Overview

About the property

Cottage close to Gorron, Mayenne, Pays De La Loire, France - Spring and Autumn dates still available for short and longer breaks. Easy access from Channel ports.

At busy times a car or tractor comes past here about every hour, there is a feeling of being in deepest, rural France and yet it's only 5 minutes drive to the small town of Gorron (and just 2 minutes to a lovely French village with an equally lovely French bar!) When you arrive here, look out for the old wagon wheel and the lions on the gateposts, come through the wooden gates and all you can see are trees and, at the bottom of the drive, the huge open sided barn. Park in the little car park and walk down to the house and suddenly there is a lake, a sunny terrace, my house and attached to it your beautiful cottage with its new windows, open door and welcome pack just waiting for you. If the day is cool the wood burner will be burning, the lamps will be lit and the towel rail will be hanging with warm towels there may even be a hot water bottle in your bed! If its hot and sunny (normal in summer time here) there will be fuel for the barbie on the terrace and wine in the fridge. Dump the bags, open the wine and take a walk right around the lake, watch the carp and maybe plan tomorrows fishing. Say hello to the two friendly dogs, Rory and Billy (promise them a walk in the woods). Walk across the old woodhen bridge and pinch It's real!

If you are feeling energetic there are two adult bikes free for your use. Cycle to the little village of Lesbois (you can walk it in 20 minutes, tops) collect fresh bread or have coffee (or maybe a beer/ calvados) in 'Le Marmite' the little bar or join the locals for a three course lunch (wine or cider included) made by the lovely Lionel for around a tenner. There are lots of other lovely local villages with friendly bars and little restaurants and way marked walks too (try Saute de Loup, Wolfs Leap, in nearby Brece.) Gorron is a nice, normal French town, clean, tidy, friendly and totally equipped with all the shops you need and a very decent supermarket and a garden centre that sells bait (though tinned sweetcorn works quite well or just some leftover baguette!) You will also find tennis, paintballing, cinema, indoor swimming pool, creperie, pizzeria, sports bar/tabac and assorted small shops including a British run butchers, selling proper bacon and homemade pork pies! For the seriously energetic, the magnificent Mont St Michel is 40 kms away, Europe's top tourist destination. The Normandy landing beaches, Bayeux and St Mere Eglise are 2 hours drive. Or take the high speed train from Laval(leaves every morning) to Eurodisney or Paris and have lunch in Montparnasse! The nearest gorgeous, sandy beaches are in Northern Brittany and Lower Normandy.

You will find lots of maps and tourist brochures in the cottage to help you plan days out. After a day around the lake or sightseeing, sleep with the sound of silence, wake to birdsong.

Not that it is always peaceful here. Oh no. All sorts of hanky-panky happens on the lake with those naughty ducks, fish leap and there are dogs to walk and wine to drink. There are moments of excitement and high drama when Dora, the miniature goat gets her head stuck in the fence....

I live here all year round so will always be on hand to help/suggest outings/ tell you what is going on locally. (Or, if you prefer, I'm happy to leave you to have your own adventures!)I will also provide meals, (at very reasonable rates)if required. You can take these in your house or my dining room or on your terrace. The cottage also has a cool box and a picnic blanket so you can pack a picnic to take to the woods! The farm up the road sells eggs and chickens and Guinea fowl ready for the slow the barbecue. This is a big mixed farming area so the food in the Mayenne is amazing, We are also close to Brittany and Normandy so the crabs in the supermarket are alive...! Cooking for yourself is also easy as the kitchen is fully equipped. New for 2015 is a separate freezer and ( oh joy!) a you can keep the ice cream frozen and clear up in a jiffy after the evening feast! The grounds have lots of fruit trees, you are welcome to help yourself (in season) to apples, pears, plums, cherries, raspberries and black currants......! Food shopping becomes a pleasure when there are wonderful markets like the one at St Hilaire du Harcoet on a Wednesday morning where they sell everything, livestock, vegetables, clothes, tractors, and hot Mayonnaise sausage baguettes, delicious! For history lovers there are lovely medieval towns to visit like nearby Domfront or wonderful Dinan, and one of the biggest and best preserved castles in Europe at Fougeres, about half an hour away. Eat crepes and drink a 'bolee' (cup)of cider in the little square at the entrance to the castle. In the evenings venture out for a meal/ drink or slump in front of the TV. There is Sky Freeview so you don't have to miss a thing. There is a DVD player and lots of books/games including a full sized table tennis table and darts board in the barn which can be lit up at night for evening tournaments! There is also a good WIFI connection. In the garden is a large field set up with a football goal for penalty shoot outs. Children of all ages on holiday here have a whale of a time. There is a big tin trunk in the barn chock full of outside games. There are swings and slides, ducks and goats to feed and for my smallest guests a big box of toys and another of bed-time stories. Gilbert the teddy presides over everything and is available for cuddles if you forget your own one!

