Renovated Cottage With A Fantastic 360° Panorama

Updated: 05-Aug-2016
Cottage in Mattinata, Foggia, Puglia, Italy - Peaceful Location, Close To Mattinata Town Centre And The Beach

This beautifully renovated early-1900s cottage is located on a quiet hill, from where guests can admire a stunning 360° view of Mattinata and its surrounding (on a clear day it's possible to see town from the other side of the gulf). The house is fully furnished at a high standard and is decorated with exceptional taste. The house has a large garden with a large variety of trees and plants. It's the ideal place for those seeking peace and rest and is handy for those who have pets or those in need of an outdoor space for their kids.

stunning view from large terrace over the bay

  • 5 of 5

Visited middle to end of May (before the main Italian holidays – so relatively quiet everywhere, but already sunny and hot).

A spacious, well-equipped and very clean house, just 3 minutes’ drive out of the town and uphill. A quiet and relatively secluded location (despite being so close to the town and beach), with a stunning view from the large terrace over the wide bay below.

Antonia and Raphaelo, the local owners, were friendly, generous (fresh fruit from their trees, herbs from the garden and invited us for lunch on our last day) and were sensitive to our space and privacy. They own the attached flat next door, but remained in their house in the town during our stay. They spoke limited English, but their son Antonio, who lives in England, was always available by text or phone for any translations. He was also very helpful beforehand, sharing local knowledge and managing the initial booking.

We were lucky enough to be there during a full moon which shone out over the water each night and, the one night we ate out at a beach restaurant, rose up out of the sea, a gorgeous deep orange.

We had a wonderful time here. Mattinata is a fairly small, quiet, friendly town. The beach is stony - but small, easy to lie on, stones at the far south, public end. We parked in an olive tree grove/field marked for parking. When we aksed if we should pay before or after they waved us off and said we could leave the car for free. Just one example of many generous and friendly experiences we had in Gargano.

Lovely walks from the house up into the surrounding hills, (after a short drive) through gentle woods and flowers up to Mont Sacro (orchids) and (after a longer drive) out from Monte San Angelo (a busy and touristy hill town) in the surrounding hills.

From the Owner

I inherited this property from my family. It's been part of our family history for decades and I am very attached to it. The house used to be an old cottage but it's been gone under several phases or renovations in the past few years. I really like to spend my holiday there whenever I can because of the quietness and the amazing panorama and because of its proximity to the town centre.

Further Details:

Without doubt one of the most important natural elements of Gargano peninsula and Mattinata is the sea, undisputed richness that, over time, has created real natural sculptures. From Mattinata towards Vieste, the coasts offer always different glimpses, showing narrow bays that end in small coves and beaches, dominated by high, white cliffs, as in the suggestive Vignanotica Bay. Natural gorges easily accessible by sea, introduce into breathtaking sea caves. There are cliffs and curious rocky monuments, like the Faraglioni of Mattinata in the Zagare Bay, but also coastal towers and necropolises. This itinerary between the rocks and the sea leads up to Vieste and Peschici.

The territory of the Gargano presents unique landscape, flora and fauna elements and unique is also the habitat of the Gargano National Park. In fact, uncontaminated bays and lush pine forests accompany the coast. Some can be reached from the hinterland via winding roads or stairs cut into the rock, but many others are accessible only by sea, announced by their characteristic aroma. Between mountain peaks and deep valleys you reach the heart of the Gargano. There the Umbra Forest presents its mosaic of botanical species, like the monumental beech and oak trees, among which there are ancient trails, a paradise for hiking lovers. Many of them are present in the innermost part of Mattinata. This area dominates the plain surrounded by expanses of centuries-old olive trees, almond trees and citrus trees, lapped by the shore with a long beach of white pebbles and limpid waters.

Heart of spirituality, Monte Sant'Angelo, near Mattinata, is the terminal of the ancient Via Sacra Longobardorum, which, since millennia, leads the pilgrims in search of purification to the Sanctuary of San Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From the Owner

Contemplating the amazing panorama. While the property is in the middle of the country, it's only 5 minutes by car from the town centre and 10 minutes from the beach, so it's very convenient for going out into town in the evening or going swimming during the day.
