Overview

About the property

Cottage between Newport and Cardigan. Farmyard, Facing South, Own Garden With Firebowl, 10 Mins From Sea

An 18th Century Carthouse sympathetically restored to conservation standards with a simple yet elegant feel. Cartws Bach is attached to a 100 foot granary barn and cottage, it forms one side of the courtyard at the old farm of Bwlch Garregllwyd, now divided into three separate private residential properties; with a neighbouring converted barn on one side and the Farmhouse on the other, together forming a courtyard to the front. The cottage is south facing and looks out into its own little garden where you can have a BBQ.

The cottage is ideally suited for 2 adults and 2 children, or for a couple looking for a cosy and romantic retreat. The kitchen/living area looks out through the distinctive archway into the garden giving a lovely open feel to the room. Fully equipped with Belfast sink and slate worktops, a dish washer, washing machine, fridge and use of a freezer is available if required. 4 adults may find it a bit too "intimate" unless you are all very good friends! The upstairs sleeping area is open plan but with two distinctive sleeping areas, both rooms are open to the roof and if you think noise from others might be an issue, this is not the property for you. Most people really like the arrangement but a couple of people have found it too "open". There are curtain dividers as well as the wooden partition for privacy.

Hemp and lime give the walls an organic character, the wooden and slate floor a traditional feel, with beams and a wood burner adding to the atmosphere. Wooden painted stairs lead up to one room, cleverly divided by a rustic wood panelled byre - giving two distinct sleeping areas with their own character - the double bed in a dark wooded area and the two singles in a cheerfully painted cabin room, with stable door leading to the outdoor barn steps. Both areas look up to the original beamed roof area. The compact bathroom has a great shower within a 3/4 sized bath, mosaic tiling and glass shower screen. The water is solar or wood-burner heated. The property is set in 3 acres with lawns, vegetable gardens, woods, flower meadow and pond. Our grassy track leads down to a green lane (ancient bridleway) which in turn will lead you to many footpaths and tracks to explore, some which will take you down to where the faeries live. Main bus route is only two minutes walk, and by car the coastal towns of Cardigan and Newport are only 7 minutes away.

The cottage is in a farmyard setting with quiet neighbouring residential properties to either side that do not belong to us!

The cottage is attached to the barn where we live. Visitors are welcome to wander behind the barn and down the track.

There is a firebowl for your use behind the barn by the pizza oven area if you want to sit out and chat under the stars. Just let us know if you would like to do this.

We ask visitors to arrive after 4pm and leave before 11am please on day of departure thank you.

If the cottage is ready before 4pm then we will text you to let you know.

This cottage is not suitable for people who enjoy loud music or noisy parties!

It is a really peaceful place, and we enjoy that :D

We are in such a great location here, for travelling north south east and west... beaches 10 mins away

attractions in every direction!

About Lisa Hellier

Hello! We are Lisa Hellier and Mark Watkins. Lisa is a graphic designer, map maker and community artist originally from Glasgow and Mark Watkins a builder from LLangynidr, Brecon. We moved here from East Wales in 2008, having bought the barn as a derelict. For 4 years we lived in a caravan and Mark has been working on the barn ever since, starting with the Little Carthouse "Cartws Bach" which is the first section to be finished. Now we have just moved into the middle section of the barn as a workshop studio and we are ready to rent out the Cartws Bach which will help us to transform the rest of the barn and gardens. We wanted to be as environmentally friendly as possible and also create a real nature reserve and forest garden on the three acres that came with the barn.

Lisa Hellier purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Lisa Hellier chose Fishguard, Newport, The Preseli Hills & Bluestone

We decided to move to West Wales because we had camped here and loved the whole feel of the place..the empty beaches, the beautiful wildflower hedgerows, the wild sea. We kept meeting really interesting people from all over the country. The area is a Welsh speaking stronghold, with a mixture of locals and many people who have moved to the area. We were both interested in John Seymore and his Self Sufficiency book, and as it happens one of the first people we met here were John's family (we went to his house and drank the best apple juice ever!) and also bumped into his first wife and amazing artist Sally Seymore. We drove all over the place around West Wales and finally drew a circle round the area including Cardigan, Newport and the Preseli mountains.

Found the barn and bought it.

What makes this cottage unique

This property is perfect for families. It is not very far to get to the action in any direction. It is perfect for walking ( miles of footpaths in every direction ) and you could actually walk all the way to Cardigan on footpaths from here, we are right on a footpath network. You could actually walk to Cardigan without going on a road. Great cycling right from the doorstep a great road round the back of the Preselis with stunning views on the mountain road above Newport. There is The Mwldan Cinema and Theatre 10 mins away and enough things to do if its wet outside. We have three acres to explore and play in, and having a fire outdoors is always a treat, The STARS here are amazing. We have friendly neighbours with animals, horses and lambs. I have planted some salad and herbs for you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

what a lovely hideaway so cosy and beautifully designed. Really enjoyed our short stay here in the peaceful surroundings thanks so much for all the extra touches, wood top ups etc, amazing how warm it gets with the woodburner in such a short space of time! Really happy to stay somewhere where people share our environmental point of view - we recommend highly. All the best with the rest of your project.

There is a badger hole in the woods, and many other small creatures around little frogs and toads as well as colourful dragonflies and last year we had a hummingbird hawkmoth! Our mission is to turn the gardens into a bee sanctuary full of flowers. * NOW WE HAVE 4 FRIENDLY HENS who will feed out of your hands* :) Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Organic mattresses. Towels are provided. If you need a giant towel you will need to bring your own! For bookings of more than 7 days a change of sheets will be provided.

A++ Cottage, well-centered, highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is really impressive, it has inspired me quite a lots with its fusion of victorian and modern look. It is well centered if you are planning to visit Wales. There are numerous attraction places close-by. If you are a fan of sandy beach, it's only 10 minutes drive. If you are going with the family, I can reasure you that it's the safess place to be as the owner leaves next door and they are very very nice people. They even gave us some fresh eggs to bring home. We would like to thank them for making our stay so wonderful.

Peaceful location and great for getting to different parts of west Wales. We loved the cottage and enjoyed making the fire to warm the chilly Spring nights. The two boys loved teabag and wanted to takes him home. Many thanks to Lisa and Mark for a wonderful stay.

Perfect cottage in beautiful part of Pembrokeshire

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a fantastic three days at Cartws Bach. The cottage itself is so lovely - warm with the wood burner, beautifully arranged and decorated - much attention to detail to make living here easy and a real pleasure. Cosy double bed upstairs with two singles in the room next door. Perfect for our needs. The surrounding area itself was delightful too. No need to travel far for stunning cliff walks. Many thanks to Lisa & Mark. There is so much more for us to see in Pembrokeshire so we'll be back!

A delightful haven of cosy comfort

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my daughter and her partner and the moment we stepped through the door we felt at home. Although tiny and bijou the cottage is very thoughtfully laid out and everything is to hand. We really appreciated the little touches like the gorgeous fresh daffodils in a jug on the table with a fresh bara brith to welcome us (and milk in the fridge for a cup of tea) At night the cottage is cosy with the log burner and the stars outside were beautiful. Most probably my favourite cottage of all time.
