Tree House, 5 min from sea, easy walk through wooded NT valley to safe cove.

Overview

Property

Updated: 07-Dec-2016
Tree House/Chalet in Nine Wells, Solva, Pembrokeshire, Wales - Peaceful Location, 5 Minutes Walk To The Sea And Safe Cove To Swim In

The Tree House, as its name implies, is built amongst the treetops. A gnarled apple tree branch burrows its way into the external steps and hawthorn flanks the south side. Set behind the owner's house in her own grounds, steep wooden steps lead into this unique property. The light and tranquil lounge has French doors opening onto a decked sitting area, with hammock, perfect for bird watching. Simple, yet comfortable furnishings compliment the exposed wooden floor boards and calming but cosy atmosphere - in fact this was the studio of acclaimed artist Peter Daniels. A short walk through a wooded valley owned by the National Trust, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, following a pretty stream with a pond leads to a quiet and sheltered cove, perfect for swimming, coasteering or fishing. Located between Solva and Cerfai beach this is a perfect setting for that simple retreat with or without children!

Please note: bookings of under 3 days incur an additional cleaning fee of £35.

About the Owner

Elizabeth and her family moved here 30 yrs ago, working and bringing up her family in such idyllic surroundings have been a privilege we never take for granted. Its lovely to be able to share it with others who come on holiday here.

I am now a mindfulness teacher and also teach children in the surrounding schools a wonderful course called .b.

We have been to Pembrokeshire six times and this is the best place we have stayed in by far. We enjoyed playing with Molly (the dog) going for walks and going to the beach. We loved it !!!

Idyllic peaceful retreat close to the sea

  • 5 of 5

My husband and our 16 month old son just had the most perfect 3 night beak at this wonderful location. The tree house is a rustic warm and cosy chalet located at the bottom of the owner's garden. It is a 5 minute walk from the sea and the picturesque Pembrokeshire coastal path. It is a perfect base from which to explore by car or on foot. The house is basic but well equipped and our son had a great time romping around both inside and out. Elizabeth was a warm welcoming host and I would highly recommend this wonderful place.

Rustic charm

  • 5 of 5

The Tree House is a special place and Elizabeth is a wonderful host. Location wise the property has it all, close to sea, beach, towns, countryside. The setting is idyllic with a beautiful meadow at the back of the property with sea views and only a short 10 minute stroll to a safe cove and headland walk. The accommodation itself is basic but comfortable providing all you need for anything up to a couple of weeks' holiday. Elizabeth was very warm and accommodating, even dog sitting for us while we visited Skomer. We could not have asked for more from either accommodation or host. We shall be back. Thank you Elizabeth!

A second peaceful and relaxing holiday.

  • 3 of 5

We have just returned from a second peaceful and relaxing holiday in The Tree House. The area is wonderful - a short walk through beautiful countryside to the coastal path and the breathtaking coast.

The house is simply but comfortably furnished and the kitchen well equipped.

The heating system is excellent and there is always instant hot water.

Clear and concise information regarding the "quirks" of the house are provided together with useful maps of walks in the area.

The owner, Elizabeth, is very approachable, friendly and accommodating.

We hope to return again for a 3rd stay.

Solva is wonderful but the Tree House isn't!

  • 2 of 5

Solva is a great location for a holiday. Let's leave Solva out of it !!!

Nice spot with pleasant walk to the coast from the door; decent-sized chalet; lots of hot water on demand; cooker works fine; one comfy sofa. So far so good ... but the listing (and the August season price!) makes you think that this will be quaint and lovely but it is a all a bit old and tired and gives the impression of not trying very hard at all. On arrival, chalet was cold, damp, musty, bedclothes had strong unpleasant smell. No person, or written words, or provisions (e.g. even a pint of milk) to greet us, which you kind of expect when you are paying a lot (check the august rates). No-one was ever at the main house to answer questions or help solve problems. Wifi did not work even right next to the owner's house (as was promised as a response to previous reviews). Heating works very well and you need it because of dampness (partly caused by weather obviously) and because windows in second bedroom and living room are draughty (and do not seem at all secure!). Sitting on the comfy sofa you can feel the breeze! Nowhere indoors to hang coats. Top bunk mattress has broken springs - unacceptable. Our poor lad had to try and cope with that. Chaise longue in living room is damaged and cannot be sat on with any degree of comfort utterly pointless. i have seen a previous review and the owner's response, but ... really ... no one wants broken furniture in a holiday home do they? if it is broken then it is just an obstruction, not helpful in any way, and not a 'feature'. Microwave very old and does not function properly. Figuring out the electrics was a bit of a challenge in hall/bathroom (to get light on next to shower, switch in hallway then pull chord next to shower?!?) and kitchen (unplu kettle to use toaster etc.). Ceiling lights in main bedroom did not work, though maybe there was some mysterious combination we could not discover.

Basically, this place needs to be much cheaper (in which case you would call it cheap and cheerful and could then maybe see the charm) or it needs to be much better quality pretty much throughout. It feels like it was once up together and charming but has been on the slide for a while now. shame. we would not recommend this unfortunately.

