About the property

Apartment in Aldwick, Bognor Regis, West Sussex - Situated in a quiet, private development. Ideally suited to the independent traveller

The area surrounding Oakwood Lodge has an enormous variety of attractions to entertain the most demanding visitor. From ancient sites such as Fishbourne Roman Villa to Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, to the beauty of the South Downs National Park. Visitors are never at a loss for something to do. Activities include sailing and water-sports to fishing, whether it’s sea-angling, freshwater coarse or fly-fishing; all can be enjoyed locally. Walking, of course, is another way of experiencing the local environment and large stretches of the South Downs Way are to be found close by. The popular sport of golf is well catered for with the renowned Goodwood Golf Club not far away and speaking of Goodwood there is, of course, the world famous Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting for the motor-sport enthusiast. Members of the horse racing fraternity will know of the annual fixture known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’. A four day meeting at one of England’s finest race courses.

Those who like their racing 'over the sticks' should remember, Fontwell Park is a 15 minute drive away.

For the history lover the City of Chichester, the County Town of West Sussex, is worth a visit. As one of the better preserved Roman towns it’s walls are still walkable for much of their length. The market cross is the centre-piece of the City and the Cathedral is a site to behold. For the more cultured there is Chichester’s famous Festival Theatre where many well-known names appear in a variety of productions each season. The wide choice of productions range from the classics to comedy; Classical recitals and modern music concerts. Chichester also has a superb art gallery. Known as the Pallant House Gallery it caters for all tastes in modern and classical art.

As has already been mentioned the Fishbourne Roman Villa is worth a visit, as too is the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum where examples of some of England’s fine old buildings have been restored and re-erected for visitors to experience life as it used to be. Another attraction is Amberley’s Chalk Pits Museum where the historic exhibits will bring back memories for many of the trades of bygone days.

One of England's oldest feudal towns, Arundel, is close by. The seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, Arundel boasts a spectacular castle surrounded by beautiful gardens both of which are open to the public.

All-in-all there is plenty to do and see locally, whatever your interest, and ‘Oakwood’ provides the ideal base from which to explore.

About Gerry Dowsett

The owners are both retired and enjoying their time travelling at home and abroad. They converted the apartment as part of their retirement plan. The idea was to split their time between their home and their holiday home in Menorca with the apartment giving them another interest whilst they're in England.

They have always been interested in old cars and membership of car clubs has given them the chance to meet other, like-minded people. Motoring club friends have stayed at the apartment in the past and many have made favourable comments about it's suitability for using as a touring base in the South of England.

Gerry Dowsett purchased this apartment in 2008

Superb Apartment and Hosts

  • 5 of 5

We booked this wonderful apartment to celebrate a birthday and to visit family and friends. We arrived to a warm welcome from Gerry and a home baked sponge from Liz, (which was delicious). The apartment was warm, spacious, quiet and spotless. Gerry and Liz had also supplied a number of essentials such as Tea, Coffee, Milk. Cereals and kindly a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate my birthday.

We have been coming to the Bognor area for a number of years and this is without doubt the most comfortable and enjoyable accommodation we have found. Moreover we hope to be visiting the area for many years to come but now only when this superb apartment is available. Thank you Gerry and Liz.

Could have stayed longer

  • 5 of 5

We were at this lovely flat for two weeks, and hated to leave. The suite was spotless, very quiet and had everything and more that you could need. The owners were very helpful and eager to share their love and knowledge of the area; but not intrusive or nosey. If you are a car person, ask Gerry for a peek at his babies. The garden and flower beds throughout are lovely, and perfect for gazing at over morning coffee or tea.

There is everything needed in the way of shopping a short walk away, as well as restaurants, florists, druggist, and more.

We couldn't have asked for more, as Liz and Gerry have thought of everything. We had heard about the welcome cake and weren't disappointed. The hosts are cheerful, helpful and quick with a joke. We felt welcome and relaxed from the minute we arrived until we sadly left.

Lovely, quiet location

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in a quiet, private road, a short drive from Bognor Regis and other coastal towns.

The property is spacious and comfortable for a short stay in the countryside and is so quiet. It was very clean and tidy and well-maintained. The kitchen well-equipped with everything for self-catering. We particularly appreciated the range of breakfast items and drinks provided. Also the offer of using the garden was very good.

We were met by the owner who lives next door. He is very friendly and helpful with advice about places to visit or shop.

We would recommend this place to our friends and look forward to returning next year. Thank you.

This was a very comfortable and well equipped apartment in a delightful place, much enhanced by the owners' warm hospitality and helpfulness: home baked cake on arrival, basic provisions in the fridge and advice about beauty spots in the area - it couldn't have been improved!

Perfect Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased with the apartment. It suited our needs very well. We were in and out visiting family and friends. It was well situated for our needs. The rooms were well set up. The owners were happy to lend what we hadn't got. The freshly baked cake was delicious. The house and apartment were very well kept and we were encouraged to use the garden as often as we wanted. We would highly recommend the apartment and will definitely stay again when we are in the area. We feel we have become friends with the owners.

Gorgeous apartment! Spacious and brilliantly equipped. Fantastically quiet and ideally located to 'pop' to wherever you need to - be that a local pub or further afield to sightsee. The Beach is 3 mins down the road in the car, but in summer, I'm sure you could walk there. Liz and Gerry are lovely and the extra touches of food essentials and cleansing bits and pieces were great. The hand baked cakes were gorgeous (and the diet starts tomorrow). Great to have parking on the drive right outside the property which is in a private road so no through traffic. The apartment looked exactly like the pictures, was immaculately clean and I would definitely stay again.

I've stayed in apartments before which were part of a larger house and found you could hear what was going on in the rest of the house - not this one! Didn't hear a peep. Honestly, didn't want to come home.

Special interest holidays:

The RSPB Wildfowl Reserve at Pagham Harbour is a must for the serious bird enthusiast. Many interesting species can be seen on the estuary which is a mere 3 minutes away, by car. Pagham Harbour is recognised as one of the more important stop-off points for birds either migrating or over-wintering in the south of England. Birds, such as Brent Geese, Shelduck, Oyster-catcher, Little Tern and many various other species of wildfowl can be seen at Pagham and the bonus of hide facilities and the services of a local RSPB warden add to the experience.

West Sussex is well-known for having some of the regions most beautiful beaches. The list is almost endless but among the most appealing are Bognor Sands, Felpham and Middleton, Bracklesham Bay and The Witterings (East and West). Littlehampton is always worth a visit.

The nearest beach to the apartment is Aldwick (Dark Lane) which is 5 minutes by car or 10 on foot. Pagham beach is a little further but still only a reasonable walk.

Oakwood Lodge can be reached easily by road via the east/west A27(M) route; or north/south by the A3 or M3. The A259 is a more leisurely coastal route for those not in too much of a hurry. Direct route from Gatwick Airport is via A23/A24/A29 to Bognor Regis, then local roads to Aldwick.

Our nearest village, Rose Green is 6 minutes on foot. This gives access to shops, butchers and fishmongers, ATMs, Post Office and newsagents.

A 5 minute drive takes you to Nyetimber where you will find no less than 4 pubs most of which are excellent for dining or a welcome pint of real ale or glass of wine.

Chichester is 7 miles away with a bus stop close to home for those who don't want to drive.

Goodwood, famous for the Festival of Speed and Revival meetings and for interested in all-things equestrian there's 'Glorious Goodwood'.

Further afield Portsmouth : 20 miles / Brighton : 30 miles / London : 65 miles.
