Updated: 18-Oct-2016
Swift Cottage in Tideswell, Peak District, Derbyshire, England - Peaceful Peak District Location, 5 Minutes Stroll From The Village Centre

Swift Cottage is a three bedroom quality cottage ideally placed for a self-catering holiday for groups of up to 5 in the Peak District National Park. One of four terraced former quarrymen's dwellings dating back to the early 1800s, Swift Cottage is located in a peaceful location on the edge of Tideswell. Recently refurbished and well-maintained, it provides spotlessly clean, bright and airy accommodation with quality furnishings throughout, creating an unparalleled environment with all the modern facilities required for a perfect self-catering holiday.

Swift Cottage has some of the best views in Tideswell, overlooking the well-maintained cottage garden to the dale beyond. The cottage is professionally maintained and benefits from quality wooden flooring in bedroooms and sitting room, a paved patio with teak garden furniture and a luxury bathroom. Free WiFi is provided together with streaming movies, catch-up TV and Sky news channels for entertainment. Local walking and guide books, games and novels, a Blu Ray player and 34" flat screen television are provided in the cosy sitting room, complete with log burner.

Main access is via the shared level footpath across the fronts of the two neighbouring cottages to the right on the terrace, with additional access via steps through the front garden and through the back entrance leading to the off road car park.

Secure storage is provided for up to 4 bicycles and a barbecue is supplied for outdoor cooking on the patio.

The cottage is annually accessed and rated at Visit Britain 4 Star standard, and equipped accordingly. Swift Cottage has received many five star reviews and is rated "Excellent" on a popular site which provides advice for those going on trips.

Beds are fitted with quality pocket-sprung Kozeesleep Pocket Master mattresses with a firmness rating of 7/10 (medium firm) to ensure a good night's sleep. Guests frequently comment on the comfort of our beds. A travel cot is available on request, together with a high chair.

The cottage is particularly suited to couples, small groups and families who are seeking that little bit of extra luxury from a country cottage holiday.

Parking in the Townhead area of Tideswell is plentiful, either in the Parish Council maintained car park 25 metres to the rear of the cottage or on the surrounding roads.

Minimum 3 night breaks are offered out of season (November - March, excluding some holiday periods), minimum 7 nights during high season (Saturday changeover).

Wonderful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We visited Swift cottage for a few days beginning the 29th April 2014. We booked direct with Charles the owner and found him very efficient and helpful. The description and photographs of the cottage on the internet were very accurate. The property was of a very high standard, we travel frequently staying in many properties and found this to be one of the best. The property was very clean, the furnishings modern and comfortable and the view from the front terrace was to die for. It is the first cottage I have ever stayed in where everything I needed was provided. The village was lovely and the surrounding area was great for exploring. I would definitely recommend the cottage and I am sure we will return. Well done Charles and Adelle.

Swift Cottage - wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful and cosy cottage in a very pleasant village with all the necessary shopping facilities (Co op opens daily until 10 pm). Modern and comfortable furniture, cozy beds and a full equipped kitchen. The look from the front porch is most beautiful and the neighbors are very friendly and helpful.

Many walking opportunities start at the house.

We enjoyed our vacation very much and can really recommend it.

Location

From the Owner

As long term Tideswell residents, we purchased Swift Cottage in 2010 because of its unique, peaceful edge of village location, unparalleled views, yet proximity to the amenities found in the bustling village centre just a few minutes walk away. Our aim from the outset has been to provide guests with a degree of comfort not found in the average Tideswell holiday cottage, installing touches of luxury such as the bathroom with whirlpool bath and underfloor heating, wooden floors in all bedrooms, free Wi Fi and live streaming movies and news. We live in the village so are always on hand should you need us - yet far enough away so you don’t feel we’re overlooking you or encroaching on your privacy!

Activity and Interests

Travel:

The nearest airport is Manchester International which is approximately 55 minutes. East Midlands Airport is also only an hour away. Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away.

Birmingham Airport is 1 hour 30 minutes away.

The nearest main train station is Chesterfield which is 45 minutes away. Sheffield railway station is 50 minutes away from the cottage.

Distances:

Bakewell is 8 miles and Buxton 9 miles away from Tideswell.

