About the property

Cottage in Mevagissey, Cornwall, England - Peaceful Location, 5 Minute Walk To The Coast And Quaint Picturesque Harbour Town Of Mevagissey

Mevagissey is one of the few remaining active Cornish fishing harbours. In the small town you can enjoy the local shops, boutiques, and art galleries. There are cafes, pubs and restaurants, as well as places to stop for a cream tea, fish and chips or an ice-cream. There is even a handmade fudge shop! A visit to the museum and aquarium on the harbour is recommended. Freshly caught fish are often available to buy from the quayside. There are many walks that can be enjoyed from the cottage, but most popular are those along the coastal path leading from the harbour. Mevagissey is fortunate to have a cycle path that meanders to St. Austell and beyond and has a ferry to take you to Fowey. There are a great variety of activities to suit all interests. Fishing trips and scenic boat trips are available from the harbour. If you enjoy watersports or a day out at the seaside, sandy beaches are close by. For garden enthusiasts many popular attractions are within easy reach, including; The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Caerhays Castle, The Eden Project. There are several National Trust properties. If you are interested in popular culture you will enjoy a visit to the nearby 18th century harbour village of Charlestown. One of Britain's most popular film locations, it was used in The Eagle Has Landed and most recently the new Poldark series and in many others in between.

About Jacqueline Wedlake Hatton

I was born about 10 miles from Mevagissey and have fond childhood memories of skipping through the streets and eating ice-cream whilst sitting on the rocks near the harbour. As an adult I studied art at Falmouth and remain inspired by the familiar landscapes of the south west. These days I eat less ice cream and run through the hilly streets in my attempts to stay fit. I love how Cornwall with her tides and unpredictable weather reveals herself serendipitously to those who take the time to explore. For example, during a recent walk I stumbled upon the wreck of the 'Romanie', believed to be the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca'. I hope that if you come to stay at Chorister's Cottage you and your party will take away with you equally fond and inspiring memories.

Why Jacqueline Wedlake Hatton chose Mevagissey

Having grown up in the St.Austell area I am delighted to now have my own home here once again. Mevagissey, in my opinion, is one of the few Cornish fishing towns to still retain its integrity as such and seems little changed since my childhood. My criteria for a second home was to be within walking distance of the sea and a pub or restaurant in this part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Also I wanted easy access to the South West Coast Path. Parking was important as having the convenience of my own car to explore Cornwall and visit friends and family when here is essential. Finally I wanted a comfortable and cosy home with a real fire and a traditional feel; Chorister's Cottage ticks all of those boxes. I look forward to sharing this beautiful part of Cornwall with you.

What makes this cottage unique

In addition to the accommodation inside the cottage there is a delightful garden area at the front which gets the sun for most of the day. Being tucked away behind the old St.Peter's Church, this is a quiet and peaceful setting. The tranquillity of this hidden corner of Mevagissey contrasts with the activity and bustle of the beautiful harbour, yet it is less than a five minute, relatively level walk away. I am a romantic at heart and so the subtle details like the unmistakeable cries of the seagulls and being regaled by the birdsong of numerous other feathered species during my stays here is a joy. In addition, at night time there is usually an owl hooting, bats flitting about the street lamps and when the sky is clear those endless stars never fail to delight me.

Lovely cottage, great position and setting

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week. The cottage is just 5 minutes walk from the harbour in Mevagissy on a quiet back road. We took advantage and ate out several evenings - reasonable selection of restaurants and pubs. We also used it as a base to get to Heligan and for coastal walks in both directions. We had a car, but chose to use the local buses, (reliable, if not very frequent !) We also took the boat to Fowey for a fab day out. The cottage was a lovely base - immaculate and beautifully decorated, charming and homely. There were only 2 of us, but the bedrooms were all good sizes, as was the kitchen (well appointed for when we catered at home) and dining room. 6 would be snug in the living room, but lots of comfortable seating. Good outdoor space to sit in the sun of an afternoon. I'd stay here again in the blink of an eye.

Perfect accommodation and location

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely holiday in Mevagissey & enjoyed staying at Choristers Cottage .

The cottage is near to the church , a quiet location in which to relax & yet just a short walk to the beautiful harbour & shops , the cottage is well equipped , very clean & has a lovely little garden & private parking .

Mevagissey offers plenty of places to eat drink & shop .

Perfect Cornish pasties are a must .

The Sharks fin & The Fountain proved to be very hospitable whilst The Wheelhouse do a cracking Full English which is a must before venturing out onto the coastal path .

We were lucky enough to see Grey Seals on a secluded beach near Chapel Point.

Choristers Cottage makes a great base from which to explore the Roseland Peninsula & nearby attractions include The Eden Project & The Lost Gardens of Helligan .

I would definitely stop at Choristers again.

Excellent, homely, well equipped and conveniently located cottage.

  • 4 of 5

"Don't go to Mevagissey, live in Mevagissey"; when you book Chorister's cottage you are booking a delightful well equipped 'home from home' cottage full of tasteful personal touches.

The location is far enough from the harbour to be away from the 'hustle and bustle', yet comfortably close enough to walk into town to see the harbour and eat out in the evenings.

We particularly enjoyed the early morning dog walking circuit around the harbour and eating out in the evening at Number 5, Sharksfin and Salamander.

A trip to Fowey by ferry or car is well worth a visit and we were lucky enough to go there when one of the sea-going RNLI lifeboats had an open day.

There are plenty of coastal walks, gardens and other attractions in the local vicinity to keep you entertained for your visit to this delightful corner of Cornwall.

Really pretty and well presented cottage

  • 5 of 5

Very pleased with our choice of cottage. All the facilities were in excellent condition and the place was ultra clean. Lovely quiet location far enough away from the bustle of the town but close enough for an easy walk in for an evening out.

Everything was in top condition as good as new. Very comfortable beds plus the quiet location meant that we were very refreshed after our weeks stay. Having stayed in very good Hotels all over the world a small but very pleasing feature were the extra thick and fluffy towels. Perhaps an odd observation to some people but it was a really nice touch.

As a side we had a spot of car trouble while in Mevagissy we found a local garage called Paul Eyers in St Austell who fitted us in on the Saturday morning before the August bank holiday and charged under £60 to provide and fit a new alternator belt.