Another word about my fish, yes MY fish! They are in perfect condition and I want them to stay that way. They don't have scars on their little mouths so please no barbed hooks and don't keep them out of the water too long, unless they are trout from the stream in which case you are allowed to cook them on the barbie. You will be the only people fishing as I do not issue day permits.

Above all I want visitors to feel at home here and to really relax. Please understand that we are not talking manicured lawns and perfectly tended borders. Things are a bit wild. There are patches of stingie nettles. (Monty Don would be VERY pleased!) That said I have worked hard on the cottage. It is very comfortably furnished and spotlessly clean. Please don't smoke in there.

Families love Weeping Willow Cottage but, please be aware the lake, is not fenced and VERY close to the house and cottage so the very small will need careful supervision. Older children will have a wonderful time as there is a small island on the lake perfect for Swallows and Amazons type games and the sort of wild woods just made for den building! They all love the little rowing boat. For horse lovers there are stables closeby and Haras du Pin, the French National stud is just over an hour away. This is also a great area for cycling and motor cycling, empty roads and rolling countryside rather than steep hills. Ask about secure storage and parking. The cottage is available throughout the year. The newly installed wood burner is very efficient. There are oil filled radiators for upstairs. The ceilings are low and it's very cosy. There are extra blankets and all the windows are double glazed. The 'ballon' water heater means there is always loads of piping hot water available. During the summer months there are lots of local 'fetes' many of which involve music. The bigger towns, like Le Mans host impressive son et lumieres and most of the villages are stiff with flower displays. But most of the entertainments in this area are very low key, countrified and very French and home grown. If pottering around antique and junk shops pleases you or maybe a car boot on a Sunday? You will love it here.

I will end with my gardens. Whoever planted the trees around the lake knew what they were doing. They are beautiful. Tall pines, pretty maples, graceful weeping willows line the banks. Each evening the setting sun glows red through the trees and casts a fiery glow across the lake making the gardens even more magical. Gradually dusks falls and all the stars appear, the moon rises and is reflected in the calm waters.

While you are here you might find yourself raising a glass to whoever planted those trees and letting this beautiful, old place cast its spell over you.

About Sue Baines

I live, with my two dogs, a Bernese Mountain dog and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 3 cats, next door to Weeping Willow Cottage. I fulfilled my dream of owning a property in France when I signed the contract and moved into the Moulin de Merault on my birthday in December 2013.

I returned from Kenya in July 2013, where I had spent 3 very happy years teaching Social Science. Before that I had worked in Sixth Form Colleges in both Yorkshire and Surrey.

Originally from South Wales, I have two grown up sons who work in London and three wonderful grandchildren.

Now I have retired, I am able to concentrate on making this place lovely, looking after my animals, walking, birdwatching, cooking and generally enjoying life in France. I also want to learn to fish!

