About Fiona Hingston

The owners, Patrick and Fiona have lived in the village of West Horrington for over thirty years - they obviously love the place! Kingdom Cottage is situated in what was the bottom of their garden.

Whilst they are happy to help and advise in what ever capacity they also respect the privacy of the guests staying at Kingdom Cottage. (pictured - Gus our friendly lurcher)

A lovely quite spot within easy reach of so many great places

  • 5 of 5

Whilst relatively new the cottage is furnished in such a way to make it feel cosy and homely.

We loved the views from the bedrooms, the little reading area as you come in, and the general sense of space and light.

Kitchen was wonderfully equipped, maybe a few champagne glasses wouldn't go a miss but I'm being picky.

In summary, highly recommended and I'm sure the garden adds another dimension in the summer

A beautifully resourced and maintained property with delightful garden. Ideal for access to Wells.

  • 5 of 5

We received a warm welcome from hosts who helped us in with luggage and left necessary items for us like milk/tea etc and had even baked us a sponge cake! The village was quiet (apart from birdsong) with lovely views. A cafe has just opened in the village on the site of an old cheese factory and this was a great place for brunch/afternoon tea etc. No other shops, but Wells only 4 miles away, on a bus route too, with 4 supermarkets on it's ring-road.

The cottage was spacious, beautifully appointed, plenty of natural light and the beds very comfortable. However, not having sat nav it was difficult to find -not the village itself but the cottage -and we had to ask a friendly post-man. Friends who came to visit had the same problem, so it wasn't just us!

Having said that, we would strongly commend it to others and would go there again ourselves if in that part of the world.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and your kind recommendation. Glad you enjoyed our new cafe which is a great addition to our village. I do send out a drawn map to guests showing the position of cottage (I'm wondering if you received this information?) as I appreciate that in a small village with no road signs and without the map or sat nav - or friendly postman - it might take awhile to find.

Very nice village home

  • 4 of 5

We unexpectedly arrived late at night amidst serious fog and a drizzly mist. This home is set in the middle of a tight little walled village. We'd been told to be sure not to use any of the neighbors driveway to enter the property and park the car. It was very dark and difficult to tell which home was the one we were looking for. You actually enter from the back so the only view I'd seen in the pictures wasn't the one I was now seeing. And the key was to have been by a rear window but we found one on a side window. It was all a bit unnerving and frustrating. But we did finally get inside. It's a very nice house, entering into a small living/reading room with a bathroom and the kitchen and family room ahead. Lovely kitchen. Stairs to 3 bedrooms upstairs, one with an ensuite bath and another bath to be shared by two of the bedrooms. Nice linens and all very clean. There was a tea cake which we didn't spot until our last morning as we left. And some milk. There is no coffee maker which seems an unfortunate decision as you're rather far from a store or restaurant. This was the most sparsely furnished kitchen in terms of items often provided by the owner. No water, a bottle of wine, juice or the aforementioned coffee. So, after arriving 5 hr. late at 11:30pm, we went straight to bed and then got up fairly early and drove the few miles to town to get provisions in the morning. Aside from that, nice sites nearby, including Stonehenge, an hr. away. Good restaurants. Wells is a cute little town with a lovely cathedral. Plenty of space for two couples or a family. Don't hesitate to visit, just arrive in daylight and come with some of your own groceries.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you found Kingdom Cottage satisfactory for your stay in January and I trust you and family enjoyed the rest of your stay in the UK. It was unfortunate that you had such a long and tiring journey from Europe to the cottage, arriving at night and in thick fog. I did, when replying to one of the several emails sent that day include a reminder that the key was on the ledge of the back wall window, adding 'by the bins' to aid their location. The outside light was left on to illuminate the entrance and house sign with additional lamps lit in the house to help make your arrival easier. The map sent to guests shows the layout of the parking in relation to the house but learning from your experience I will add a photo of the parking bay to my listing. Your final email of the day arrived at 1am and concerned the absence of a coffee maker and wifi. My partner called in first thing next morning to point out the wifi password sign on kitchen wall. (The password is also now available in the guest information book.) A coffee machine is not listed as available on our Owners Direct listing – cafetieres however, are provided. A customary welcome tray was left on the kitchen table with cake, tea, sugar and a pint of milk in the fridge. To provide complimentary wine, coffee, bottled water and orange juice would mean raising rental rates which I don’t want to do and this is after all, a ‘self catering’ cottage. And just to clarify, so readers are not mislead about our location, the nearest shop is less than a mile away, the nearest pub half a mile and Stonehenge is two hours away, not one.

Exceptional cottage in a tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

We received a warm welcome on arrival and we're delighted with a surprise bonus of cake, cookies, milk in the fridge and fresh garden flowers on the kitchen windowsill. Kingdom cottage is beautiful, tastefully furnished with excellent attention to detail. Everything one would need for a holiday away from home is catered for.I would highly recommend Kingdom cottage for a relaxing holiday in tranquil surroundings. Cheddar Gorge , Wookey Hole, Stonehenge, Bath are some of the places we enjoyed during our stay all worth a visit.

Rural cottage par excellence.

  • 5 of 5

This is the ideal country cottage. Immaculately clean, everything up to six people could possibly need supplied. We spent three nights with our daughter and son-in-law from Australia, and his parents and had a truly wonderful stay. The owners were charming and unfailingly helpful with information and advice about the beautiful surrounding area.

Within easy reach of Bath, Wells, Cheddar and other local places of interest. Good pubs and restaurants in Wells, only five minutes drive away and pretty villages round almost every corner.

Further Details:

A walk to the end of the village will reward the visitor with a view of Biddlecombe, a wooded valley with a meandering stream that flows down to feed the pools in the Bishops Palace. There are plenty of other walks to enjoy here too: take the path that leads across the fields to Wells or follow the stream and find the Buddle House which was once used for lead mining.

The city of Wells is two miles away, with its magnificent Cathedral and the delightful moated Bishops Palace and garden. The city has a market on Wednesday and Saturday and a choice of pubs and restaurants for wining and dining.

For a more 'alternative' shopping experience Glastonbury is the place to visit. Now known worldwide for its Festival, Glastonbury is also home to the Rural Life Museum and Abbey and a visit would not be complete without a walk up the Tor for panoramic views of the Somerset Levels. During the winter months the nature reserves on The Levels are where great flocks of starlings gather to roost: a sight that, once seen, is never forgotten.

Other local towns include Frome, with many independent shops and cafes, and Street, famous for Clarks shoes and its retail outlet Clarks Village.

Bath and Bristol are twenty miles away and other places of interest include: Longleat Safari Park, Wookey Hole & Cheddar Caves plus many National Trust properties such as Stourhead and Barrington Court. Stonehenge and Avebury are an hour and a half away.

For those who like walking there are plenty of trails and pathways to be explored on The Mendips and at various RSPB reserves in the area.

There are two golf courses nearby, an indoor swimming pool in Wells and a lovely open air pool in Street.
