Comprising two completely independent Gites, which are available to rent individually or together, (Le Pommier - sleeps 6 and Le Cerisier - sleeps 5), which offers the ideal solution for an extended family or two families who want to spend their holiday together but still want to retain their independence and some private space. Situated at either end of a converted hay-barn, the gites have been sympathetically converted to retain their former charm whilst incorporating modern comfort and convenience. Le Pommier has three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the ground floor and a large open-plan 1st floor living space with doors to an elevated balcony which has stunning southerly views over the rolling countryside. Le Cerisier has a ground floor living room and separate kitchen/dining room and two en-suite bedrooms on the first floor. Both gites have external patio space with furniture and each had its own gas BBQ (gas supplied).
Situated in the eastern Charente, close to the Dordogne and Limousin borders, the property is situated 15 mins east of La Rochefoucauld and 20 mins SW of Rochechouart - each town boasting a stunning, but strikingly different, chateau. The lakes of the high Charente, with beaches, cycling and walking trails are an easy 15 minute drive away and there are numerous weekly local markets in the nearby towns and villages. To the west, the world-renowned town of Cognac is less than an hour away and to the east the famous city of Limoges can be reached in a similar time. For the more adventurous, the historic city of La Rochelle is less than two hours away, as are the long and sweeping beaches of the Bay of Biscay. Recently converted from a haybarn, The Gites occupy an elevated position and are south facing, meaning day-long sunshine, with stunning views over the Charente countryside! Both Gites have been furnished to the highest standards and both benefit form HD UK satellite TV. The very large garden in front of The Gites is mostly laid to grass with ample room for games - mini football goals, a volleyball/badminton net, croquet lawn and Boules piste are provided. There is also a small, recently planted orchard with a variety of fruit trees. To the west side of the property is the large (13m x 6m) heated swimming pool which is overlooked by the shady Summer Terrace. The Summer Terrace is equipped with tables, chairs, hammock, sofa, i-pod docking station, dart board, Table Football table and fridge and is the ideal place for parents to relax whist still being able to supervise their children in the pool. Next to the Summer Terrace is a dedicated Table Tennis area. The well equipped gym and four-person sauna can also be found close by.
The owners of 'The Gites at Le Tilleul', Les and Sara Henderson moved to France in 2010 with their two children Georgia and Angus. Les had been a military helicopter pilot and fixed-wing flying instructor prior to completing eight years as a Commercial airline pilot and Sara, although a qualified Primary School teacher, had also been a Royal Navy Air Traffic Control Officer. After leaving the Services they successfully started-up and ran the European operation for a Canadian company, which manufactured and sold soft leather baby shoes, from their home in South Wales from 2001 to 2010. During this time they successfully renovated a small barn in the grounds of their old farmhouse, which they subsequently rented out as a 'holiday let', and the idea of pursuing this idea on a slightly larger scale ultimately led to the move to France in 2010.
Les Henderson purchased this barn in 2010
We wanted somewhere which was tranquil and had lots of space. We also wanted the arrangement of the buildings to be such that both ourselves and our guests could enjoy the property without compromising the privacy of either party - we wanted to be available for our guests if they needed help or advice but at the same time, to be discreet. We wanted our guests to feel completely at home and not to feel that they were restricted by the fact that we (the owners) were nearby. I'm glad to say that from the feedback from our previous guests, we have achieved our aim!
The views here are stunning! The property is south facing which means that in summer the sun shines on us all day long! In short, it is an idyllic setting! The summer days are long and sultry and the pool is a joy to dive into to cool off. At Le Tilleul, the amenities are such that some of our guests only go out to buy groceries! Their time is spent relaxing by the pool, spending quality time with their children playing games in the Summer Terrace, or in the wide open spaces of the garden.
Others take the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside or the many and varied activities which are available nearby, returning in the afternoon for some pool time and a relaxing evening BBQ! Whether it's French culture or fun activities you're seeking - Le Tilleul provides it all and there's something here for everyone!
“Fantastic comfortable holiday, highly recommended. Truly delightful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013 for a stay in July 2013
The place is lovely, the gites are very tastefully renovated and comfortable. There were 7 of us, aged from 13-76 and there was more than enough room with the beautiful big (soon to be heated) pool, shady summer terrace with hammock, shaded terrace outside the gites, gym, large playing area for football, badminton, boule, table tennis; everyone had as much space as they could want.
Les and Sara are delightful; as discreet or as sociable as you want; very generous with fresh eggs and produce, and could not have been more welcoming or friendly. They did everything possible to make our stay perfect; nothing was too much trouble.
There are 2 supermarkets within about 20 minutes drive; one of them open Sunday mornings. There is a good high ropes course within 15 minutes drive; a great day out for the whole family. Limoges airport is a delightful 45-60 min

We arrived at the property on a Sat in July and sometimes first impressions do count! The owners were lovely and friendly, the grounds were well maintained, the pool was clean and huge and the gite absolutely gorgeous.