Chatsworth is approximately the same distance away.

“Far from the Madding Crowds” as it's often described (if a couple of hundred miles north of the West Country setting of Thomas Hardy’s classic!), Tideswell is an ideal central location to explore the magic of the Peak District National Park.

Further Details:

Swift Cottage is superbly situated as a base from which to discover the Peak District, to relax and unwind or get adventurous and try something new such as a challenging walk (the Five Dales, for example, accessible from the door), or even to take to the skies in a glider!

Tideswell is a real 'working village' which sustains itself (as opposed to a 'dormitory village', like Cressbrook, for example). The village is famous for the large church in its centre known as 'the Cathedral of the Peak’, dating back to 1320 and well worth a visit once you arrive. Tideswell is also very well known for its spectacular Well Dressing and Village Carnival, which takes place on the 3rd Saturday in June every year. The village has 4 great local pubs, 2 cafes, a chemist, family butchers, bakers, fruit and veg shop, 2 fish and chip shops and a Co-Op supermarket which is open 7 days a week until 10 p.m. every night. We actively encourage guests to use the local shops and drink plenty of local ale to help keep the village sustainable - and to make use of the environmentally friendly recycling services.

Also on offer locally are:

Hillwalking

Stunning walks in the White Peak and a short drive away in the Dark Peak, for all levels.

Climbing

Fantastic climbing opportunities nearby on Stanage Edge and the Roaches, considered to provide some of the most challenging routes in Europe.

Gliding and Para Gliding

There are gliding, paragliding and hang gliding schools nearby

Fishing

The area abounds with unparalleled fly-fishing and coarse fishing in rivers such as the Wye and Dove (of “The Compleat Angler” fame) as well as well-stocked reservoirs. The Wye is reputedly the only river in the UK with a stock of wild, naturally breeding rainbow trout - day permits available!

Cycling

The Peak District is superb for road cycling and mountain biking alike.

There is so much on offer you can take the Peak District on at your own pace and keep on coming back for more!

Facilities

From the Owner

We are ideally located on a peaceful edge of village location in the very heart of the Peak District National Park. The outdoor dining area (with quality teak furnishing), well-tended garden and views across the dale are unsurpassed within Tideswell. You can easily walk - run or ride a bike - out of the front door into unspoilt countryside. Parking in the Townhead area of the village is plentiful, both on road and in a free Parish Council car park 25 yards to the rear of Swift Cottage. Spectacular country houses such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall and market towns like Bakewell and Buxton are just a short drive away. The village has excellent facilities including a host of shops, 2 restaurants, 3 tea rooms/cafés and 3 very good pubs which serve local food and drink, all within easy walking distance of the cottage (and several more close by!) Tideswell is a charming 'real' village where the local residents are friendly and life passes at a relaxed pace reminiscent of a past era. Relax and enjoy the setting - we did and decided to stay!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Exterior and room plans of this lovely old cottage have been left roughly as they would have been some 200 years ago when it was built. Modern wooden double glazed windows and doors fitted to the frontage have been specially chosen to remain sympathetic to the original character of the building, while providing the highest modern standards of insulation. The off-white masonry paintwork of the outside walls is consistent with that of typical period Derbyshire cottages. Internal decor and furnishings have been chosen with guests' comfort as the primary consideration - a far cry from the well-worn, dust and cobwebs "country cottage style" and car-boot "antiques" favoured by some holiday rental owners! Outside: To the front of the property is the enclosed patio and outside dining area, with quality teak furnishings and seating for up to 6 - perfect for barbecues (an 'oil drum' type one is provided). Below the patio is the well-tended cottage garden with small pond and bench for relaxing in the sun. To the rear is a paved area and secure shed, suitable for the storage of bicycles. The cottage garden and patios catch the sun all day and are perfect for relaxing. Behind the cottage is a grassy lane leading to the children’s play area, small free Parish Council maintained car park and a grassed area suitable for dog walking or playing ball games. Utility Room: Washing machine, condenser spin dryer Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: High quality towels and pressed linen are included. The cottage is cleaned thoroughly before each booking by a professional cleaning service. A cottage garden and maintenance team is on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly. Owners live in the village.
