Visit the family seaside resort of Scarborough, charming fishing port of Whitby, and quaint old smugglers’ haunts of Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay, or take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway. The area has a wealth of ancient castles and abbeys, museums, stately homes and gardens to enjoy. To combine shopping and sightseeing, the historic city of York is only an hour away. For excitement, try mountain-biking, quad-biking, or forest high-wire adventure.

Sample locally-brewed ales and fine cuisine in delightful country pubs, and plan your return.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

The east coast of North Yorkshire has a variety of beaches, all within easy reach by car. The fishing port of Whitby, with its sandy beaches is 17 miles. Robin Hood's Bay, popular with fossil hunters, is 22 miles, and the traditional seaside resort of Scarborough with its 2 sandy bays separated by the headland with the old town and its castle is 29 miles

Our rural location means that a car is essential for getting around the area.

York is probably the most useful railway station, with car hire facilities on site. Travel from there is 38 miles, approximately 1 hour

Distances:

Our nearest village is Rosedale Abbey, 2 miles away. A further 10 miles is the small market town of Pickering, with its castle and the North Yorkshire Moors preserved railway.

The historic city of York is 37 miles, and you will pass the magnificent Castle Howard on the way.
