Our Gite is attached to our 17th Century Farm house. It has two spacious bedrooms - one double and once with a single bed and bunk beds. Allowing it to sleep up to 5 people. It also has a sunny Lounge dining area and large fully equipped kitchen. Everything is on one level making it ideal for both young children or even elderly couples. The Gite garden is fully enclosed and equiped with BBQ and, sun loungers and table, chairs and sun umbrella. Our guests can make use of our extensive grounds, swimming pool, Trampoline and swings.

About the property

The Property is set in the heart of the French countryside, close to the towns of Brossac, Chalais and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne in the Poitou Charentes region in the south-west of France. We also offer bed and breakfast accommodation for those looking for a shorter stay.

Check out our website at www.gitesholidaysinfrance.co.uk and find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gitesholidaysinfrance.

We primarily cater to family holidays in France. There is a two bedroom gite and 2 bedroom chalet on our property. The Poitou Charentes region is ideal for families with young children. We offer the perfect place for parents to relax, while providing a safe haven for children to play and enjoy themselves.

The two bedroom Gite is located in the 2 acre grounds of our 17th century stone farmhouse and has full amenities. You and your family have full access to the grounds, and there is a ten metre long, one metre deep fenced swimming pool that is ideal for children.

The 2 bedroom Chalet is located away from the main house and Gite at the far end of our grounds. It is though still close to the pool and facilities.

There is extensive room for children to run and play safely within the grounds of the main house. As well as the shallow swimming pool, there is a secret wendy house hidden in our bamboo forest where children can play, and we have a large trampoline and swings, as well as a large selection of toys and games to keep your children entertained. We have chickens (safely contained in a large run), and the children are welcome to help us collect the eggs in the morning.

All guests are provided with a small welcome pack (milk, bread, wine) and welcome drink on arrival. The two bedroom chalet has a full kitchen, but if you don't fancy cooking we can provide your family with cheap evening meals freshly made with local produce, much of it from our own garden.

We understand that you want to spend time with your children on holiday, but that it’s also nice to escape by yourselves. We offer a complementary babysitting service, and are quite happy to drop you off at a local restaurant for a lunchtime or evening meal. We want the whole family to enjoy themselves on their holiday in Poitou Charentes.

We can provide high chairs, baby baths etc. if required.

Les Hiboux is six kilometres away from the lovely small hilltop town of Brossac. The pretty town of Brossac offers restaurants, bakeries (boulangeries), butchers (boucheries), banking, a pharmacy and postal service. Twenty minutes away is the town of Chalais, at which you can find a busy Monday market and an impressive hilltop Chateau.

Brossac is at a convenient crossroads to the Dordogne, Charente Maritime, and Aquitaine, each no more than 15 minutes away. We are also within easy access of day visits to the major destinations of Bordeaux, Cognac, St Emilion, Angouleme and more.

The Poitou Charentes region, in the south-west of France, is less well-known than other holiday regions of France, and we love it for that reason. Life here in the Poitou Charentes is simple and sedate, perfect for a relaxing peaceful holiday, and ideal for an affordable family holiday.

The region has many kinds of natural beauty, from the Atlantic coast, to the undulating green hills inland, to the foothills of the Massif Central. If you are looking for beaches, there are many swimming lakes with lake beaches, as well as the beaches of the Atlantic coast. If you are looking to explore nature, the gentle inland scenery provides great opportunities for walking, cycling and horse-riding. If you are looking for culture, there are many historic towns, chateaus and monuments to visit. If you are simply looking to relax with your children in peaceful surroundings then Poitou Charentes is the perfect spot for you.

The climate of the Poitou Charentes is one of the sunniest outside of the Mediterranean coastal areas. However the sunny summer weather is ideal for families with young children because gentle onshore breezes help to prevent the oppressive heat that you can find on the Mediterranean coastline. Average summer temperatures are around 28-30°C.

About Geoff Powell

We have been visiting France since our children (now grown up) were young and had some fantastic holidays. We bought and renovated a small French farm house seven years ago and in 2013 we decided to move to France full time.

We bought this property in October 2013 and spent the last two year refurbishing and our Gite and Chalet as well asclearing the two acres of garden.

We want to give people the chance to enjoy a holiday in France as much as we always have.

