About the property

Totally Private House within Galloway House Estate Nr. Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Overlooking Bay, Easy Walk To The Beach/Village

Park Cottage is a carefully restored, listed former rectory within Galloway House Estate overlooking Wigtown Bay on the sheltered Dumfries and Galloway coast. Please see aerial video which is in the photo gallery. Set among ancient trees with 23 private acres of parkland to enjoy, Park Cottage is a five star mix of antiques and modern luxury. In 1740, the Earl of Galloway chose this exceptionally sheltered bay to build his mansion and to develop a Capability Brown inspired garden. You can still make out the avenue where the rector rode his pony to the mansion house chapel. The stable is now our log store. Today our visitors can enjoy 23 private acres of this listed landscape with the sea and venerable trees to the east and open fields and the old laundry just visible to the south. Enjoy the summerhouse and watch the fishing boats sailing by or perhaps catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife in the garden. Head to the safe, sandy beach at Rigg Bay- an easy walk along the beautiful coastal path. Then onwards to Cruggleton Castle ruin- a very rewarding walk with magnificent cliff-top views. A detour on your homeward journey will bring you through delightful Galloway House Gardens and back to enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the U.K. A haven of tranquility and complete privacy to come back to after a day's adventuring or to enjoy on it's own merits. Please also go to http://bit.ly/1RbLfE4 for my own guide of the area surrounding Park Cottage.

About Lorraine Murray

I live in Scotland with my husband. We have 2 children-one a Doctor and the other an I.T. entrepreneur. We are farmers and antique dealers with a shop in Virginia, U.S.A. We love living in south-west Scotland with its gorgeous uncrowded beaches, superb scenery, and friendly locals. I am a hill walker so the coastline and hills are blissfully peaceful. My husband is a golfer and his local course of St. Medan is Scotland's most southerly and awards dramatic coastline views- the sunsets are amazing!

Lorraine Murray purchased this house in 2000

Why Lorraine Murray chose Dumfries & Galloway

Although not looking to purchase a property with two other businesses already, we knew we had to buy Park Cottage as its location and potential were too tempting! With 23 private acres, a sea view and of historical significance, this listed house had great appeal. Having renovated it to a very high standard and installed bio mass heating, every comfort is offered. With its tree lined drive and sea view, Park Cottage is blissfully away from the rat race! With open fields and the old stone laundry just visible to one side and the sea on the other, guests can enjoy an truly idyllic location.

What makes this house unique

In addition to a sandy beach in easy walking distance at Rigg Bay, the seas around Garlieston are very popular with sailors, sea anglers and kayakers. Dry land offers cyclists and hill-walkers endless adventures. Kirroughtree, part of the 7 stanes complex, is just a 20 minute drive away. In nearby Galloway Forest, the U.K.'s first dark sky park, Glentrool offers the cyclist and hill walker a vast outdoor playground. Golfers are well catered for with St. Medan just a 10 minute drive away and with further courses locally at Wigtown, (also Scotland's Book Town) and Newton Stewart. Laggan Outdoor Centre has one of Europe's longest zip wires. Cream O' Galloway is world renowned for it's ice cream and has superb play facilities. The Cocoa Bean Company is another great treat!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Absolutely wonderful week with wall to wall sunshine. We didn't stray far-just one day to Portpatrick and the Mull of Galloway. House is absolutely beautiful and many hours spent in the garden reading and contemplating nothing in particular. Thanks Lorraine for providing such a wonderful place-we are already planning our return visit."

A Fortnight in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from two weeks relaxation at this fabulous property. It really is the best accommodation we ever have stayed in, having been lured by the promise of seclusion and quiet. We were certainly not disappointed in that respect.

It is hard to imagine more more peaceful place to enjoy nature. The garden is wonderfully enclosed and private, with only bird song and the occasional bat call for company. Our dogs absolutely loved every minute of their experience, as did our Daughter who is recovering from serious ill health and needs to use a wheelchair. The access and amenities were first rate, particularly the downstairs wet room. So much so that we barely looked upstairs. Alice fell in love with her bedroom and the Snug, where she watched DVDs bought on our various trips out. Similarly, my Wife adored the huge Kitchen and has dreamed of making Christmas Dinner whilst gazing out into the lovely garden. I'm not sure if that a hint but I would have no objection to sampling the delights of Park Cottage again.

After our year of Hell, it is hard to put a price on such wonderful memories. Everything about Dumfries and Galloway is special. The people are warm and friendly, the place itself so laid back and unspoiled. That is an often used word, but in this case could not be more appropriate. I remember going on holiday 40 years ago and the whole experience was like being back in one of my childhood memories.

The owner, Lorraine, rang from the US during the first week to see how we were enjoying ourself. What a lovely thought and she was overjoyed we were so happy with our holiday. Many thanks also to Alex, who looks after the bookings when Lorraine is away. Alex pooped round with duck eggs and loads of information and handled the booking very efficiently.

All in all, I cannot recommend Park Cottage more highly.

I don't want to let the secret out too much though. It's obvious D & G has a much deserved place in a lot of people's hearts. You can add 3 more to that list!

The place to relax

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place!

Possibly the most relaxing holiday ever.

There were 6 of us sharing this beautiful cottage and everything about it exceeded our expectations.

Far more time was spent lounging around inside or in the lovely grounds than was good for us - we missed out many of the sites we had intended to visit.

The location was wonderful with just a short stroll to the village pub and harbour, and a shortcut through the garden to the coast.

Inside, the cottage was well equiped and we made use of the 3 ovens to cook a full Xmas dinner (complete with large turkey).

I'm not normally one for gushing reviews, but Park Cottage deserves it, in fact we are just about to book again for later in the year.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you have discovered us! Yes the house and grounds have been called "inspiring" by another guest and I like to think this corner of Galloway is a real hidden gem. Totally private, yet a short stroll to the village and the sea on your doorstep! I look forward to your return! Kind Regards, Lorraine

Four of us stayed here, what a superb property! Plenty of space for all of us,amazing kitchen, decorating and furniture really good quality.

One of us has difficulty walking but no problems with access to the

wet room and downstairs bedroom.

The gardens so peaceful,no traffic noise at all, just birds tweeting.

Would recommend for anyone wanting to wind down and relax and sleep with plenty of sea air.
