Pleasant walks along rural lanes, nearby beaches, historic sites and Country Houses/Gardens all within easy reach. The owner is extremely knowledgeable about the area as well as very friendly and welcoming. Nearby pub serves good food if you want a rest from cooking in the kitchen which is fully equipped with everything one could need. Abundant wild life to watch in surrounding grounds, also plenty of activities are provided for children. Three visits so far - and there will be more.

Ideal retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Retreat for us was ideally located within the beautiful Sussex countryside. The property was very clean and exceptionally well equipped. Although located within the grounds of the owner, it was positioned at a distance in such a way to be sufficiently isolated. The owner Phil and his wife provided a warm welcome and were always willing to help should the need arise without being obtrusive. The Sawyers P.H. nearby provided a warm welcome in which to enjoy a pint and also tasty meals at the bar or restaurant attached.

One of the best cottages we have stayed in and the location is perfect.

  • 5 of 5

We met Phil, the owner,on arrival at The Retreat. He and his wife are very kind and friendly. Thank you for the goodies you kindly provided.

The Retreat is so warm and comfortable. Home from home. It is very well looked after and spotless. It was perfect for the 4 of us with a bathroom and an en-suite. There are 2 lovely bedrooms with comfortable beds. The kitchen is nice and every thing you need is there. The lounge is good to relax in, cosy and warm. We loved the outlook and watching the geese. There is a lovely sitting area outside and also a place to park your car.

The location is so peaceful and is also handy for visiting place we love such as Hastings and Rye.There is a good market at Rye on Thursdays.

Thank you both very much for everything. We are all very much looking forward to coming back again.

Staying at The Retreat, September 2016

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed in a number of holiday cottages it was immediately obvious that The Retreat is one of the best appointed and cared for properties you are likely to find.

The level of equipment was outstanding, particularly in the kitchen, and everything worked as expected.

The owner and his wife were on holiday for most of our week's stay, but went to great lengths to make sure we had everything we needed before they went.

Holiday cottages don't come better than this one.

IDYLLIC

  • 5 of 5

This was a teriific offeringThe accommodation was very good with a lot of thought given to your possible needs. The Owners went out of their way to make your holiday a pleasure avoiding intruding while being very approachable if required. You had your own space with decking area overlooking the woodland and geese beyond. Yes there are woodpeckers there. A lovely quiet location with excellent 16th century pub across the road.Food offering there is very good and reasonably priced.

Take your walking boots with you to take advantage of the footpaths nearby.Good place to tour from with easy car access to Hastings. Rosemasry lane is ok for access to Fairlight but other than that I avoided using the lanes as you could go a long way before gettig a passing place.

So good, we didn't want to leave

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, peaceful, comfortable cottage. Rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers, lots of other birds. A really comfy lounge to watch the Football!. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen all excellent. Everthing was just as described. We really enjoyed our daily outings but it was a joy to return to this little haven. Just up the drive and across the road, a lovely country pub with a good selection on the menu. Whilst we were there we experienced a variety of weather conditions but enjoyed every minute and would love to return again, and probably will. (Phil, the owner even separates and files all the 'Things to do' brochures into appropriate categories, ...in most places they may be found in a great pile in a draw!) Thanks, Phil, we really enjoyed our stay.

PEACEFUL, TRANQUIL & IDEAL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5

The quietest & most relaxing break the wife & I have had for many years, The cottage is set back from the road (50 yards) all you hear are the birds singing. You are located right in the middle of 1066 country with so much to see & do, we visited Battle, Rye, Hastings, Eastbourne, Bodium Castle, Great Dixter Gardens, Siisinghurst Gardens & Camber Sands, Rye being the wife's favourite as there is a large open air market on a Thursday. The cottage is clean & tidy

with everything you need for self catering holiday + plenty of games & large trampoline for children, or if you prefer to eat out The two Sawyers serves good pub grub book on fri & sat as it gets very busy, there is also a delightful coffee shop 200yrds away called the Tic Tock serves high teas & delicious cakes, Phil the owner is very helpful but not intrusive all in all an excellent holiday.

Facilities

From the Owner

You should feel relaxed and miles away from the 'hulaballoo' as The Retreat is set back over 35 yards from the village road. Having said that it is only a short walk to the local inn/restaurant, hairdresser's/café, post office and butcher's. Our guests are very happy with the location, accommodation, and what the property provides for their holiday. They 'want for nothing'. I lived at The Retreat for a year whilst building my house - maybe that is something to do with it as no white goods/hardware etc were removed when I moved into the house.
