About the property

Farmhouse near Cordes-sur-Ciel, Tarn, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Ideally Located, 5 Minute Drive From Village With All Amenities. 20 Minutes To Large Town Of Gaillac

Charming 5 bedroom farmhouse and barn annex with private pool, set in 2.5 acres of meadow, 5 minutes drive from the medieval village of Cordes-sur-Ciel. The building is divided into two distinct but connected areas ideal for two families: the house has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen. The barn, has a further 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large open plan living room and kitchen. Both house and barn open out on to a shaded terrace, ideal for outdoor eating, which overlooks the large pool, sunbathing area and stunning views.

The gently undulating countryside is a beautiful mixture of vineyards and sunflower fields.

There are many fortified medieval villages which, by car, range from 5 to 30 minutes away: Cordes-sur-Ciel, Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Penne, Bruniquel, Puycelci, Najac which surround the beautiful Gresigne - the largest european oak forest.

Most of the local towns host weekly food markets, famously the St-Antonin-Noble-Val market on Sunday mornings. From spring to autumn every weekend there are local antique/flea-markets (brocantes) in the area. (A booklet with brocante listings is provided.)

Albi boasts the Toulouse Lautrec Museum, Albi Cathedral, recently appointed a UNESCO site and the Bishops Palace.

A generous, bohemian French farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

The glamorous photographs of this property online do not convey its generous idiosyncrasy as a place. They are beautiful but more impersonal than the reality. The house is lovely. It is full of wonderful details: fabulous striped hammocks, pretty scalloped linen in the kitchen, brilliant table tennis table in the barn. Staying there gives one the sense of having LIVED in France for a fortnight - rather than of being a traveller perching in a characterless villa. It was especially perfect for our huge group – ideal if you have teenagers (as we do) that you want to be able to lose SOME of the time (the barn obliges). It is very comfortable, excellently equipped, surrounded by fields. And the place is magically light, especially in the evenings when the sun streams onto the terrace and into the kitchen. The only tiny snag (and it really is tiny) is that there is a minor road not all that far from the house which means that if you have a dog (we do) you need to be vigilant. If you are dog-free, the road is a non issue. You don't notice it at all and the house does not look out onto it. The pool is a really good size and was much enjoyed.

The owner could not have been more helpful - and there is tremendous back up locally if you run into any problems. There is no shortage of places to visit - Albi is a knock-out and Cordes a remarkable little mediaeval town holding its head up high in spite of all the attention it gets from tourists. Our party loved the canoeing and I found the local horse riding terrific through the flowing green and gold landscape (details of these activities to be had in the house). We were all very sad to leave and hope very much that it will be au revoir rather than adieu.
