Unique location near many historic landmarks

  • 4 of 5

The location is great if you love the countryside and history. More or less in the front yard you'll find the abbey from year 1100 and cows wandering around looking over the fence into the front yard. The house it self is not luxurious but it has all the features most would need. We as a child family missed a dryer in the humid, cold summer but that's pretty much it. The neighbors were very accommodating and you could tell the manager of the house had tried to make us feel welcome with fresh flowers, fruit and much more. Many historic sites nearby, such as the abbey (of course), Raby castle, Barnard Castle (both the city and castle) and Bowes museum. Also Lake District is only ca. 1 hour away, which can be recommended.

Not recommended. Overall very shabby and run down Showers mouldy. Fridge/freezer ancient, dirty, noisy broken shelves and a hole in the back panel. Oven door doesn’t fit. Bedding torn, old and smelly. Sofa grubby and stained. PAT testing out of date. Electric sockets regularly blowing fuses and bulbs. Wifi password needs entering morning and evening each day. Farm next door shoots the wildlife. Note the cottage is run by an Estate so no one is available to assist with faults or information outside of office hours.. Avoid

Owner's Response: Oh dear! We've responded to our guests' concerns following their stay with us and apologized for the succession of misfortunes that befell them. We've taken on board their comments and hope that future visitor experiences will be in line with the positive feedback we've received over a great number of years.....but not on this occasion.
