About the property

Converted from the old granary of North Boreston Farm into 1 bedroom cottage in lovely gardens

The Granary is a delightful stone cottage converted from the old granary of North Boreston Farm (no longer a working farm). The present farmhouse dates from the 1600s although the site has been occupied since medieval times. The property is set in a pretty rural hamlet of similar farms in rolling Devon countryside, a very peaceful place yet only 5 miles from beaches, cliffs, and the old market and port towns of Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. These towns provide all the modern facilities you need as well as being interesting to visit. All 3 towns have a wide range of independent shops as well as the main supermarkets. Our nearest village (2 miles) has a Post Office, a wonderfully-stocked food shop and a service station.

There are many recreational activities within a few miles: boat trips on the rivers or out to sea; fishing (sea fishing as well as fly fishing on local lakes); golf and walking trails on the coast and on Dartmoor. But if you just want to relax there are plenty of beautiful beaches and gardens to visit.

The accommodation is equipped, furnished and decorated to a high standard. There is a comfortable leather recliner suite and a pine dining table and chairs in the living/dining room. White china, fine glassware and cutlery are provided. TV, a DVD player and internet access are available.

The galley kitchen has all the facilities and equipment you will need. All bed linen, towels, soaps and toiletries are provided too. A complimentary welcome pack of local food is provided and will give you breakfast for the first day or two.

The en-suite bedroom has radio and TV, all linen, towels and toiletries. French windows open onto your own private terrace with views over parts of the garden.

About Rob and Jan Wagstaff

Rob and Jan retired from their professional lives to pursue their passion for gardening. They have created a magical garden which they and their guests thoroughly enjoy. Rob and Jan were keen walkers, and Rob also used to dive: where better to live than a traditional old farmhouse in south Devon, near to both the sea and the open spaces of Dartmoor. The mild climate is also a bonus.

Rob and Jan Wagstaff purchased this cottage in 1980

The perfect retreat to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

We booked the Granary as it was well located near local towns and easy to get to from the major roads, but equally was in a secluded position and 'away from it all'.

The property is in a great location, and is set in beautiful surroundings. The Granary itself is perfect for two, well equipped and very comfortable. Parking is not a problem either, as there is dedicated parking space directly opposite.

Rob and Jan are the perfect hosts too, very friendly and helpful.

My wife and I spent 5 days here in March 2017, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Whilst the weather was that typically expected in March (a tad wet), it did not spoil our enjoyment of staying in the Granary and we certainly plan to return in the not too distant future.

Owner's Response: Tracey and Neil were the ideal guests, a pleasure to share our lovely bit of Devon with. They said when they left that they had tidied up and left the cottage OK. That was an understatement it was immaculate!

The Granary is a lovely, well equipped rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The Granary is great for two people. Rob and Jan are kind hosts and have clearly put a great deal of thought into furnishing their property as it had all we needed for our stay. The garden was beautiful with lovely snowdrops, daffodils and hellebores in bloom and we could imagine how lovely it would be in the summer, especially being able to sit out on the patio area. We did quite a bit of exploring during our stay and can thoroughly recommend it as a base to explore this beautiful area. We particularly enjoyed Greenway, Coleton Fishacre, Totnes and Dartmouth.

Peace in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week in this wonderful, peaceful & secluded accommodation with gorgeous 7 acres of garden. Done up to a very high standard and easily accessible to many local attractions. Roads extremely narrow but car essential. We travelled to many lovely beaches, villages and also not far from Exeter. Cottage very clean in idyllic surround. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting tranquility.

Idyllic!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place. Everything is top quality and 'does what it says on the tin'. Beautifully quiet and a pleasure in the mornings to look down the garden and see a variety of birds feeding, including a couple of pheasants. An exploration of the garden(s).....more than one....shouldn't be missed. Highly recommended!

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Sited in the middle of the South Hams peninsular of South Devon, The Granary has beaches to the east, south and west, all within half an hour at most by car. Some are sandy, some shingle, and some have highly-recommended cafes.

Travel:

The South Hams has good travel links: the airport at Exeter is 50 minutes drive. The M5 and A38 dual carriageway link the area to the rest of the UK motorway network, and there is a main line train station 5 miles away at Totnes. Travelers from mainland Europe can take a cross-channel ferry to Plymouth, 20 miles from the cottage. A car is essential for travel once you arrive in the area.

Distances:

Exeter and Plymouth are each about 20 miles away. The historic towns of Totnes, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge are each 5 - 8 miles away. The southern edge of Dartmoor, just over 10 miles away, provides excellent walking, as well as many features of archaeological interest.

Further Details:

There are horse riding, fishing, boating and water sports available in the area, as well as many beautiful walks on the South Coast Path. The world famous nature reserve at Slapton is 7 miles away

The area has many gardens open to the public, castles and historic houses to explore, and medieval towns and old ports to visit, and beautiful coast and countryside just to relax in.

Devon is famous for its food. We are surrounded by suppliers of locally grown fruit and vegetables, by butchers selling Red and South Devon beef and Dartmoor lamb, by bakers of real bread, and cheese makers. We have good food markets and excellent places to eat. You can try a pub half a mile away known for its steaks, to restaurants in Dartmouth specializing in fish, to a 2-Michelin star restaurant on Dartmoor, and many more besides.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The Granary offers great privacy: it is the only holiday cottage converted from the the old stone barns of North Boreston Farm. A wide range of books and magazines and DVDs are provided, together with detailed information on the attractions and facilities in the area. The cottage is no smoking; we are unable to accept pets. Outside: The Granary is set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens which have been featured in magazines and on TV. We aim to have highlights in flower throughout the year, including camellias and rhododendrons in spring, a stunning 'African garden' with African plants at their peak in July and August; an exotic garden with bamboos, bananas and a wide range of other plants chosen for their architectural effect; and ponds and bog garden areas. Guests have full access to all of the gardens. The private terrace for guests is accessed from the French windows of the cottage, and is equipped with table, chairs and a parasol. This is a lovely spot for al-fresco dining or just relaxing. Adjacent to the terrace on one side is a wisteria-covered pergola. On the opposite side an old stone-built linhay provides covered parking for guests in the cottage. The terrace gives glorious views of and access to the gardens. Utility Room: There is access to laundry facilities in the owners' farmhouse. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and bed linen are provided. For guests staying longer than one week, these are changed every week.