Geoff Powell purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Geoff Powell chose Charente

We chose to settle in the Charente region because of the scenery, weather (second best weather in the whole of France) and availability of lake beaches, beautiful towns, countryside and local produce.

Although our location is rural, we have easy access via the N10 to many historic towns such as Bordeaux and Angouleme.

What a gem of a place

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived with our two sons, we could not been made to feel more welcome, Geoff and Jenny are your perfect hosts, there in the back ground if you need anything at anytime of the day, everything was really clean, with a local farm nearby producing the best ice cream ever and Geoff even showed us a local winery which was only 5 minutes away to sample some of the best wine we have ever tested, would highly recommend staying here so much so we are going back again this year

Peaceful location - perfect for a young family

  • 5 of 5

From initial enquiry through to the day of departure, Jenny & Geoff were the perfect hosts. Informative and helpful with travelling advice and always on hand during the stay should we need assistance. Our two boys (aged 10 and 4) loved the pool and the grounds, Primrose (the dog) is still spoken about at our dinner table. The accommodation was very clean, and a perfect size for a family of 4 with everything we could have needed - wifi, washing machine, dishwasher, linen and towels provided. The location is rural but really relaxing and tranquil. We made the most of the local beach lakes and on the only one gloomy-ish day we had we headed for the vineyards. We wish we had stayed for longer than one week and really do recommend this property. It is excellent value.

Great gîte in a fab location

  • 5 of 5

Geoff and Jenny were the perfect hosts - easy going and friendly. The gîte itself was well equipped, clean and welcoming and we had a lovely week at Les Hiboux. Our children loved the pets and the garden and we enjoyed a trip to the local vineyard, arranged by Geoff, which would definitely recommend. All in all a great place to stay.

Excellent family gite in rural location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Les Hiboux from Aug 9th for a fortnight and found it to be an excellent base for a family with young children (2 and 7 year old boys) to explore the Charante area.

The gite itself is spacious and well equipped and more importantly for us all on one level which was great with an accident prone, hyper active 2 year old.

The extensive gardens and grounds are wonderful for children to explore and ours loved helping to collect the eggs from the chickens and surveying the produce in the veggie plot. The gardens are well equipped with a lovely outdoor swimming pool, trampoline, swings and slides and toys. We also went for lots of bike rides and walks to the nearby ice cream factory!

There are plenty of attractive villages and town to explore close by: Brossac itself, Chalais, Angouleme and our favourite Aubeterre sur Dronne, as well as some pretty lakeside resorts. Further afield, Bordeaux is a stunning city with excellent attractions, restaurants and shopping.

Last but certainly not least, Geoff and Jenny were the perfect hosts; welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area and French customs. They went out of their way to help with any query or concern both at the booking stage and whilst on holiday.

We would highly recommend Les Hiboux. We left with some fantastic holiday memories and if you are reading this review and book are sure you will too. Thank you Geoff and Jenny.

A Wonderful Rural Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Les Hiboux provided us with the perfect French holiday retreat. The Gite is spotless and well equipped, the location quiet and rural. The grounds are enormous, giving the children lots to explore. The trampoline, swings and pool were well used and enjoyed.

Geoff and Jenny were wonderful hosts and ensured we were well looked after. We fully recommend their offer to provide dinner - we had two delicious home cooked meals on the terrace which added to the relaxation of the holiday.

We visited two of the local lake beaches and the river beach in Aubeterre, which is in itself a beautiful town to see.

Cannot recommend highly enough for someone wanting an 'out of the way' holiday with plenty to do and see nearby.

Owner's Response: Helen/Dan, Thanks for your kind words. It was a pleasure to have you here. !If you do come this way again we would recommend a nearby restaurant we ate in yesterday. 6 courses, wine and coffee for 13.50 a head - great food and fantastic value! We were mad and walked there (10km there and another 10 back!) but it was worth it. Geoff and Jenny

We had a lovely stay at Chez Bouchet. It is set in a quiet location with its own garden and barbeque. We had use of all the grounds and pool. The children loved the pool, trampoline and badminton. Not far away are the lakes. Supermarkets 10 mins away.

The gite had everything I needed including a dish washer and washing machine.

We would recommend this gite and the lovely owners Geoff and Jenny.
