Guestbook comments from the owner

~ Our second visit to Les Volets Rouges was every bit as enjoyable as the first. Lots of fun and relaxation in the pool. Looking forward to our 3rd visit. Great hospitality from Mark, Judy, Emma, Matthew & Caillou the yorkie.

PS: We enjoyed playing football with the other family.

~ It was lovely to have both the gîtes and have the whole family together in such lovely surroundings. Thanks Mark for putting the extra tables on the terrace so we could all BBQ together. There was so much room for the kids to run around and the fact that it was all fenced meant that we could relax and watch the children.

Notes on accommodation: Les Volets Rouges which is to say La Forge and La Grange are situated in one of the most scenic areas of the western part of the Loire valley within an area defined as a World Heritage Site. There are masses of interesting visits that can be made using either of these beautifully restored gites as a base. Apart from the surrounding countryside there are many historic buildings and towns to visit. There are many activities available in the area including kayaking. tree-top walks, horse-riding and bicycling. It is also worth mentioning that they are situated in the centre of one of the best wine producing areas of France. Both gites are finished to a very high standard. No expense has been spared to provide the most luxurious experience possible. Each gite has UK television and WIFI. Table linen including swimming towels is always provided. Outside: The two gites share use of a magnificent 12 by 6 metre heated & fenced swimming pool which is opened approximately at the beginning of May through to mid-October. They also have use of a games room with ping-pong table and 'baby foot' table - an excellent place for teenagers to unwind. Les Volets Rouges is set within a hectare of securely fenced land. La Forge has use of a well-fenced mature garden with swings to one side while La Grange has its own private fenced garden. To the west of the two gites is a parkland area where there are wisteria-shaded pergolas with picnic benches where guests sit sipping drinks as the sun sets and where they often enjoy night-time barbecues. For children there is a wild willow Wendy house with is own smaller version of a picnic table and where they can safely hide from the adults. There are swings, climbing ladder, rope, see-saw and slide for them to enjoy. There is also a croquet set.

A fabulous getaway location

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a gite that was conveniently located on the Loire, with enough space for 6 adults and 2 (belatedly 3) babies. It had to offer discrete bedrooms each with its own bathroom to give enough space for us to get away from one another if needed. The existence of a pool was a bonus feature and although I had become used, over the years, to flattering pictures it seemed to be fine.

When we arrived we were all absolutely delighted with the choice I had made and as the week went on we became more and more pleased. The gite was impeccable and it lacked for nothing, even down to sharp knives and bathing towels. There was plenty of space for us all and that extended from the large dining area to the comfortable arm chairs and settees available, as well as the bedrooms.

The heated pool was wonderful and at 12 metres in length was much, much larger than we had expected and also featured cushions for the reclining sun beds as well as parasols. The attention to detail was remarkable and there always seemed to be something new to discover in the games room or the grounds which our two year old granddaughter was happy to explore.

Mark and Judy were wonderful hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them so that when one son-in-law had to leave unexpectedly taking with him a vital i-pad lead, they helped us plan how to get him to Paris in a hurry and found a replacement lead that kept Peppa Pig on line! They also helped out when one of our cars developed starting problems.

The Loire is a great place to visit for its history, its food and its wine and our hosts made sure that we visited one winemaker who was new to us and had enough to interest the children so that tasting the wine was as easy as possible. Their enthusiastic recommendation about visiting the Bioparc, south of Saumur, was also spot on and enjoyed by us all, even the zoo sceptic amongst us.

Allones itself has two great bakers and a perfectly reasonable mini supermarket so that there is little need to go elsewhere in order to eat or barbecue at the gite. Bourgeuil has much more to offer and is a short drive away while Saumur, which is almost as close, has a massive Leclerc hypermarket as well more interesting shops and bars.

My wife and have loved the Loire region for many years and this visit was an opportunity to introduce it to our growing family. They have already wondered about a repeat visit and we can all, without reservation, recommend Les Volets Rouges as the perfect base.

A little gem right in the heart of of the wine making Loire region

  • 5 of 5

The gite was very well presented, and the hosts Judy and Mark welcoming. We've stayed in a number of gites over the years and this one would be high on our list to return to in the future. Everything you need for an enjoyable and comfortable stay with the added bonus of a pool. In the countryside but within 5 minutes of Allonnes with its facilities including a very good supermarket. Plenty of opportunity for cycling and walking in the beautiful countryside.

Excellant pace for a very relaxing hoiday

  • 5 of 5

We went along wih son, daughter-in-law and two young grandsons. The accomodation was fantastic and very comfortable. The pool was excellant and we had close on sole use of it, much to the boys' delight. Mark and Judy are ideal hosts; ensuring we had everything we needed without being over intrusive. Mark's wine tasting was well chsen and displayed grea local knowledge. A anrtastic holiday which we look to repeat.

Enjoyable holiday in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

Mark and Judy were very helpful and friendly owners that made you feel comfortable and welcome in their property. We visited "out of season" in October, but there was still plenty to do in the area. We enjoyed cycling the path along the Loire river, and visiting the many chateaux and charming towns in the area. It was also fascinating to visit the vineyards, and taste the wine they produced.Quite perfect!

Owner's Response: We are both really glad to hear how much you enjoyed your autumn break. It is really the most beautiful time of year here with all the trees beginning to change colour. It is a calm period after the storm of the summer and the pace of life returns to normal. All the main attractions remain open only there are many less tourists at this time making visits a more comfortable proposition. We are very fortunate to have such kind and appreciative guests.

Five Stars For La Forge

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic gite in a wonderful edge of village location. Handy for local amenities and for all major attractions around and about. It is little wonder that a lot of Mark & Judy's business comes from repeat custom- highly recommended !

Owner's Response: We are really pleased to see from your review how much you enjoyed yourselves here. It was a real pleasure to meet you both, as well as, of course, your fine, well-behaved dogs. It is always a pleasure to have such a positive response from dog-owners. The separate fenced and enclosed gardens with their automatic gates make having dogs here a practical proposition and we are pleased to see you take good advantage of the huge range of wonderful walks that surround the property. Our Yorkie – Caillou – still spends much of his day playing with the toy you kindly gave him!! We are grateful you appreciated the high standard we have aimed for in the gîtes. Our own experience in years past of staying in substandard accommodation furnished with musty caste-offs convinced us that a different mentality was required – one which placed the emphasis on providing the best possible experience for guests – hence also the large heated pool. We are very fortunate to have gîtes in an area that provides so much in the way of attractions. It is good to know how much you enjoyed Saumur with its quirky architecture and we hope to have the pleasure of you visiting us again in the future.

Lovely stay in a beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

Judy and Mark really do provide an excellent service. They are friendly but not intrusive. The pool was the highlight for our children as was the vast amount of space for them to play. The gites included everything we needed (although a sofa in la forge would have been ideal rather than individual chairs). The location of the gites was perfect for us to explore the area and see various sites. Thank you both for a fantastic week. We hope to come back in the future! Regards Laura and family