Sue Baines purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Sue Baines chose Gorron

I searched in a number of different regions, both north and south before deciding this was my perfect place. I love the countryside, the tranquil surroundings, the friendly locals and wonderful food.Customers still say hello to each other here in banks and shops.

There is actually lots going on round about, most of it aimed at the local French and, surprisingly numerous, expat British community.

It's also near enough to wonderful tourist areas to make day trips easy, but, thankfully, it is also easy to get back home and sit, in peace, by the lake of an evening.

Being an easy drive from the channel ports is great. Also consider fly drive. Airports in the UK fly into Dinard or Rennes. Hire a car, you can be sipping wine on the terrace less than 2 hours later!

What makes this cottage unique

Anglers will enjoy the great fishing for carp and roach on the private lake that is just yards from the cottage front door!

Birders will enjoy the variety of habitats that surround the cottage and bring a huge variety of birds here.

Artists and photographers will find a range of beautiful subjects here. Lake and stream, woods and fields, rocky out crops and mossy banks.

Walkers and cyclists will love this area with its miles of country lanes and way marked paths.

Sightseers will find a huge variety of places to visit in the surrounding area.

Children will enjoy feeding and playing with my animals, boating, the grounds with swings, slides, plenty of room to run around and the full size table tennis table in the barn!

For everybody, natural, peaceful surroundings that are good for

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a lovely location for any type of holiday - active or relaxing.

The setting is delightful and we were lucky enough to spend much of our

time in the garden with the sun shining through the willow trees.

The cottage is cosy, well equipped and comfortable (especially Bed 1!).

There is plenty of outdoor space and amusing animals.

Sue was always willing to help with local information, suggestions for

outings and the best restaurants around!

Highly recommended for almost any family or age group.

Notes:
The cottage has been totally redecorated and refurnished. Everything is high quality. There are some antique pieces like the lovely mirror in the living room. It is a cottage, a very old one, the thick stone walls make it cool even on the hottest days. In some places the beams are low (the one on the stairs is particularly lethal!) The bedrooms, though light, airy and lovely are small. Each room has drawers for storage but the only wardrobe is on the landing. If you like old and quirky you will love it, if you want spacious, sorry its not for you! The kitchen and shower room are in a new extension added to the back so they are light and airy with high ceilings and skylights. The kitchen has a beautiful large double glazed window with blinds over looking the back garden and the orchard where my little goats live. Outside: Immediately outside is a sunny, south facing terrace for guests use. On the terrace is a table, chairs, parasol and stone barbecue also a small table and chairs for children plus a nice wooden playpen for the very small. On the other side of the flowerbed is a secluded lawn just for guests (shared with the resident ducks!) It runs down to the lake where there are loungers, deck chairs and another table and chairs for lakeside dining and sundowners! It is also possible to fish directly from the lawn as well as a variety of good spots around the lake. Moored on the bank is a rowing boat, for use on the lake.On the other side of the drive is a large, fenced lawn with, swings, slides and a football goal for penalty shootouts! Behind the cottage is an orchard where friendly goats, Dick and Dora live. There is a huge area of private woodland behind the cottage with woodland paths and a fast flowing trout stream running through it. Private and secure parking. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels (not beach towels) tea towels, bedlinen are all provided. These are changed once a week. The property is fully cleaned before new guests arrive. Cleaning materials are also provided for guests use. Other: Next door to the cottage is a huge barn with a full size table tennis table, darts board and other outside toys and sports equipment. Also secure storage for fishing tackle and cycles. Three, good quality, adult bikes are available, free for guests use.

Tranquil escape in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Weeping Willow cottage was a delightful escape from our busy lives. Set in beautiful grounds the lake is magical, feeding the fish is amazing (didn't know fish where so noisy and hungry!) and also the daily visit of the family of ducks from across the pond at feeding time.

The two dogs are just fabulous Rory is a big softie and Ruby just wants to be cuddled - both were such good companions.

Sue is a fantastic host, a valuable source of knowledge and local information, we would also recommend taking up the offer of her home cooking, which was very welcome after a long drive (and also very reasonably priced).