Everything inside the gite was of the best quality, the towels, bed linen, kitchen equipment etc and it was spotlessly clean. There was also an amazing welcome pack including cheese, jam, wine, bread, butter etc, what a treat!
The owners were fabulous, attentive but not too much but you always knew that they were there if you needed anything. The fact that at most you only share with one other family was something luxurious for us and it meant more often than not we had the pool and the garden to ourselves.
This was definitely near the top of our budget but was it worth it, yes definitely, we would not hesitate to recommend these gites to our friends and family.
There is only one slight downside and for us that was that a lot of the days out for instance a zoo, were about 1-2 hours drive away which for us seemed like a long drive. However there was so much to do in the grounds that we didn't really venture far.
Thanks Les and Sara for a fabulous holiday - we're still talking about it!!
We had a wonderful fortnight at Le Tilleul. The accommodation was excellent - three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the ground floor and a very large open plan living space on the first floor with balcony overlooking the peaceful countryside. The quality of the accommodation was extremely high, with all facilities available and maintained to a high standard. In the grounds, there is a very good swimming pool and an array of other attractions including trampoline, boules court, children's play area, outside bar, badminton, table tennis etc. There are a number of interesting places to visit nearby, notably La Rochefoucauld and Angouleme, and the countryside around the property is excellent for walking. As usual in France, there are many good opportunities for eating out extremely well at varying prices. Les and Sara are thoughtful and welcoming hosts who are always available to answer questions and meet any needs, but otherwise happy to leave guests to enjoy their holiday in peace. The weather for our stay was generally good with a number of very hot days, although inevitably given its location there were a couple of wet days. We shall definitely be coming back.
We stayed in the larger of the gites which was just gorgeous. Les and Sara had left a wonderful welcome basket of eggs, bread and jam and a bottle of wine, most unexpected. The gite was spacious, spotless, beautifully furnished with top quality appliances and everything you could possibly need. The heated pool, was in a sheltered spot with lovely loungers and toys for the kids, our two boys were never bored. There is so much for everyone to do there, rain or shine. Best of all was the stunning view over the fields and the total peace. We did not want to leave! We would not hesitate to go back.
This gite had everything you could possibly want. Well appointed with good quality appliances and furnishings. A choice of 4 eating areas to cover all weather eventualities. A heated swimming pool that you can swim in, or just lounge around in the sun, or under shade should you want it. Catering for all ages, including, children toddlers to teens. The owners living on site are friendly and knowledgeable regarding places to visit, restaurants' to frequent. They have thought of everything you might need. We wanted for nothing - even a petanque referee! Well worth a visit, highly recommended!
What a wonderful place to stay! Beautifully and sympathetically restored property with quality furniture and fittings in an absolutely lovely location; owned and run by a lovely family who can't do enough to please. I am unable to drive, due to failing eyesight, and as a special treat, to allow my husband to have a drink with a meal for a change Les offered to act as our chauffeur for the night. Sara gave us a couple of Auberge to choose from, printed off the menus, and made the booking. They have balance just right, there for you but never obtrusive in any way. We were provided with cherries ( Les Cerisier) from their own trees and eggs from the, very entertaining, chickens!! From the minute we arrived to a warm welcome and a very generous welcome pack, including Georgia's lovely home made cake, until we left, we felt like valued visitors. Good wifi, English channels, copious amounts of hot water, good showers. Adam, our 15 yr old, loved having the gym for his daily workout, we were blessed with glorious weather and, so, made good use of all the games eg boules, croquet, badminton, table tennis but for me the pool was the piece de resistance and was used every day. It is a good size, in a lovely spot, surrounded by countryside and birdsong with sunbeds enough for all. Brantome is a must for a visit with beautiful buildings and many very reasonable restaurants for a kir, wine or a nice cold beer and a meal overlooking the river. Nearby, the velo-rail was entertaining but choose the shorter route, we cycled from Confolens to Manot. The local market at Piegut- Pluviers was great fun with loads of local produce and wines rather than the usual market tat. If we hadn't already booked our holiday for this summer we would have tried to book again. You get what you pay for and we would recommend to our family and friends without hesitation.
Beautiful setting, lots to keep the children occupied. The heated pool was fantastic, Le Pommerie gite was excellent providing everything you would have at home and then some.
Very relaxing and comfortable location near to Rochefoucauld a pretty town with its own Chateau well worth a visit just to dress up in costumes and have some fun.
Would recommend Chez Steph restaurant the steak and frites are amazing, but don't go if you like well done they won't do it !
The owners are lovely and very helpful. We had a great time and would highly recommend this place.
