Griffiths Family, Kent August 2015.

Had a lovely week exploring local beaches and towns. La Rochelle was a lovely day out and the restaurant 'Le Duperre' opposite the Old Port is highly recommended.

La Tranche sur Mer and the coastline either side offers plenty of sandy beaches and there's a good selection of restaurants for an evening out.

The main sandy beach at Les Sables stretched for miles but became very crowded in the afternoon.

The house is lovely and big and serves as a good base to explore the region.

Loved this house

Red Shutters house is very comfortable. It's very central to lots of places, from beaches to amusement parks. After a day out and coming back tired, the sofas were great to lounge on and watch Sky TV. The kitchen has everything you need. I slept well and found the bed comfortable. Yes the church bells dong but it really didn't bother me. I met some really nice and helpful people in the town.

Lovely house

  • 3 of 5

Lovely comfortable house . The rooms are spacious and ceilings tall so t the house stays cool during the day and at night. It was lovely to have the British TV channels and there are plenty of books and games to keep everyone happy. Although a small vial leg there is a handy bank , boulangerie and supermarket very close. The agency were brilliant at making sure we found the property and could access it and that we had an enjoyable stay.

On the negative side we found we had to drive to everything, there was little to do on the doorstep and there is a bar next a door which we found loud at the weekend. The courtyard at the rear of the property did not get any sun so there was nowhere to sit in the sun at the house.

Owner's Response: We're glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Red Shutters Holiday Home. This is our first year of renting this house out so it is nice to know that you thought the house was comfortable and spacious. We also like having all of the local shops within walking distance, and don't mind the drive to the beaches. The village has a nice park and pond for fishing, and there are some great country walks nearby.

Red Shutters

Had a good week at Red Shutters.

Good points - large house, good facilities including free to air satellite TV, washing machine, games room, clean and tidy, central location with excellent access. Local supermarket 400m up the road and bakery 50m

Not so good - quite noisy from the road if you leave the windows open behind the shutters (tractors trundle past very early in the morning); church bells which seem to ring very erratically including one occasion over 70 times!! Rear yard is small and enclosed so no view.

Great central location as a base to visit all local areas including coast (25mins), La Rochelle (60mins), Les Sables (45mins). Roads are easy to navigate and virtually empty compared to the UK.

From the Owner

The Red Shutters Holiday Home was bought by Stuart in 2013 and he immediately set about modernising the house ready for renting it out. He uses the house himself out of season, and the summer holiday rentals are managed by Annette & Jason Khan. Stuart bought the house as he loved the quiet pace of life in the Vendée - with lots of fishing, walking, cycling and relaxing on the beaches. The house is in an ideal location for the local shops and he enjoys meeting the locals in the nearby bars and restaurants. It's only a 20 minute drive to the coast, and there are plenty of great seafood restaurants serving locally caught oysters and mussels. There's plenty to do in the area - surfing, treasure trails, karting, wine tasting, theme parks, country walks, bird watching and sailing. Great for families

New for 2016 - The O'Gliss Water Park is opening at the end of June 2016. This is less than a 10 minute drive away from the Red Shutters Holiday Home, and makes for a fantastic day out - with lots of Water Slides, Wave Machines, a Beach and cafes, and lots of River Courses to float along in inflatables. A Great day out for all of the family.

The fantastic beaches of the Vendée start from only 20 minutes’ drive away and you will be spoilt for choice - with surfing, body boarding, rock pools, sand dunes and miles of sand to explore. Many beaches have cafes and entertainment laid on in the summer. La Tranche and La Faute are the closest, and Les Conches and La Terrière are great for surfing! Much of the coastline is covered in pine forests - with picnic areas and cycle paths signposted throughout.

Champ St Pere is only an easy 3.5 hour drive on uncongested roads from the ferry terminal at St Malo, 4.5h to Caen, 5h to Cherbourg and 6.5h to the Eurotunnel at Calais.

Flights from the UK and Ireland land at Nantes and La Rochelle airports - both only an hour away, and car hire is available at both airports. A 10% discount is offered for using Brittany Ferries from the UK, and preferential rates on car hire are available at the airports.

The Champ St Pere area is very picturesque - with rolling hills, vineyards, sunflower fields and quaint villages & towns leading to the flat coastal area with its sandy beaches & pine forests. There are guided cycle & walking paths everywhere, taking in the local flora and fauna and passing many interesting villages and towns. Red Shutters is located in the centre of town, within walking distance to shops, banks, bakeries, a supermarket, petrol station, bars, and restaurants.

Further Details:

Within 8km is the Indian Forest Adventure Park with Zip wires, tree climbing, paint ball, water slides & pony rides; The Tropical Gardens at St Cyr which hosts a Polynesian Festival around the lotus lake in summer.

Within 18km are other tourist attractions such as The Chateau des Aventuriers with its treasure trail in the gardens; and a karting track at Angles.

60km: The fantastic Puy du Fou Theme Park, where you will be transported back in time to the age of the Gladiators, Vikings, Musketeers, and Medieval Knights. Not to be missed!

45km: La Rochelle where you can explore the arcaded shopping streets, wander through the bustling markets and dine at one of the many harbour side restaurants. There is entertainment in the streets every evening in summer and you can even take a boat trip to the nearby Ile de Re or Fort Boyard.

The Ile de Re makes a great day out - firstly you drive over the sea bridge towards the island, then stop off at La Flotte for a coffee and a wander around the cobbled streets & covered market, then head to St Martins for lunch in one of the many restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. You can climb the bell tower to get a spectacular panoramic view of the island, and see the donkeys in striped pyjamas!

For a more tranquil day out, there is the Marais Poitevin (60km), with miles of canals and tow-paths to explore, along with ruined abbeys & riverside villages.

90km: The Futuroscope Theme Park is a good day out for older children - with 3D cinemas, simulator rides and an evening sound and light show.

For nature lovers, the area has many attractions - with nature reserves for bird watching, open farms, wild valleys, boat rides through the salt marshes, dragonfly sanctuaries and quiet fishing lakes.

After your day out come 'home' relax in the large cool house with some wonderful French food and wine in the courtyard or inside, watch some English TV, catch up with emails, or meet the locals in one of the bars and restaurants

From the Owner

The house was renovated when first purchased, and is currently laid out as a comfortable 3 bedroom house. Eventually there will be one more bedroom. It is in an ideal location for guests who like to walk to the local bakery or restaurant. There is a fishing lake and park nearby, and the country lanes are great for cycling - passing fields of sunflowers along the way. There is so much to do within a 30 minute drive - lots of beaches, seaside towns, Tropical gardens, adventure parks, and further afield there is the Puy du Fou theme park and Futuroscope, along with the Marais Poitevin network of canals and wetlands.
