Stunning Thatched Barn And Single Kiln Oasthouse - The Oast House Sleeps 6 ( 3 Bedrooms)

Updated: 10-Sep-2016
Barn & Cottage in Smarden, Ashford, Kent, England - Rural Location On The Fringes Of Smarden, Kent;s Lovliest Village

The Thatched Barn sits on a quiet rural lane on the out skirts of Smarden. The Oast sits just a few yards away. Both properties reflect the agricultural roots of the ancient farm to which they are attached, whilst combining modern luxuries such as under floor heating. The Thatched Barn sleeps up to 11 people, in 4 bedrooms (2 en-suite) and a mezzanine. With a fully enclosed garden and plenty of walks nearby, the property is both dog and people friendly. A huge vaulted living space ensures even the largest parties don't feel cramped. The Oast House sleeps up to 6, and includes a fantastic vaulted four poster bedroom in the old kiln of the roundel. The property has two bathrooms. Both properties benefit from an ideal location in the heart of the weald of Kent, Stately homes, gardens, venerable old cities, stunning coast lines and steam railways are all just a short distance away. Take the train to London, or Paris, or Brussels for memorable day out, or explore the ancient timber framed villages that make this part of England so special. When staying at the barn, search for the witches marks used to protect the animals from evil spirits, or look for the ancient counting marks, notched in the oak to count the animals in or out. At over 400 years old, the Thatched Barn is a living piece of Kentish History. The Oast house reflects the glory years of Kent as the nations grower of hops for beer. The roundel oven was used to dry the hops, before they were packed into a 'pocket' and shipped off to the local brewery in Faversham. Once you see your first Oast roundel, you know you have arrived in the garden of England. Together these unique properties allow our guests to explore one of Englands finest counties, from a base entwined in the regions history.

About the Owner

Mr Steve and Mrs Laura Martin look forward to welcoming you to Biddenden Green Farm.

When we arrived in 2004, both The Oast House and the Thatched Barn were derelict. The Thatched Barn in particular was on its last legs and unlikely to last another winter.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy the changes we have made. Both of these buildings are special, and with the help of our guests we hope that we have preserved them for many generations to come.

From the Owner

The Weald of Kent is both stunning and overlooked by the vast majority of the UK. Less than an hour from London, Smarden and the surrounding villages are still on natures time. Rather than whizzing through Kent on the way to the Channel tunnel, stay awhile. There is little that remains this unspoilt in the south east, and it is a pleasure to live here.

From the Owner

The Thatched Barn was built around 1590-1610, and is over 400 years old. The Oast is harder to date, but is likely to be over 250 years old. The Farmhouse to which they belong, was built in 1460, and many of its neighbours consider that to be modern rubbish!!! Touch the ancient beams and walk the lanes, you too can be transported back to England as it once was.
