hardly a journey goes by without having to pull in several times to let other traffic pass. That said, I never found it a chore and managed the week without incident.

All in all, We loved our week and would definitely recommend this delightful little cottage to anyone.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind and informative review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay despite the narrow roads! Of course they are much quieter out of the school holidays and less of a challenge. The insulation not only keeps our noise but keeps the cottage very cozy as well so it is a great place to stay year round. All the best, David and Pippa

Comfortable property had everything we needed. Felt a little over bearing with all the dos and don't

  • 3 of 5

Weather was abysmal all week and that didn't help matters.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review and the helpful additional explanation by email about the dos and donts that you found a bit over bearing. We have reviewed your comments and made some changes. Firstly we have clarified that the internet is fully included in the rental and that no extra charges apply. We enjoy superfast broadband in to the village and have a great connection. We have removed the parental controls. We have removed references to being considerate in the use of electricity and water. This request reflected the fact that water is a scare resource in the southwest and we want to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible (although we do have solar panels and are with a 100% renewable energy company). Nevertheless, our guests are generally considerate anyway and this probably doesn't need to be said. However we do still ask guests to re-cycle as much as possible as we feel this is important, even when on holiday, and we are required to do so by the Council. In common with many establishments, we have also kept the sign about not putting tea bags, sanitary disposables and nappies down the toilet. Whilst this may be obvious, sadly it has happened and it cost us a lot of money to get the toilet unblocked. We hope this response addresses most, if not all, your concerns. With our best wishes, David and Pippa.
