About Anna French

Anna is a retired teacher, Robert is retired and is now a Master Gardener volunteer with Garden Organic and is on hand to offer advice about places to visit or walks in the locality. They have lived in Honingham for over 20 years and have enjoyed the slower pace of life. Anna and Robert have welcomed visitors to Kingfishers Retreat for over 8 years. Robert is a keen bird watcher and the garden offers sightings of many different types of birds from kingfishers to red kites.

Anna French purchased this bungalow in 1993

Why Anna French chose Norwich

We bought this property so that Robert could fulfil his ambition of growing his own fruit and vegetables as well as developing a more formal garden. The property is bounded on one side by the River Tud which is very tranquil to watch. Honingham is a small village centrally placed for all the attractions of Norwich and Norfolk. There is a pub/ restaurant a short walk away. The coasts of both north and east Norfolk can be reached within about 50 minutes as well as a number of RSPB and nature reserves.

What makes this bungalow unique

The property is approached from down a long drive with parking directly outside. It is very quiet and spacious being all on one level. The entrance is into a well equipped kitchen diner. The lounge is large and overlooks the main garden, it will easily accommodate the single bed, if required. In the bedroom there is both a king sized bed and a single bed to choose from. The bathroom has both a large shower and a separate bath. There is a private patio and full use of the owners garden. We have aimed to make Kingfishers Retreat somewhere we would like to go to our selves.

The property is close to a number of golf courses, with Barnham Broom 10 minutes drive away. There are both coarse and trout fishing lakes nearby. There are cycle routes in the locality including Marriots Way.

Very comfortable, spacious, well equipped, tranquil and ideally located to explore Norfolk

  • 5 of 5

The bungalow is very comfortable, spacious and well equipped, with restful views of the tranquil garden (which is a haven for wildlife) from both the kitchen and lounge. The bird song was a real joy. The quiet village is blessed with an excellent pub/restaurant, within a short walk, and it is difficult to think that the main road (A47) between Deerham and Norwich once went through this peaceful village.

The binder full of information about the bungalow and potential places to visit, plus numerous leaflets and National Trust handbook, were a great help in planning our holiday and very much appreciated. Sadly we only managed to visit a fraction of the places on our list and will have to return in the future.

Norfolk has so much to offer for everyone and Kingfisher’s Rest is ideally located for exploring the county. Norwich, which is only a bus or park & ride away, is a real gem and we can recommend the city walks and the Anglican Cathedral, complete with cloisters, is well worth a visit. Not to mention the beautiful coastline and a wealth of gardens, historic houses, coastal and inland nature reserves, market towns and villages, etc.

We have no hesitation in recommending Kingfisher’s Rest. Thank you so much Anna and Robert for a very comfortable and enjoyable stay, and your excellent help and guidance.

Perfect in every way - everything you could need and more!

  • 5 of 5

From the second we arrived in the village and saw the peacock walking down the road and the library phone box we loved the place. It is ideally situated near the A47 for access to many places to visit and very close to shopping facilities which is ideal. However, if you wish to stay at home then you just need to sit in the living room and look out the window at the wonderful garden and the nature going past, it was amazing and my daughter loved it. The river at the end of the garden was beautiful and the peacefulness of the bungalow is perfect. You have everything there you need and more, for the price Anna and Robert provide everything you could want to make your stay comfortable and more. It was immaculate and clean. The books, games and other little items there to make your stay enjoyable just added to the pleasure and Anna and Roberts knowledge of the area was always helpful. We would love to go back!

Another great time in Norfolk

  • 5 of 5

For our nth holiday in East Anglia we stayed at Kingfishers' Retreat from April 30 to May 8. As the name implies it is a retreat but far from being secluded and one of its assets is the perfect location for exploring Norfolk: the A47 is close by, Norwich is just around the corner and thus we managed to go to the places we had planned to visit - Hindringham Gardens, Oxburgh Hall, Felbrigg Hall (all within a 45km radius).

The bungalow is very spacious and comfortable. It is also warm, quiet and very well-equipped. We enjoyed the big kitchen -not only a place to cook but also to have meals- as well as the restful view on the garden from the lounge. It is great to have access to this haven of peace and see what Robert is magicking in his greenhouses and vegetable patches! And what a pleasure to discover the quietly flowing Tud at the back!

When we travel to Britain we enjoy meeting local people so it was very pleasant to have the owners next door. Anna and Robert are very friendly and helpful hosts and we thank them for the pleasant and informative conversations ( tips about local garden centres for instance), the use of the garden, the rhubarb and the apple-juice.

We would have no hesitation to recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet time "away from it all".

Kingfisher Retreat, Horningham Norfolk

  • 5 of 5

We are new to holiday lets, as we were avid caravanners, coach/hotel holidays, but now like our freedom and comfort of holiday lets. Kingfisher retreat is very spacious and comfortable, its location is very quiet and is central to Norfolk and North Sussex. The whole bungalow makes you want to relax and unwind. We only achieved half of what we wanted to visit, so much choice. Robert and Anna are brilliant hostes, with Roberts encyclopaedic , knowledge of the Norfolk and the fantastic range of information and tourist information leaflets in the bungalow, we were spoilt for choice. The garden outlook is like looking at a mini stately home garden, with its lawns, veg patch, orchard (the apples, Robert gave us were so tasty) and the wild life visiting or passing through the garden was mesmerising. Our next visit needs to be a two week stay, so that we get to see, what we have missed up till now. Gordon & Chris Sept 5th – 12th 2015

Further Details:

Norwich is the most complete medieval city in England and has a Romanesque Cathedral and its own Norman Castle. It has many cosmopolitan shops and cafes - and was voted in the UK top 5 for shopping locations. It also has a vibrant 6 day open air market.

For more artistic people there is the Sainsbury's Centre for Visual Arts, which has various displays of artwork and artefacts, there are also theatres, cinemas, and a wide selection of restaurants. An insight into Norfolk's colourful past from pre Roman up to the last century is provided by the many museums (Castle museum, Gressenhall, Bridewell, Strangers hall).

Bird watching - One guest in 2007, recorded over 50 bird species in and around the garden and its environs, his personal highlight being a spotted fly catcher. Kingfishers Retreat's central location makes it convenient to visit all the major R.S.P.B. reserves of the Norfolk/Suffolk area from Strumpshaw to Minsmere, as well as the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Reserves.

Walking - There are a number of walks which can be taken directly from the front door of Kingfishers Retreat each with luck can be adjusted to include a convenient pub for lunch and for the more adventurous there are various long distance walks.

Cycling - a network of quiet country lanes offers the chance to explore, at a gentle pace, the villages and towns of Norfolk, one route recommended, is to the delightful market town of Wymondham with its ancient market building, abbey and collection of buildings spanning the centuries. Or to Hingham, a delightful Georgian town where Abraham Lincoln's ancestors originated, or so the story goes. There are also a number of official cycle routes and cycle paths.

Fishing - Neighbouring villages offer the chance for fly fishing and course fishing both to a good standard.

We are close to the Norfolk and Norwich hospital and the University of East Anglia.

No smoking and No pets.
