East Cottage, situated in the ancient and picturesque mid-Somerset village of Croscombe halfway between the mediaeval city of Wells (1½ miles) and the market town of Shepton Mallet (1½ miles), is the perfect holiday home from which to enjoy the many attractions this beautiful area has to offer. This gorgeous cottage, which dates back to the 17th century, has an abundance of period features and traditional English country charm. This is tastefully combined with the provision of all the modern conveniences that you would expect to find in a 5 star cottage. Just like its sister establishments, award-winning School Cottages Bed & Breakfast and School Cottages Self-catering, the standard of the accommodation at East Cottage reflects our very high expectations of quality, cleanliness, attention to detail and service. Our charming holiday cottage is in a beautiful rural location; lots of fresh air, farmland and farm animals with great walks and country pubs on the doorstep - always a good combination for keeping children, and parents (!) amused. The cottage sleeps 4 (plus cots) in two bedrooms comprising 1 with king size double bed, and the other which can either be made up as a super king size double, or with 2 twin single beds. The cottage is therefore ideal for both families with children, or for couples trying to escape them! Children of all ages are welcome at East Cottage. A travel cot is provided (if required), as well as stair-gates and high chair. We provide an essentials baby box - just in case you forget anything - as well as a baby-changing mat and baby bath. There is also toy box and a selection of games, jigsaws, books and DVDs. The cottage has gas central heating and free Wi-Fi. Towels are provided, as well as tea towels, toiletries, quality bed linen and an initial supply of logs for the fire to take the edge off the chilly evenings. We also provide a welcome basket containing tea, coffee, milk, sugar and cake. There are 2 parking spaces for the exclusive use of guests staying at East Cottage in the courtyard to the right of the cottage. Behind the courtyard, a small flight of steps leads to the private garden. The well-established walled garden includes lawned areas, herbaceous borders and a south-facing patio, ideal for ‘al fresco’ dining. We also provide a barbecue and a supply of charcoal. The cottage is about 100 yards walking distance of the village shop, which sells wonderful local produce. By prior arrangement with us they will provide a locally sourced breakfast hamper, containing everything you’ll need to prepare the perfect west country breakfast. The village pub, ‘The George Inn’ is just 150 yards walk from the cottage and offers a friendly welcome, roaring log fires in the winter and relaxing beer garden with children’s area in the warmer months. This CAMRA award winning pub serves quality food prepared from the best fresh, local ingredients, cooked to order. All food is homemade, including the delicious puddings and ice creams. Organic, vegetarian, game and fresh fish specials complement the regular menu. Special needs are catered for too. There is also a great selection of other country pubs nearby serving excellent, locally sourced food, not to mention the vast choice of eateries just a short drive away in Wells or Bath. Our first choice when coming back

After experiencing several cottages during our two weeks travel before we reached this place we felt absolutely comfortable and welcome as we entered this cottage. It took two attempts to find the narrow entrance to the courtyard but then with first look we didn´t want to leave. Quick note: the description said that two parking slots are available in the courtyard but after parking our Passat we haven´t seen any chance to park a second car but the street in-front of the cottage would provide alternatives for parking.

The cottage is very clean, very comfortable with good style furnished. It is small but for four people absolutely sufficient. The highlight is the steep and stone made steps to the 1st floor. The kitchen is separate and the biggest we had so far. Very well equipped and our ladies enjoyed cooking in it. A nice courtesy are the high quality brochures and guiding books of the area. The sleeping rooms are under the roof and also very nice equipped and a worm welcome to go to bed – in one bedroom we found also box spring mattress providing us a very good comfort.

The location is really well located to visit Bristol and Bath as well. The location is in a valley with not much sunlight and the main street is right in-front but the house provides are very good sound protection that we haven´t heard much from the cars.

As said above, we were very sad that we had to leave this cottage as our vacation was coming to an end. If you are looking for a cottage to explore this area we highly recommend this cottage to have a very comfortable and nice stay – we definitely keep this address in our notes when we come back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for this lovely review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay at East Cottage and hope you won't mind me adding my comments to your review. You are right there are 2 parking spaces at East Cottage but if you have 2 larger vehicles there is always the option to park one of them on the very quiet street opposite. The original stone staircase which winds around the back of the inglenook fireplace and leads up to the first floor is indeed a beautiful feature. However I would like to reassure future guests that it is not too steep and there is a strong handrail for anyone needing a bit of extra help. For families with small children, rest assured stair-gates are available which can be positioned at the top and bottom of the stairs. I am glad you liked the bedrooms. Our comfortable beds are pocket sprung and adorned with high quality bed lined. The location is great. Croscombe, which lies between Wells and Shepton Mallet is a beautiful village with a great village pub and shop. It is in a valley but there is still plenty of sunlight! The spacious living room is lovely and light with windows on 3 sides. The south-facing patio area in the garden is an absolute sun-trap and also completely private. The garden also has a lawned area ideal for children to play as well as a shady pergola area. Thank you again for staying with us and hope to welcome you back one day.

East Cottage is just what we wanted. A lovely characterful cottage, fully modernised, with an excellent private garden. It had everything we needed, combined with its historic charm, and is an excellent base to explore the area. Real attention to detail too - and thanks for our welcome pack. Five star!

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Bookings
A 50% deposit is paid upon booking. The balance is due 1 month prior to arrival. All deposits are non-refundable.
We also require credit card details prior to arrival in lieu of a cautionary deposit.
Arrival Times
Access to the cottage is from 4pm.
Departure Times
We require the cottage to be vacated by 10.00am on the day of departure.
Cancellation
In the event of a cancellation, we will endeavour to re-let the cottage. If we re-let the cottage we will refund monies paid less the deposit, which is non-returnable and non-transferable.
Damage
In the event of damage to the property, we reserve the right to charge to replace, repair or professionally clean the item concerned. There will be a charge of £15.00 for lost keys.
Hirer’s Responsibilities
The hirer is responsible for the property and is expected to take all reasonable care of it. The hirer undertakes to leave the cottage, furniture and equipment clean and tidy at the end of the hire period.
Non-Smoking Policy
In the interest of comfort and safety of our guests, we operate a strict non-smoking policy. In the event of non-compliance, guests will be asked to leave without a refund. A charge of £100 may also be levied for professional cleaning.
Number of Guests
The maximum number of guests (excluding cots) is four people.
Visitors
Visitors are welcome but please note that there are only two parking spaces allocated for the cottage.
Liability
The cottage and grounds are used entirely at guests’ own risk. No responsibility is accepted for loss or damage to guests’ own property. Parking is at guests’ own risk.
We reserve the right to decline accommodation and to demand immediate withdrawal of any persons behaving in a manner detrimental to the property or the comfort or safety of guests.
In the event that we are unable to providethe cottage as stated, liability is restricted to the return of all monies paid.
Pets
We do do not allow pets at East Cottage.
VAT
We do not charge VAT.
