Welcome to Intake Cottage and Swallows Byre in Swaledale.

Intake Cottage is beautifully situated between the villages of Low Row and Gunnerside in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A classic example of an 18th Century Dales country cottage and part of an original farmhouse. It was originally used by the current owners as a World War II retreat. Since then the Kent’s have been refurbishing and maintaining, holidaying and letting Intake Cottage for over 35 years.

Intake Cottage is south facing and has a lovely country garden that enjoys panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dale and the river Swale (old English for ‘the wild one’) running a stone throws away. Swaledale is renowned for its wild flower meadows, sheep, dry stone walls, hay and cattle barns, lead-mining ruins and its fast flowing river.

Intake Cottage is an ideal location for walking, cycling, sightseeing, trout fishing, painting or just relaxing.

Living Room/Dining Room

Intake Cottage is an archetypal country cottage oozing character from the beamed ceiling, flag stone floors and 18th Century cast iron fire place. It’s appropriately furnished throughout with a mixture of antiques and quality soft furnishings providing a home from home feeling, perfect for relaxing in front of the fire.

Kitchen

The renovated shaker style kitchen is a country cooks treat with traditional Belfast sink and original stone pantry shelves.

Bedrooms:

Master Bedroom

The Master bedroom has wonderful views across the Dale and contains a double bed, wardrobe and dressing table.

Second Bedroom

The second bedroom also has glorious south facing views and is approached through the Master bedroom and has a 3ft single bed with pull out underneath, wardrobe and chest of drawers.

All bedding is provided along with towels and tea towels. Electric blankets are available for winter months. The cottage has full electricity which runs on a £1 coin operated meter, the first £5.00 of which is included in the rent along with all coal.

Bathroom

Small, well equipped and just off the Master bedroom.

Outside

At the front of the cottage is a raised south-facing garden overlooking a wild flower meadow down to the river Swale. A patio terrace with garden furniture and barbeque is ideal for alfresco dining should the weather permit. If not, there is our so called ‘Hobby’ (summerhouse) in which to sit, ideal for watching all the wildlife or reading away from any blustery weather.

Swallows Byre

Situated over the garden wall to the west of Intake Cottage, Swallows Byre retains the same beautiful south facing views. This conversion incorporates the best of old and new design using the compact space with maximum natural light encompassing quality tasteful furnishings and having central heating.

Swallows Byre is situated over the garden wall to the west of Intake Cottage, retaining the same beautiful South facing views, with the river Swale below. This conversion incorporates the best of both old and new design, quality tasteful furnishings, plus central heating and some underfloor heating. This unique Byre offers reversed accommodation to maximise the panoramic views, having the living room and roof terrace on the upper floor. The kitchen, bedroom and bathroom are on the lower floor. The Byre has it's own terrace garden, summerhouse and small BBQ. Swallows Byre is located 1 mile West of Low Row, on the route of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart. Sorry, no pets, or smoking allowed.

We have stayed in many places over the years in Swaledale. None have been bad. Most have been good, one or two have been great. Swallows Byre has been exceptional. Swaledale never changes - not really - which is its ultimate attraction. It is still marvellous that there is little or no mobile signal, just a shame there is now wifi, Aaaargh. Love it, love it ,love it and we'll be back.

Thank you Dorothy and Nigel for sharing your charming home. We have so enjoyed the comfort of your very tastefully furnished cottage. It will be a joy to return in a different season to experience the delights of Swaledale again.

Swallows Byre

Had a really enjoyable stay at Swallow Byre. Dorothy met me at the property on my arrival and was very helpful and friendly. The place was ideally situated for a week of walking, with a short walk across the fields down to the river and then walking in either direction from there leading to some great walks. I only used the car once throughout my stay and that was only because it was raining! The cottage itself was very well kept and comfortable. Although I ate in I can certainly recommend the Kings head in Gunnerside and the Black Bull in Reeth for a drink. Would definitely stay there again if I was in the area.

Swallows Byre , Swaledale

This was our Second stay at the beautiful Swallows Byre . We love everything about it! Equipped to a high standard . More than a holiday cottage it has so many personal touches of luxury it feels like home. Spotless with attention to detail. The antique double bed is the most comfortable weve ever slept in! The kitchen is small but we manage to bake bread and cook wonderful meals . The bathroom has a freestanding bath with soft fluffy towels and has a super warm heated towel rail. Underfloor heating too keeps everything cozy. Its an upside down cottage with the sitting room upstairs stunning views over the valley to the river. I cannot stress the beautiful views enough from upstairs as well as down where you lie in bed watching the river tumble over the rocks . The sitting room has a balcony and is brilliant for bird watching. The log burner is a real treat in the winter evenings. We love it here and enjoyed staying in intake cottage too. The outside space is wonderful too! The summer house being one of our favorite places to do the crossword . Dorothy is a fantastic host making sure your stay is a comfortable one . We have already booked our 3rd visit in a year and are about to book a week for our son and daughter in laws anniversary gift too. There is so much choice of places to go nearby ... Thats if you can bear to leave Swallows Byre!

Special interest holidays:

Many of the local walks and mountain bike routes start literally at your doorstep, several of which are depicted in the guidebooks at the cottage.

Very close to Intake Cottage is Low Row, home of the Punch Bowl Inn, serving good food and traditional ale. . Five miles east of Intake Cottage is the so called capital of upper Swaledale, Reeth, having local craft studios, tea rooms, café/restaurants, pubs, museum and tourist information. If peace and quiet is what you are looking for, then you probably don’t need to move from Intake cottage itself.

Distances:

Low Row is 1 mile, Reeth is 5 miles, Richmond is 15 miles . Leyburn, Hawes. Barnard Castle all about 30 mins drive away.

Further Details:

30 Minutes East

Here you will find the Georgian market town of Richmond with its castle, museum, Georgian Theatre and the old ‘station’ - housing a café, deli’s, art exhibits and two cinemas.

30 Minutes North

Here you will find Barnard Castle, famous for it’s Bowes Museum, which is an international venue for art exhibitions and has numerous different ones throughout the year. Also close by is Egglestone Abbey and Raby Castle.

30 Minutes South

Over the ‘Buttertubs Pass‘’ is the market town of Hawes in Wensleydale where the famous Wensleydale cheese is made. Also in this dale are Bolton Castle and the thriving market town of Leyburn.