A charming gite situated in a lovely rural setting.

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely few days at this cottage. Mostly spent our time relaxing but did get out for some visits to nearby villages, lakes and forests. There is plenty to do in the surrounding area if you feel like being active. Sitting by the lake at the cottage watching the carp leaping or the ducklings foraging around us was at times all the activity we wanted.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments and thank you for choosing to stay with us it was nice to meet you. I was disappointed you felt unable to award the cottage 5 stars as I try so hard to make my guests comfortable and at home here. I know you were disappointed with the kitchen sink and I wanted to thank you for your feedback and say it has now been replaced with a beautiful new stainless steel one! Kind regards, Sue

TRANQUILITY

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a relaxing two weeks at Willow Tree Cottage. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by Sue who goes out of her way to ensure you have an enjoyable stay.

The cottage was as described and was a home from home with everything you could wish for. Most important the beds were very comfortable and the location so quiet we slept for longer. You can chill out at the cottage but there are so many lovely places to visit and some excellent French restaurants to try. Sue will be happy to advise you about places of interest and restaurants to try.

Bird song, amazing!!

I would second everything my Sister said about our stay! So very relaxing, just what was needed after a stressful few months. Lovely cottage and the surroundings perfect! Sue had lots of suggestions of places to visit and obviously knew the area extremely well. Got to know Rory, Billy, Dick, Dora, bootsie and Slippers very well. Lovely just to sit in the garden and not hear traffic, sirens, alarms etc! Thankyou Sue. from Margaret and the Garden Gnome!!

Perfect place for recharging batteries

  • 5 of 5

Weeping Willow Cottage is just as it looks in the picture. A gorgeous little cottage in a beautiful setting with everything needed for a lovely relaxing holiday. We had a warm welcome from owner Sue, who was always on hand to answer any questions and to advise about places to visit. The cottage itself is well equipped and very comfortable and there are plenty of outdoor spaces, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the tranquility. Sue's, very friendly, animals provide added entertainment! There are plenty of interesting places to visit in the local area and it is a particularly great area for cycling as the roads are so very quiet. An added bonus is that it is less than a 2 hour drive from the ferry port. We had a lovely two weeks and could have happily stayed longer. Highly recommended!

Weeping Willow Cottage

The setting of the cottage is pretty, relaxing and addictive.

Since arriving home we have spent many hours on immobillier websites in the hope of finding our own little bit of heaven! Our enjoyment of our holiday at Weeping Willow Cottage is going to cost us dear!

The cottage is well supplied, cosy and comfortable and Sue is extremely helpful in providing information on the restaurants, activities etc in the area. Our son loved his bit of fishing in the lake - husband went off exploring on his electric bike and the two ladies mostly sat in the sun and read - bliss.

Many thanks - The Thompsons

Carp fishing. Match fishing rather than super heavy weight fish, the lake has common, mirror and ghost carp and roach all are in excellent condition as the lake has not been fished regularly for a number of years. The setting is delightful, private and on the doorstep. Weight up to around 12 lb. The lake covers around half an acre. The Merault stream is accessible from several places on the woodland path and has trout.

Bird watching: variety of habitats on site means the birding is fabulous here. Water birds, Heron, Kingfisher, woodland,Woodpecker, birds of prey, Owls etc.

Walking. Huge variety of walks in the local area many way marked paths.

Cycling, the Tour passes within 2 kms of the cottage in 2015! Big cycling area lots of events.

The north Brittany and Normandy coastlines are an easy traveling distance by car. Mont St Michel, Granville and Cancale are all about 1 hour 30 minutes away by car. Take your pick from quiet beaches, small fishing villages or larger seaside towns. The famous Normandy invasion beaches are all under 2 hours drive. Although the memories and reminders of their famous past remains, they are now wonderful, long, sandy pleasure beaches that make a marvellous day out from the cottage.
