Updated: 26-Nov-2016
Cottages in Low Row, Swaledale, Yorkshire, England - Swallows Byre (self contained Annex to Intake Cottage) Tasteful conversion & fantastic views

Welcome to Intake Cottage and Swallows Byre in Swaledale.

Intake Cottage is beautifully situated between the villages of Low Row and Gunnerside in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A classic example of an 18th Century Dales country cottage and part of an original farmhouse. It was originally used by the current owners as a World War II retreat. Since then the Kent’s have been refurbishing and maintaining, holidaying and letting Intake Cottage for over 35 years.

Intake Cottage is south facing and has a lovely country garden that enjoys panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dale and the river Swale (old English for ‘the wild one’) running a stone throws away. Swaledale is renowned for its wild flower meadows, sheep, dry stone walls, hay and cattle barns, lead-mining ruins and its fast flowing river.

Cosy Retreat in the Dales

  • 4 of 5

Arriving to a beautiful hearth on a cold half term. It was a great place to get away from it all and enjoy the dales.

Cozy Intake Cottage in Swaledale

  • 4 of 5

Absolutely fantastic week in Swaledale at the cozy intake cottage at low row. Hardly left the cottage as the views are spectacular . Loved sitting in the garden and summerhouse. Enjoyed cooking and baking in the kitchen. Had a roaring fire in the evenings bliss. Snug in the pretty bedroom with the electric blanket warming the bed. Booked again for october staying in the ajacent swallows byre . Cant wait! Mrs Kent is very welcoming and you have everything you need in this spotlessly clean cottage.

A sparkling gem in a flowering bed of tranquility!

  • 5 of 5

This was not my first and will not be my last visit. Swallows Byre is a beautiful little oasis of tranquility surrounded by stunning scenery and a gorgeous country kitchen style garden. 'She' is peaceful inside and out. I work as a paramedic and whether I need time out from the rat race or a place to study (the summer house is perfect for this!), there is nowhere I would rather be. The only noisy neighbour you may encounter is the cheeky cock-pheasant who greets you every evening with a peck on the upstairs patio window! Swallows Byre is cosy, comfortable, tastefully decorated and contains all you could need for a quiet, romantic break away. She is so lovely that it is difficult to tear yourself away to explore the surrounding countryside.

Absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5

Intake Cottage is a wonderful base from which to explore Swaledale, and the perfect retreat in wet weather - cosy and supplied with everything you might need. It looks out over a field - full of lambs when I was there in May - and then the river Swale beyond. There are lovely walks directly from the cottage. The owners, Dorothy and Nigel, were extremely welcoming. I very much appreciated their tip about the fish-and-chip van that passes the cottage at about 7.15 on a Friday evening - truly delicious fish and chips!