Owner's Response: I take very seriously the dissatisfaction of any guests. And I address the issues raised: • I really like that the Tree House is so warm and well ventilated, this is especially important when the weather is not good and guests are unable to fully enjoy the unrivalled scenery. • Though I would prefer to be on hand to welcome my guests that particular week I too was on holiday. There is a welcome letter with phone numbers of myself and a local person who is on hand to help out in any situation. The letter also has explanations about how the house works. • The smells mentioned are a mystery to me and I’ve asked others to check. The bedding is fresh and well aired when changed. • The cost is high is August but in line and cheaper than comparable properties managed by local holiday companies. • The internet is available 98% of the time at least. • I’m glad to have feedback about the lights. Any problems please let me know as soon as you possibly can and my electrician will come out if not on the day, then the day after. • There is an alcove next to the front door for coats. • Mattress in top bunk: please note IS being replaced at the end of the season, but springs are not broken, just not as comfortable as the others. • Microwave doesn’t need replacing as it works well. • I don’t provide provisions but have done for guests who request it. It’s no trouble so please do ask if it helps. This review was written the week after by a guest who booked through a different website: The Tree House is a beautiful and beautifully simple place. It's quiet, warm, light and airy. The location is great - just off the coast path with a gorgeous cove for wonderful swimming about 10 minutes walk away. The house is, as we expected, very no frills but the kitchen, living room and bathroom are lovely and there's a good shower and plenty of hot water - welcome after long walks. The bedrooms are very small but fine. Elizabeth is a warm and friendly host. We long to return. The whole area is very lovely. What Amanda loved about your listing: Loved the quiet and the beauty of the surroundings and the way the little house sits in the landscape. The house feels good to be in - it's warm and welcoming and all the windows look out onto woods and fields.

A peaceful and idyllic get away (but needs TLC)

  • 2 of 5

We chose this place as we are both artists & enjoy staying in unusual places, and expected 'shabby chic' but unfortunately it was more shabby than chic and is in need of considerable updating. We enjoyed our holiday and don't wish to be negative but feel we should point out to people thinking of booking, what to expect. To summarise; negatives: no wifi in property (only outside owners house) sofas & soft furnishings are old & uncomfortable and need replacing, all rooms need thorough clean & re-paint and windows (with some of the best views) are interrupted by paint/mist. New mattress covers/ duvet are needed on double bed. Positive points: The property is in an idyllic peaceful location for walking along the coast/birdwatching & relaxing. The owner is friendly and you are given complete privacy during your stay.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your review- we always appreciate customer feedback and seek to make your stay an enjoyable, one thing that is important to us is that our customer gets what's advertised. I am happy to say that a great many guests and reviews go to the trouble of saying that their experience of the Tree House exceeds their expectations, That being said I will look seriously at your disappointments. 1. (sofas & soft furnishings are old & uncomfortable and need replacing) The property is advertised as suitable for 4 people. We have very comfortable seating for 4 people. As well, there is an antique chaise lounge newly upholstered in a rich blue velvet which is lovely to look at but I agree isn't very comfortable - its more an ornament. 2. (all rooms need thorough clean) I only wish you had let me know. We really pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our property and in fact my cleaner is really excellent and I think I'm very lucky to have such a conscientious cleaner. We haven't ever had any complaints about cleanliness in fact once again the opposite. I apologise if this wasn't up to your expected standard. 3. ( re-paint and windows (with some of the best views) are interrupted by paint/mist.) It is true that some of the windows have specks of paint on them and at times when humidity is high there is condensation on the inside of the windows. We have just replaced the patio doors that had blown - all windows are double glazed - so I'm perplexed by your comment and I'll check again that other windows haven't blown. 4. ( New mattress covers/ duvet are needed on double bed) Once again, I'm perplexed as the mattress cover is, though not brand new perfectly serviceable as is the duvet in my opinion. However I'll have a close look. 5.( no wifi in property, only outside owners house) On my details it says that wifi is available intermittently in the Tree House but is available in the car park closer to the owners property. I have just looked at my property details and have noticed that this information is no longer there due to the recent upgrading by Owners Direct of their whole website. I'm sorry for the inconvenience this caused you and I've now had the opportunity to amend this. And as my guest has kindly pointed out - I am friendly! so please if you have any problems do let me know.

Location

From the Owner

My husband was a painter and we ran a gallery from our home, my husbands studio was what is now The Tree House. What sold the property to us was that we could just walk out of our house with a cup of coffee in hand and walk out into such beauty. My husband painted this valley over and over again.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

A 5 minute walk to a lovely, sheltered cove with pebble beach, safe for swimming. with waterfall, natural swimming pool about 15 feet deep and diving platforms in rocks. One headland is an Iron Age fort and a nearby headland called Elephants Head has a natural blow hole like Wookey Hole - a travel writer wrote.

Clean sandy beaches abound in the vicinity.

Travel:

Even though the buses stop at Nine Wells, it is recommended to have a car. Parking: 1 car only but extra cars can be safely parked in the NT car park at the beginning of our drive.

Distances:

Solva, a coastal village with all amenities is 3 minutes by car and a 20minute walk over the fields or longer along the coast.

St Davids is 5 minutes by car, or a 40 minute walk along the coast.

Facilities

From the Owner

The Tree House is located in a valley that is designated an SSSI (site of special scientific interest) as well as being a SAC (special area of conservation) Porth Y Rhaw cove sheltered and safe to swim in. Site of discovery of largest trilobite and best example of a coastal Iron Age fort. (great for grass sliding) http://www.pemcoastphotos.com/_photo_3099950.html Enjoy swimming and diving and jumping in natural deep rock pool. Discover Elephants Head cove. The entire headland just to the north of and next to Porth y Rhaw is shaped like the head of an elephant complete with a trunk of rocks weaving out into the ocean. The mouth is a natural arch through the headland which if the tide is right and there is a reasonable swell creates a blow hole that spews a fountain of water from its opening. It was compared to Wookey Hole in Somerset by a travel writer in the 50’s. She said people would flock to it in the future…… still a well kept secret. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/the-holy-wells-of-wales-2154864 http://www.dyfedarchaeology.org.uk/projects/holywells.pdf .
